This is the case for some pro athletes, I think. And Bynum seems to be someone who fits that bill. I don't think he's ever really loved the game, but he happens to be 7' 1" and 285 lbs or whatever and very few other people have those qualities or the athleticism to match up with his size.

For fans, the game is like a special thing that many of us wish we could have done at the level the pros do it at. But for some of the pros, I think, it's just a job. And a job some of them might really not like that much.

Do you think mostly big guys (or a big percentage) have this feeling about the game, just there to collect a check? Since most of them are simply in the NBA because of their size and a certain amount of skill.

I think it's more an individual thing than a "positional" thing.

Some big guys love the game and will do anything they can to hang on. Kareem, Moses, and Hakeem come to mind. On the other hand, I'm sure there are "little guys" who had less love for the game than those centers. For example, Chris Paul (I think) has said recently he may retire early to spend more time with his family. That doesn't mean Paul doesn't love the game, but he may not have the unbelievable devotion to it that someone like Kobe might have. It just varies, IMO.

A person can have a great talent or ability and come to find that talent/ability a burden or unwanted anchor at some point. Still, if you can make a bunch of money doing a thing, then there's probably a lot of people who will pursue such a route, even if the "love" isn't there.

I just realized I whiffed on what you were asking me.

Yes, it's probably the case that more big men fit this mold because they "happen to be big" as is the case with Bynum. In that sense, they may have had to put in less work (and/or have "less love for" the game) than smaller players to be able to make, and stay in, the NBA and collect a good salary. Because they are so physically large and that is far more rare than a 6' 3" player is.

Good point. Sorry I totally didn't grasp your question at first.

I definitely don't see why some people are still bashing the Bynum signing...
The contract at least has some value going forward. Some games he looks like the old LAL Bynum, which he was a monster. His size alone in the paint defensively is worth the $6 million..

Stick a fork in his career. I give him 3-5 years and he pissed away his money...

Maybe he is just mentally handicapped and thats why he always parked on the handicapped parking...

Is this guy bi-polar or something? He looked great a week ago. He was killing Noah with outside jumpers and playing solid basketball.

He's just immature. I doubt it's a passion of the game thing.

Portland should make a run at him. Would fit great next to aldridge and will give them that paint presence they will need in the playoffs.

Maybe this is a deliberate ploy to play on a better team this year- probably Miami

If Bynum was healthy and motivated he'd easily be the best C in the league IMO. He's neither.

Lol let him go bankrupt and have to get a real job, see if he prefers making millions shooting a ball or working wherever his highschool degree + his lack of smarts will get him for 30-40k a year.

Lack of smarts? I heard and read once that he is a pretty smart dude who is into computers ... building them and stuff. I think the problem is that he doesn't really like Basketball unless he is somewhere where he has the chance to win something.

Lack of heart doesn't mean he is stupid

About Bynum suspension, league source tells Yahoo: "He doesn't want to play basketball anymore. He never liked it that much in first place."
