Thoughts on Drummond's shot at rebounding title?

Post#1 » by Dre Drummond » Mon Dec 9, 2013 4:02 pm

Right now Drummond is in third at 13.0 per game. But he has played fewer MPG than the top two players on the list.

1. Kevin Love 13.6
2. Dwight Howard 13.2
3. Andre Drummond 13.0

I know Andre probably doesn't care about it but it would be nice to see the first Piston since Ben Wallace lead the league in rebounding.

I think he has a great shot cause we have bad shooting.

He could lead the L in FG% also.

MPG is the key.

To get more MPG, Drummond has to shoot FTs better.

Drummond has a pretty solid shot. Howard and Love are both injury prone, so that leaves the door open for him to snatch it. Plus, he's been a rebounding machine the last handful of games.

It's about a quarter of the way into the season and he's in the running. You have to think there's some shot as votes and notoriety have nothing to do with a rebounding title. Kid seems to be improving all the time.

foul trouble has been the main culprit in lowering his MPG.

I think he's got a decent shot at leading in rebounds per 48, but probably won't catch them in raw numbers baring injury. Howard is current posting the lowest minutes since his rookie year, so you have to figure he'll start creeping up as the season goes on. That's double true if they finally move Asik. Love's minutes are down too compared to his pre-injury season. That may not rise since he's got more frontcourt help now.

Dre could certainly improve though if he can stay on the court. I wouldn't be on that though. Between the hack-a-dre, his own foul trouble, and Mouse being able to play the 5, he probably not going to dramatically increase his minutes.

He's fouling at an average of a foul per 10 minutes -- that's ok for an inside big, especially one not getting superstar calls yet.
Dwight's fouling at a slightly higher rate than Drummond thus far, but he gets more minutes because he sucks less badly at the line.

Drummond has a shot. I thought Vucevic was going to win it last year as he was averaging over 13 per game for a while also, but a long season of which Dwight turned it on in the 2nd half of the season left him with 2nd place.

Would love to see Drummond unseat Dwight!

That is not what I was getting at. There have been a few games were he had to be taken out due to foul trouble and got less minutes those games than he normally would. That lowered his minutes per game average as a result.

here ya go...

WAS: 5 fouls / 26 minutes
OKC: 4 fouls / 23 minutes
MIL: 5 fouls / 25 minutes
LAL: 4 fouls / 16 minutes
MIA: 6 fouls / 23 minutes

That is almost 25% of the games we have played that his minutes were low due to fouls. That mos def is hurting his minutes per game average more than the few minutes he lost due to benching for FT issues. IMO

I don't think he's FT shooting has gotten him taken out of any games this year. So I don't know where that's coming from. The only example would be the Philly game, but that only took him out for like a couple minutes and then he came back and finished the game.

The only times his minutes have been limited has been because of foul trouble.

His FT shooting is improving too. He's 23-48 last 5 games. Nothing special to shoot 48% FTs, but its an 11% increase over his career avg, which is a pretty big improvement, and he's regularly making 1-2 at the stripe now.

he is first in offensive rebounding
http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/playe ... fied/false
and
he is 9th in defensive rebounding
http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/playe ... fied/false

if he improves his defense, there will be more defensive rebounding opportunities.
Sorry for my poor english

I LOL'd at this. Since he's been playing less effectively, I think I'll start calling him Mouse when I'm pissed at him.

I like Mousse, too. Stop playing like a foofy dessert, Monroe!

Ft's have nothing to do with it, his mpg has been hindered a bit because of foul trouble.

Big men since the beginning of time have been awful ft shooters, just the way it is.

If he keeps up his current pace he will absolutely lead the league in rebounds, and by a wide margin, unless someone else starts it into overdrive.

If he starts to slow down, then it will be a battle.

If he keeps up his current pace, he could be averaging 15+by the end of the year easily, and that could be higher.(16.8 over his last 5)

*edit*

I want to add, that if he leads the league in rebounds, he will also be averaging almost double the points Ben did when he first led the league in rebounding if memory serves. That is awesome.

I want Drummond to be more aggressive in boxing out, and while his offensive rebounding is great, he needs to learn a TON about proper defensive rebounding. He's getting most of them on sheer athletic ability, when he doesn't need to, being the biggest human in the league.

Play smart, not so hard you injure yourself young man!

Drummond not getting Eastern Conference player of the week last week is a complete disgrace.

The point is Josh needs to stop. We need to move him to the four and big Monroe off the bench.
