I guess they alternate him and Morrison?

And what do they do with Smoak? He wasn't terrible later in the season so maybe they move him for an OF.

Smoak is garbage. He had a good stretch in the latter half of the season, but really fell off again at the end. I'm pretty sure just about every Mariners fan is tired of his act.

LOL Choo declined 140 million for 7 years from the Yankees. If true, I don't see how he gets a better deal but I guess we'll know in a month or two. It would be fun to see Boras pull off some magic and land him a better deal.

So, Youk signed a deal with a Japanese team today even though the Yanks wanted to bring him back.

no state tax in texas.

130 Ms in Texas > 140 Ms in NY.
i expect the Rangers to be back and competing this year with this move.

I feel like with every signing of a relatively big name Brian Cashman is slowly slipping into insanity.

dont care much for the years we gave choo but we desperately needed another bat and now we've added 2 obp monsters this off season at positions where we got 0 production at last year in left field and 1st base. no complaints here

I really like Choo as a player, but I think the Rangers are really going to regret that deal in those last 3 years or so. With that said it probably makes them the best offensive lineup in the AL

anybody know why teams in the MLB don't front load the contracts?

like Choo
year 1: 30 Ms
2: 25 Ms
3: 25 Ms

u get a slight overpay for the 1st 3 years.
but u get 4/ 50 mil on the back end...but it's manageable when he starts to regress.

They might hate that contract much sooner than that too.

Talk about over paying a player, geez.

the thing is, we're going for it now big time while darvish is still cheap, plus we have a gigantic tv contract that starts to take place in a couple years that will allow contracts like this to not hamper us. not to mention, if some of these trades the last couple years have proved, it's not impossible to deal any contract in this league

we desperately needed choo. it's an overpay but im fine with it

Not a bad idea but most do not front load because of 1. inflation and 2. the AAV of a deal is used for luxury tax purposes.

The Rangers aren't the Yankees so the luxury tax thing probably won't apply to them but they could be paying more if they front load it because of inflation. If I am wrong or if there are other reasons, then please correct me.

Glad Choo is out of the NL, dude would always terrorize the Nats even though it was only ~7 games a year.

Rangers going all out...not sure if you can buy a ring.

The way the rangers negotiated it is he'll make less at the start of the deal and more at the end, whereas fielder is making more now and less at the end so essentially rheyll be getting a combined 38 million from us every year once Detroit starts paying part of fielders contract in a few years

True but the Tigers probably wanted to save as much money as possible today because they don't know what will happen in the future. So in my mind, if the Rangers wanted the Tigers to pay part of Fielder's contract starting from 2014, they would have received less money in the deal not the 30 million they ended up receiving.
