But Porter has literally had ZERO chance to prove himself. Plus, his value around the league is probably down.

Hmmmm......
Brook Lopez is done for the season. Nets are in for a world of hurt.
Is there any way that we could take advantage of this situation to somehow snag Brooklyn's first rounder in the upcoming draft?
Billy King is all in with hit aging line up of Joe, KG, and Pierce. Nobody's going to help him with those contracts. So blowing up the team isn't gonna help him. (Oh, Deron's contract isn't an easy one either). So, like it or not, King's all in with what he has. Can't help it.
So the counter-intuitive strategy would be for him to actually try to ADD a piece or two to salvage this season with his core. But he has little to offer except for his draft pick.
Would he go for Gortat (to replace Lopez) and Temple for Jason Terry, Reggie Evans + Brooklyn's unprotected first?
Gortat is a very workable replacement for Lopez and can be a good glue guy. We roll with (gag) Seraphin in place of Gortat all for a chance at what could be a lottery pick. The NBA gods smile on us and we get a top 3 pick in the draft.

Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XXV
Ariza is a good player.
In the absence of truly viable alternatives in free agency, Ariza should be retained for the right price. One of those viable alternatives could be a sign and trade. I doubt there is a compelling reason to trade Ariza pre-deadline.
Re-signing Ariza has nothing to do with Porter or Webster. If Porter develops to the point where Ariza isn't needed, we could trade him -- as early as next December 15. This is the exact same thing Denver did with Nene.
Ariza under contract for 2.5-3.5 more seasons (as opposed to an impending FA as he is now) could likely fetch a first round pick and/or a decent player next year, as long as he continues to play well and stays healthy.
Broadly speaking, I would:
1) Keep Porter and develop him
2) re-sign Ariza
3) use the MLE to upgrade our bench (like Portland did)
4) trade Ariza once Porter starts to be a reliable contributor.

Tonights game (along with our record) is exactly the sort of reason why you let Ariza walk--we're not close to good enough to start thinking we can lock this team up for a long run. If we extend Ariza and Gortat this is basically our core for the next three years--and we can't even seem to hit .500 in a historically bad east.
I'd love to trade Ariza for bench depth--give Porter significantly more playing time to develop and if we suck and miss the playoffs then GREAT--can anyone honestly argue that us keeping our pick this year and losing both Ernie and Witt couldn't be the best possible thing for this franchise right now?

I like Webster a lot, but trading him also is an option. If the MLE is used on a combo gaurd it might make sense to keep Ariza as 3/4 depth rather than Webster as more of 3/2.

The Nets do not have a pick that is free and clear until 2019. The ones they have are subject to pick swaps.
Not that EG would ever do it, but I think Lopez himself would be a good trade target. Something like Gortat/Ariza would help them a lot this season and give them the ability to keep a couple players who should have some production ahead of them. I would even entertain sending Webster instead of Ariza.
One team that should have interest in Lopez would be the Bucks. What better way to help a tank than giving up assets for a productive player that will miss the season. If they are having some remorse about Sanders, he could be traded with Ersan for Lopez. The Nets probably want someone more productive than Ersan, so the Wizards could make it more attractive to Brooklyn with swapping Ariza for Ersan.

And bring back Okafor for cheap.
While keeping our eyes open for some better plan. Not a bad fall back plan.
Upgrade at coach and get a new GM and things should look pretty good. I think upgrading at coach is the next biggest move they can make. Randy is average at best. We need a stud coach now.

I agree with steps 1-3, fish.
I would trade Booker, Seraphin, Singleton and/or Vesely for whatever players/picks I could. I'd look for any ripoff Nene trade that would return Washington a first or an expiring contract.
I would really try and amass enough to trade for Demarcus Cousins, if possible.
I'd also look to be in position to acquire Greg Monroe.
Denver might be looking to trade Faried and/or Quincy Miller or Justin Hamilton. I'd be all over that for the right Wizards.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XXV
At this point, keeping Ariza is imperitive because he's an absolute ace fit with Wall. The Ariza-Webster-Beal trio is a perfect fit as a wing rotation.
Ariza is valued around the league, especially by contenders, as an ace wing defender who hits 3s. He'll be a potential movable piece, even if we do resign him.

