Re: [Game#22] Rockets vs Magic - Game Thread
I didn't get to watch this contest, but I was sure happy to see the W. Can't lose to the Magic after the Jazz and Suns, especially with the Howard connection.
Glad to see Parsons back and of course T JONES was a monster.
I'm hoping more and more for a deal to get Ersan Ilyasova and Ekpe Udoh, while keeping Jones with the Rockets.

ITs not the same without people calling Harden a ballhog or Beverly for being inept offensively.
Never been much for GTs in the first place, but additional trouble with AT&T internet being slow as **** on TOP of AT&T cable not broadcasting Rockets.
TL:DR - never get AT&T, but you knew that already.
I also assumed a few ppl are still with out service throughout north Texas... heard about a big ice storm. Wasn't sure where about people are from. I've notice jwise hasn't posted in while, but I thought he lives in Houston.

i think that's because at&t u-verse suck
i didn't switch over when they have guys knocking on my door
i told them my time warner is working fine for me
unless at&t willing to offer me 6 months free trial i'll wait until u-verse get more users than timer warner
no reason for me to pay the same price for something new
and at the same time paying extra to try for some service i already had
they are willing to cut my monthly fee by $10
but i told them i'm not willing to stop my service at time warner and switch all over to at&t
because what if the service is worse
then i have to pay the installation fee again to go back to time warner
only way for me to consider is offer me free trial and the stupid 30 days wont do it
unless you can show me reliable service for months i wont consider it
then the guy just left

looks like the same people posting... unless you are insinuating its only Lin Fans... freaking out after a loss... only difference is they cant bash Lin when he isnt playing
seems to me its the pre 2012ers who freak out the most when Rox have a loss..
plus it is a game with the Magic....

Probably one of the most boring Rockets games I've seen all year. Game was never in doubt, I had pretty much the entire second half in the background just for entertainment on the side.
Not surprising to see another horrendous offensive performance by Beverley, though.

Peg on.
The only reason they got me is because I was pissed at Comcast's screwjob they'd just put on my bill. Doubled it and unlike normally, wouldn't offer a lower rate package. The best I could get was $105 for internet and basic cable.
Piss off, Comcast.
That said, AT&T blows chunks. Yeah, they have huge bandwidth and speed or whatever, but OMG LATENCY.
If this is light speed fiber optics, I want my dialup back.

It's not. Their service is much better than AT&T, they just [finally] tried to ream me on pricing.

here in austin it is very easy to get time warmer or at&t to fight for the price
because both are available in most location
if you are willing to spend the time to bargain with them
you can get a discount by keep talking to different customer service about changing your provider
i'm just don't want to spend the time to do that
my colleague like to do that to save money
he's now stuck with u-verse
just not sure how long he will keep using their service
i just hope google fiber can get here faster
because last few year time warner is really being an a***
first they charge you monthly for the cable modem (i bought my own now)
then they keep raising the price
i went from paying $60 a month to now close to $70 a month
i can't use the basic service
i have too many device using the internet and i need the extra speed for streaming hd content and online gaming
i'm not crazy enough to go for the $100 a month service (just broadband)
i stop having cable tv for long time
seriously don't have much time to watch it anyway

They're lying their asses off when they tell you that you HAVE to rent a modem from them.
Buy one anywhere for like $25, done.
I used my old cable modem for years, even though Comcast swore up and down that it wouldn't work on their lines.

not sure about comcast but for time warner you really have to use one of those from their list
when you call them to activate your cable modem they will tell you it wont work if they don't see it as one of those of their list
well i actually did it online
i enter the serial# from one of those old cable modem laying around my office that no one is using
it didn't work (it's a really old one, it used to work for time warner, my office used time warner too)
so when i put in the one i bought from amazon and it work like charm (actually more stable than the one time warner rent me)

That. Is. Some. bull.
So now they're tracking MAC addresses for rental modems and only allow those? And they won't sell those even, but will only rent them? "Monopoly," anyone?
I refuse to pay $240 over 2 years for something that I can effortlessly find on ebay for less than $10, with shipping.

if you buy one of those on their list then you are fine
i pick the one that can support the speed i'm paying for
i think it was around $70-80 (basic cable service one is cheaper, i think less than $40)
because the longer i wait the more i'm paying time warner for the rental
so i don't want to wait for it to go on sale so i just buy it
it was posted online it went on sale as cheap as $50 after rebate (i hate rebate)

There is actually okay reasons for that.
1) Backward compat from docsis 3 to 2 is nightmarish. But if you want to be over 100 mbits per second over copper, it's essential to do. A white list helps to ensure only working equipment to go on the network and gives potential clients who botched a self install another reason to tie up a phone tech for 30+minutes.
2) When you provision a cable modem to a client, you are matching up the client's home address (using that as a unique id, which is really the digital cable port activation outside his house), and the mac address on the modem. That way, if people steal someone else's cable modem, they wouldn't get internet access for free. This actually happened pre docsis modems in the mid 90s. So the MAC address is essential information anyway.
3) Now you have a pool of modems that you rent out, most people don't really notice 10 bucks a month on the bill, and they don't need to deal with tech support of the thing with another company. When you buy a modem for a cable modem network, you have to give them the mac address anyway, for reason (2). The provider has a whitelist for equipment for reason 1 (and of course, you wanna ban the modems that a client can modify easily to get higher bands of bandwidth than they actually pay for).
Now, I'm not happy with a lot of the charges. The 'self install' option requires a service charge of which the workload literally takes someone at a terminal 10 minutes to do. It shouldn't cost 35 bucks, in any market. I can understand a truck roll for a professional installer costing 100 some odd bucks, as insurance of the employee and the equipment take up the bulk of that money, then you pay the tech about 10-15 bucks an hour, his or her training cost that the employer has to recoup.
But yeah, a good DOCSIS 3 modem new is about 100 bucks, so if you don't sign a multi year contract, I think it's a good gamble, since if the one breaks returning it to the manufacturer to get a repair is going to take a lot longer than going to the cable desk and asking for a new one.

Wasn't aware of this docsis thing you mention.

Nope, totally get that as a requirement of service. What stuck out to me was using MAC addresses to limit it to their own personal supply.

I don't personally care much about (2). 10 bucks a month adds up, though. 4 years and you're out $500.

I'm not arguing against those costs, though I do typically try to get them waived.

I see where you are going. Nah, there is no reason why you can't bring your own device to the party. If the rep on the phone is giving you **** about it, ask them for a white list. If they refuse, make it a supervisor call.
