I don't think it's crazy at all. We have depth at the 2 and I'd rather hold onto 2018 in case the bottom drops on this team after this season. Shumpert hasn't progressed, is nearing the end of his rookie deal, is coming off an ACL injury, and I actually fear he will suffer another serious injury again in the near future.

if the bottom drops out and melo leaves in 2015 we will re-stock in FA anyways. We aren't tanking for 3 years straight to make the 2018 worth a damn from 2015-2016-2017

That said, with the two guard depth we currently have on the roster, I would rather trade Shumpert knowing that he will require an extension after next season, had an acl injury, and is currently a malcontent than an asset down the road that will appreciate as time goes on and provides us much more flexibility in the future.

A first round pick is worthless if it is 5 years away. And hell, it wont be "LeBron James" so why is anyone worried? Draft picks are overrated anyway. I'd rather have mediocre PG's as short-term stop-gaps to try and save a lost season with a terrible coach so our best player doesn't leave this offseason.
