Kawhi Leonard's game against the Warriors

Post#1 » by SpursFan98 » Fri Dec 20, 2013 2:02 pm

In last nights game against the Warriors the Spurs took out a close win via a tip in from Tiago Splitter, but in the undermanned spurs squad it seemed the Kawhi Leonard stood up to lead the group to a great win.
Leonard finished with 21pts shooting 67% from the field.
It seems that Kawhi had an encouraging performance, but how would you rate him overall?

Well the question is if he can keep it up or at least put these type of stats up more often
If he can he will defiantly get respect from around the league

Hopefully he will be able to but even since the 2011-2012 season his 3pt shooting has dropped from .376 to .374 and to it's lowest .308.
Although last night against the warriors he was 1-1 from the perimeter I'm his usual spot in the corner of the court.

But, his points, rebounds, steals and assists have all been rising steadily since his debut in the 2011-2012 season

To be absolutely honest I don't know much about the spurs or Leonard so I can't really comment but as a bobcats fan I can say I do respect him and am willing to learn more about him and the spurs
As a whole though as he takes more shots you can't expect him to maintain his 3pt%

Well at least he's been gaining respect throughout the league, Personally I think that he could become a 4th HOF player that the spurs currently have and Pop loves him and his play style do hopefully the future is bright.

Happy to see him take command of the game and play well but he needs to do it more often and he needs to do it when the big 3 are playing.

That is true that his performance hasn't been at this standard in games that Duncan and Parker have been on the floor, but, at least we know that we have some great players like Kwahi to provide us with a good future as a team

Well even if he doesn't consistently score then he always has defense on his side. You look at him and he is defending well against the most valuable position to have a defender

With hands that big it's hard to have a bad defensive game!

I thought it was more Marco than Kawhi actually. Both played well though. Hopefully that tip in will get Splitter going. Patty Mills played great at times but made some dumb turnovers. We lose without him last night also.

Scoring wise Marco might have played better, but, if you look at Kawhi's overall stats you'll see that Kawhi grabbed 10 rebounds (9 of which being defensive which limited the warriors opportunity for second chance point, also, Kawhi had a double double and 1 steal and 3 assists, so in my opinion Kawhi had a better all round game, as apposed to Marco having a better scoring game.

I'd argue center is the most valuable defensive position, but yes Kawhi's defense is important but we're going to need him to do more than just defend if we want to make another run.

You have got quite a valid point and I agree completely centers rim protection stops multiple positions driving the lane. But other contending teams eg. Heat, OKC have small forwards that do most of their work. Do I believe having a defensive small forward can be just as important to a good center? Yes, because going deep into the playoffs the spurs have to be able to lock down guys like Durant, James or PG

A PF or C can be the most important defender- whoever is protecting the rim. Ex: Duncan is more important than Tiago as a defender for this team.

Kawhi has been pretty nice on defense this year, and is averaging a healthy 12/7. I wouldn't mind if he became a reliable 15 PPG scorer but I don't know if jumps like that are possible in Pop's system, especially with Manu and Marco having good scoring years. All he needs is his outside shot back.

In the past yes Duncan has been our most important defender but this years its been Splitter. When he's healthy and on the floor our defense is elite and his individual defensive rating are extremely impressive.

As for Kawhi i'd really like to see him make that jump to around 15 PPG like you said. Yes he isn't shooting the three that well but he's too passive at times for my liking.