Seems perfect, but it really isn't. And the main reason is that neither Trevor A, Webster or Beal can carve up a defense with the ball in their hands. Only way that pairing is ideal is if Beal get a lot better with the ball in his hands. If not, one of Webster or Trevor A has to go. But maybe not if Otto has good handles. Then Webster can move to back up SG. But even then, you really would want Beal to have good handles.
You would be looking at
Wall
Beal/Webster
Trevor A/ Otto
#3 is a lot for a back up SF, but keep in mind how light that draft was at the top. Depending on how things go, you would eventually move one of Otto or Trevor A and you should be able to get something decent in return.
So if thats the way it goes, they would really be focusing on what to do at PF. For me, I have no problem with Nene 25 mins a game coming off the bench for another year. He anchors the team so well, even 25 mins of Nene does a lot. That leave 3 positions open. Starting PF, starting center and back up center.

I'm a wolves fan who sees Wizards as a good partner for Kevin Love trade.
So what do you think about Love and Martin for Beal, Porter, Gortat, Vesely?

Yeah I'm not interested in going from Nene's foot issues to Brook Lopez's.

Maybe. Personally, I don't want Kevin Martin's salary in the deal and I think there is probably a way to make the deal without him. Leave K Mart and Vesely out, you probably don't even want Vesely anyway.
How likely is Kevin Love to opt out of his contract and/or leave in free agency?
If you think he's as good as gone, then it doesn't really make a lot of sense for us to trade for him.

You're probably right. But I don't think your best case scenario is realistic. We're not going to miss the playoffs without Wall going down. And we're not going to trade Ariza. Dealing Ariza won't get us back a better player in the immediate future, and Wittman and Grunfeld are fighting for their jobs. We're in an intolerable spot right now. The only thing for the team to really do is try and gel together and win as many games as they can.
And I think you might be discounting the importance of Wall and Beal making the playoffs this year. It'll be really good for their long term development as basketball players to starting winning ASAP and get a taste of what it takes to make the postseason and succeed. This was something of a make or break year for Wall in particular.
I'm looking for us to get back into this draft after the lottery to snap up a useful player that falls once we lose our own pick. There will be guys with terrific upside available throughout the first round, and teams willing to deal their picks to save money or make a short term move.

I don't know, I think Ariza might be more valuable as a 7.8 million expiring. Unless you're talking to a team that really thinks they can't extend him.
I doubt Porter will really develop without playing time, keeping Ariza is likely to stunt his growth. So I'm not crazy about the idea of extending Ariza for this reason alone.
And I'm still kind of hoping we find a way to break out reliance on Nene and possibly move him or bring in a Greg Monroe or something. Extending Ariza gums up our cap even more.
But I'm starting to agree with Nivek in that we probably will bring Ariza back. Grunfeld and Wittman are going to win enough this season to get extensions and they're going to keep this core together for a few years and the first step will be extending Gortat and Ariza this summer. I don't see the FO shaking the tree midseason with a deadline Ariza trade. Too much short term risk for them when they're fighting for their jobs.
And honestly, the Wizards aren't so flush with good players that they can afford to let Ariza just expire. They need to deal him. So if nothing comes up before the trade deadline, then extending him is only option to get something out of him.
If Gortat and Ariza are extended:
- Might have to let Booker walk. I think he might be the most expensive of Ernie's kids to retain.
- If Booker walks, I'd keep Vesely. I think he'll be dirt cheap and he'll still have upside.
- Gotta find a way to get rid of Maynor.
- Look for a trade to get back into the first round of this draft class.
- Use the MLE to try and get Ramon Sessions in FA. I think he'd be a nice third guard.
But most importantly, keep the cap open for Kevin Love's FA summer in either 2015 or 2016.

I added Martin so you guys get a SG replacement for Beal, his salary is reasonable. And to keep Love you better have a loaded team that is guaranteed to make playoffs. This trade makes you better right away, I think you would be 3rd best I the East.
