Yes it does. JellosJigglin's point is still the same regardless if you are talking about just Europe or the world. His comparison is applicable. So is mine. Sorry you don't see that.

You should read my post again. LeBron James might be a proper comparison. But Peyton Manning definitely isn't. The amount of people who are outside the States that know who LeBron James is probably very close to those that know who Lionel Messi is. Peyton Manning on the other hand, I had never heard of the guy before signing on Realgm.

I'm not from the States, I'm from Europe so I'm not making stuff up from my butt.

I'd heard of Lionel Messi, and knew he was a soccer/futbol player (I can probably name four or five,) but until like a month ago, I couldn't have picked him out of a crowd.

He looks like the guy at my YMCA that wears Lugz on the stairclimber.

Americans typically don't follow soccer

Just put into this. More people in the world know who Messi is compared to Kobe.

You are proving exactly the point I was making. American football is by FAR the most popular sport in the states. Number 2 isn't even close. You don't even have to follow the sport to know who Tom Brady or Peyton Manning are, In the USA. Yet you and everyone else Outside of the US would have a hard time pointing them out despite the fact that they're the faces of the NFL. Soccer In the US is as popular as (American) football in every other country. It is the bottom of the barrel. Before seeing this commercial I never knew what Messi looked like. He could've been a black Nigerian for all I knew. I knew he was a big name in the world of soccer but that's it. The same way people outside of America have no clue who Peyton Manning or Tom Brady are. So for someone From the US to ask who Messi is, it isn't really a preposterous question to ask. Very few Americans know who he is.

No one in Europe knows who Manning, Brady or James are.
Most might have heard about Kobe over the last decade if you spell out his name but that is it.
I assume that less than 5 % could name the sport LeBron James is playing if you mention his name.

I know that Americans don't care for football but I assume that the percentage of people knowing that Messi is a soccer player might be slightly higher than the percentage of Europeans being able to name Kobe.
LeBron would lose that comparison in a landslight. So would Brady and Manning...

Doubt it. Kobe's been around a lot longer and has also been on the international stage with the Olympics. And basketball is very popular in large swaths of Europe now. I'd think a really good chunk of Europeans would know his name.

Messi on the other hand is far from a household name in the US. Take it from an American.

Every Mexican and Nigerian American know who Messi is, that's for sure. Majority of people who follow sports know who Messi is. Unless you don't follow sports or are living under a rock, you've heard of Messi (Ronaldo too).

While David Stern may want you to think that basketball is immensely popular in other countries, well let me say that in countries like France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, and Argentina, it's an afterthought. I've been to these countries, and you never hear a mention of it outside of the occasional highlight reel for Gasol, Parker, Ginobili or Nowitzki, who even then aren't exactly heroes outside of the small population that really follows basketball in those countries. They are all about soccer, then formula one, MMA, and other regionally popular sports. Kobe and Lebron really are just not that famous in the rest of world, and Manning? I doubt 1% of the rest of world has ever even heard of the name, much less know what sport he plays. I would say that 5% is a good figure for Kobe, 2-3% maybe for Lebron. As far as Messi, outside of the United States, I'd say he's probably one of the 10 most famous people in the world right now. Really wouldn't shock me.

It is the most popular sport in the world but it is not very popular in America. I played soccer and have a lot of friends who did to but I also have quite a few friends who never played nor watched soccer in their lives and they have no idea who Messi or any other soccer player is besides Pele.

I don't even know who pele is :(

I think the only soccer player I know is the one who headbutted that dude. Ronald or something?

Lol They just don't get it  . I'm trying to explain to the non-Americans here in this thread that Messi isn't a name people are familiar with in the USA. I'm using the analogy of Peyton Manning, not to compare their worldwide popularity, but so they can better understand Messi's (lack of) popularity in America. Peyton Mannings popularity outside of the USA is comparable to Messi's popularity within the USA.

For you Europeans saying "I don't even know who Peyton Manning is, how can you compare him to Messi????". That's exactly my point! Manning is the face of the most popular sport in America, but outside of America no one knows who he is. By the same token, everywhere outside of the US, Messi is a household name. But in America, if you ask 100 random Americans who Lionel Messi is, I'd be surprised if even 5 knew. I don't say this to insult Messi or his fans, I'm just describing the reality of soccers Insignificance in Amerian culture.

The problem is that Messi is pretty famous even in the U.S while Brady is not.
just because you don't know about Messi, doesn't mean that other people don't know either.

The thing for me is, in Australia nobody cares about Soccer or American Football, and I still know who all these guys are. If you don't know the best players from all of the major sports than you're just not a sports fan.
