They get a back-up PG in Felton, they get a defensive stopper in Shump (who can knock down open three's when confident), and they get a big in Bargs who can play well next to Howard on offense.
We get rebounding/defensive help and upgrade our PG position (our biggest areas of need).

Why would trade 2 of the best players for garbage?
If there is a trade that make senses,
It is Melo + Felton for Asik, Lin, Parson + picks
This way, it is a improvement for both teams.
Rockets: Beverley, Harden, Melo, TJones and Howard
Knicks: Lin, Shumpert, Parson, Bargnani and Asik.
Knicks can package Chandler, Amare + picks for some expiring contract.

Of course. Blake Griffin would come to NY. The Clips would not want to have to be locked into Griffins contract if they are going to carry Paul and Anthony's long term.

IF a melo trade occurred, it would be when he is at the tail end of his career much like Paul Pierce, not while he's still in his prime and a top 10 player in the league.

If I wasn't mistaken, the new CBA doesn't allowed sign and trades for team over the cap (or is it luxury tax?).

Melo could walk by the end of the season. What can knicks offer to make this roaster better? Absolutely nothing. Melo is the only chip management has. If Melo walks by the end of the season, the Knicks will do a repeat of the 2000s, basically become a lottery team.
At least, if they trade Melo, there is a possibility of moving Stoudemire
If they can trade Melo for Asik, Lin and Parson, this automatic put Knicks in the top 4 teams in the East. This will makes Knicks exciting to watch because you have a team that play team basketball again.
