Re: 2013-14 Free Agency & Offseason Thread
Brian Wilson is back for 10Ms and a player option.
the guy was excellent last year.
but that's still a lot for a bullpen arm.

Are we talking about in comparison to Ellsbury? If so, of course, but I feel like there's a bit of a double standard here, especially if the Sawx give up some good prospects. Granted, those kids could end up being awful and the whole thing becomes a wash.
There is a big difference in Kemp and Ellsbury IMO. Ellsbury minus one season main strength is his speed and I hate to break it to you he's not going to be getting any faster in his 30's. Kemp on the other hand has shown he has home run power. Both guys of course come with injury concerns.
I will say if the Sox are giving up good prospects and paying a good portion of that contract the Dodgers can keep him.

Pshh... You don't know that he'll get slower. He could be like the Benjamin Button of baseball.
Seriously though, this deal looks worse and worse as everyday passes and it's barely December.

Re: 2013-14 Free Agency & Offseason Thread
Bill Madden, Teri Thompson, and Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News wrote:According to two sources briefed on the negotiations, talks between the Mariners — the free agent second baseman’s lone stalking horse — and Cano’s camp — led by rapper-turned super-agent Jay Z and CAA’s Brodie Van Wagenen — collapsed after Jay Z overplayed his hand during Thursday night’s negotiating session.
Cano and his entourage arrived in Seattle with what sources described as basically an eight-year, $200 million deal in hand along with assurances that Seattle would go to nine years and $225 million, a figure confirmed late Thursday night by the Daily News.
But when Jay Z then upped the ante and demanded 10 years and $252 million — the same deal Alex Rodriguez took more than a decade ago when he left the Mariners for the Rangers — Mariners chairman and CEO Howard Lincoln apparently “exploded,” according to one of the sources, ending the meeting.

If true, what a complete amateur move by Jay-Z if he just costed his client 2 years and around $50 million though it could also be a smart move from Howard Lincoln if he wasn't serious of paying that much money in the first place.

Love Jay-Z but he is just terribly unqualified to be an Agent. I can't believe a big time player like Robby Cano actually got suckered into signing with him.
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

240 for 10 years. Cano is a Mariner.
Can't remember the last time Seattle was involved in a giant free agent deal like this. Good for them I hope he plays well.

Yeah haha. I gotta say, NOW the Ellsbury deal I have a problem with. Shoulda paid cano, then overpaid Beltran. Crazy how things can change in days.

Re: 2013-14 Free Agency & Offseason Thread
another think i was focusing on.
this deal puts him slightly ahead of Prince Fielder money...SLIGHTLY.
and 12 million under Pujols money.
i have no idea if that was a factor...what that means...but I for sure was thinking he would at least get Prince money.
another...what could an AL team's plan with him be fore ages 36-41?
1B?
DH?

I'm not in love with Ellsbury, but Cano for 10 years is insane, its worse than Ellsbury.

I'd easily take Cano at that contract over Ellsbury and his contract. While I'm certainly not in love with 10 year deals, I'll take the guy who plays second base and can hit for power.

Re: 2013-14 Free Agency & Offseason Thread
Cano's deal > Ellsbury's deal.
at minimum....when his legs go to hell, he'll probably still be a power bat.
Ellsbury just might not be healthy altogether.

Re: 2013-14 Free Agency & Offseason Thread
I'm indifferent about Robbie leaving. I wanted him to stay because he's by far the best all-around second baseman in the game. At the same time, I'm glad they didn't throw 10 years at him.
At the end of the day, I do know one thing: Seattle ain't gunna win sh*t. Have fun drowning in mediocrity, Robbie.

And if we add another quality bat or two? We already have really good starting pitching and solid defense.
Please, son.

Behind the Felix and Iwakuma, that rotation still has a lot to prove.
Getting Cano to come out west may attract some other guys to the city, but I don't see them winning much any time soon when there's (arguably) three better teams in their own division.

Re: 2013-14 Free Agency & Offseason Thread
Now the (multi) million dollar question for the Yankees is: Do we throw tons of money at more power, or spend it wisely on shoring up the rotation/bullpen?
Knowing the logic of this front office, it'll be more power and veteran rentals in the pitching staff.
