David Price is the answer

Post#1 » by kingcns187 » Thu Dec 5, 2013 1:28 pm

Jays need to do whatever it takes to bring him to Toronto. A lineup of Price - Dickey - Buerhle - 4 - 5 would be a HUGE upgrade compared to last year. Jays have a bunch of pitchers they can fit in at 4-5 (morrow, hutchison, happ) It's time to make another big splash and this is it.

Discuss, what would you sign him for/give up to get him?

An alternate universe where TB and TOR are not in the same division.

That and don't trade with Friedman.

Price is a very good pitcher, but I promise you this will not happen.

What in the world could we possibly offer that wouldn't make Friedman and co. laugh endlessly - forget the whole trading one of the most dominant pitchers in the game within your division. We don't even have the pieces to get this done.

Do we need pieces or do we need money? I am sure we have the money

Yahoo Sports: Blue Jays are interessted in David Price

Post#7 » by polo007 » Thu Dec 5, 2013 7:37 pm

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/sources--m ... gAwlFNbK5_

The David Price sweepstakes is expected to heat up later this week, multiple executives with interest in the left-handed ace told Yahoo Sports, as the Tampa Bay Rays begin to survey the market for the former Cy Young winner and consider whether to trade him.

The Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams that not only have an interest in Price but believe they can put together the sort of package to pry Price from the Rays, sources said.

The 28-year-old Price immediately would be the most sought-after name on the trade market, and teams expect him to net a far bigger package than the Wil Myers-headlined deal Tampa Bay received from Kansas City last season. Despite the potential for $30 million in salary over the next two seasons before he hits free agency after 2015, Price is a rare commodity – an available ace – that is drawing interest accordingly.

A number of baseball officials believe the Mariners are a strong candidate to acquire Price, especially if they land free-agent second baseman Robinson Cano. The Mariners have considered including 21-year-old right-hander Taijuan Walker as part of a deal for Price, sources told Yahoo Sports, knowing he represents the sort of frontline player the Rays would seek in such a trade. Packaging him along with a young middle infielder (Nick Franklin or Brad Miller) and other prospects would constitute a difficult-to-top offer – and give the Mariners a rotation of Price, Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma, the best 1-2-3 in the major leagues.

Rival officials told Yahoo Sports the Rays aren't necessarily inclined to go strictly for a package of young players, either. Were a team to offer an established major league player with a team-friendly contract as the headliner, the Rays have indicated they would consider that sort of a deal as well.

Executives concede Tampa Bay is dealing from a strong position with Price. The Rays certainly don't need to trade him – they're coming off their fourth playoff appearance in six years and have room in their budget for him this season – but also understand they're likelier to extract more value by dealing him with two full years. Should they compete as expected, trading him in July would be difficult to fathom even for the Rays, one of the most creative teams in the game.

Because they have few apparent weaknesses, Tampa Bay is expected to enter negotiations without targeting a specific position, though officials believe they'll want at least one major league-ready pitcher to join a rotation with Alex Cobb, Matt Moore, Chris Archer and Jeremy Hellickson.

In six seasons, Price is 71-39 with a 3.19 ERA in 973 innings. He has struck out 876, walked 286, led the American League in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 5.59 last season and won the 2012 AL Cy Young.

Sign me up. Even though, as a Toronto Blue Jay I'd expect him to spend time on the DL and have his ERA jump up to 4.5.

Our organizational depth doesn't allow us to top the best offer of some other teams, though. If the Mariners want to build something around Taijuan Walker and DJ Peterson, that's likely to be much more desirable than anything we can put together.

Our depth is no joke, thankfully. But we don't exactly have a Will Myers-esque prospect ready to ship now do we?

Don't see how this is possible. Not only will the Jays have to top everyone but they would probably need to really pay a premium to have Tampa dump him into the division.

Sweet, We can add him to our rotation of Tanaka, Darvish, Dickey, Buehrle, Morrow, with the closer being Chapman.

Jays are always "interested" in someone, but that doesn't mean they are aggressively after them.

We're not getting Cano, Tanaka or Price. Dioner Navarro will most probably be our big off-season acquisition.

^ Agreed it's not likely…but being a long-suffering Toronto sports fan, could we dream a little? Given the proposed Seattle package of Walker, Franklin, prospects, what could we offer?

Would Sanchez, Cecil (or other established bullpen arm), Hutchison (or Drabek), + two lower level prospects (Dean, Tirado) beat Seattle's bid? Not sure that it would, but it'd be a decent haul.

Back to the Fister deal for a moment - after hearing AA talk about how the Tigers just didn't seem to think the Jays could've been a trade partner, I read this article breaking down the Tigers weak bullpen:

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/12/b ... gning.html

Given our surplus of controllable, proven bullpen arms, and at least a few decent prospects in the minors, how could the Tigers not have thought the Jays would be a fit? I bet AA would've been more aggressive with them if they knew they were thinking of trading Fister, but it's still frustrating. Dombrowski has proven to be an excellent GM, but I think a deal with the Jays could've actually improved both teams.

Fister for Cecil, Nolin + lower level guys seems much better than what they got for him.

I think I'd be open to moving EE or Bautista for Price. Of course we'd have to add some prospects but it's worth it if we're getting Price. The Rays need offense and a 1B in particular. I don't see any other way to get him (I assume Sanchez+ is not enough).

No chance of it happening since we are division rivals, unless they know something about Price we don't

The Rays are going to want young players with cheap contracts, though. While both Encarnacion and Bautista are underpaid relative to production, they still don't fit with the Rays' payroll.

That's why a package of Walker + Franklin + other prospects is appealing. Walker is a potential ace with virtually no service time...that's six years of cost controls. Franklin might give them league-average production at a position of need for $500k, and the Mariners have a slew of other solid-to-good prospects to top up the deal.

The only major-league-ready (and cheap) player that we have on offer is Lawrie, and he happens to play the same position as the Rays' best position player.

Then make it a 3 team trade with Edwin or Jose going to a 3rd team for prospects/players the Rays would want. I think there are a lot of teams (in the NL especially) that are desperate for offense and would prefer the power bat of Edwin at a very good salary over Price.

Unless Gord Ash took over the Rays organization overnight, I doubt they trade a star within the division. Couple that with the fact that the Jays no longer have a desirable farm system (at least in the upper minors), and it's beyond a pipe dream. No chance in hell of it happening.
