Fry opting out?

This would have sounded crazy before the season but am I the only one who thinks Fry will opt out after this year? I honestly think some team would be willing to throw 4 yrs 20ish mil at him. That seems like a lot but it's the going rate for a backup big especially one who can stretch the d and give you some minutes at both the 4 and 5. Yes that's a slight pay cut next yr for him but the possibility to have the stability a 4 yr deal provides might be a good motivation to opt out.

Houston Rockets would love him as a backup PF or even starter. So maybe you can be right.

I thought, just no way because of his condition. But you may be right. Not sure I want to lose him, not sure I want the extra cap room this Summer. To tantalizing to the front office to use on a crop of FAs that aren't really going to help much.

I hope he opts out. He's basically a Matt Bonner type player. When his 3pt shot isn't falling, he's completely useless despite being 6'11 and 250 lbs.

His average of 5 rebounds a game is pretty humiliating.

I'm fine with him resigning here but only for like $3-$4M/yr and as a bench player. I want a PF that can get more than 5 boards a game and be able to knock down jumpers (to stretch the floor for Bledsoe & Dragic) and score inside if needed. If not free agency, hopefully we can find someone like that in the draft with one of our many picks.

It's smart to opt out. While the average to ignorant fan might bag on him, most gms realize that the Suns teams have been better while he is on the court.

Hopefully he is doing it to eventually help the team that gave him a new lease on basketball life.

I think something like 3/15 will get it done. He's extremely limited but fills a needed role.

Frye means more to the Suns than he does to anyone else. Just like Dudley and a few other guys we've had over the years.

Hopefully we---and he---realizes that.

^Agreed. I hope he stays with the Suns, and we could work out a long term deal, roughly 16mil for 3 years?

There is absolutely no point to renegotiate his deal unless we need his cap space to add some FA. If not, let him opt in or out... I do think he will be cooperative and his home town ties will make it easy to decide. I'd say a 3 / 4 / 5 deal would be more than adequate to keep him if re-doing his deal...

Frye is also older. He's a veteran who has been in Phoenix for a while now. He has daughters, and he has more or less settled here. That doesn't mean he will definitely stay, but I think in general older players with families are less willing to chase after money and move from city to city all the time than younger guys are.

Frye spends most of his time in Portland though, I don't know if his kids go to school there or not but I know he definitely prefers it to Phoenix. He does have family ties here though and seems to have good chemistry with Plumlee so I don't see why he wouldn't stay. I also don't think anyone is going to give Frye more than the $7m he is slated to make when he's 30 and had a prior heart condition.

Frye likes it here, has been a Sun for years now and has had an experience that might make him appreciate things other than just money.

He is scheduled to make $6.8M next season. He is playing very well right now (I believe that he is underrated if ocnsidered just a 3pt shooter, but that's another story) and is certainly worth a new contract. This could change next season if he plays worse or somebody takes his spot, which is not impossible given our huge flexibility with picks and cap space.

What I mean is that the smart thing to do for Frye might be cashing in this season in form of a new 4 year contract. He'd leave almost 7M on the table, but if he got a new contract starting at $4.5 - 4.75M, four years, he should really be set for good. Now if his agent gets him a 8M per from somebody, he is a goner.

Depending on what happens the rest of the season this scenario could stop making sense, but if things remain as currently, I think it would be just a matter of getting to a common ground on what happens the last year evolution of the contract (plain or increasing, %s, options, etc).

The biggest plus is that such scenario would make way easier to keep PJ, who in my opinion will be getting something from 3.5 to 4.25M per.

I guess i hope he opts out because it will mean he played well these last 50 games. Then I hope he's not back because that would mean the suns used the cap space on a big ticket free agent or trade.

I like fry and all but I guess I would prefer keif as the long term backup 4 and a better player than fry as the starter. Now if the morri were used to acquire a starting 4 I'd be totally fine with fry as the primary backup.

If he did it could be a blessing if it made us push hard for Love.
I wouldn't consider it a longshot if the FO wanted to keep the same type of system in play with a stretch 4 but even a better scorer and rebounder.

Not saying Minn would though but I bet the FO would try to pursue if such a scenario happened

No way PJ pulls that in. Maybe 3 mil per year max, but probably 2.5 mil a year.

$2.5M? That's basically bantha fodder money in the NBA. Tucker is the starter SF for what is a playoff team so far. Limited, true, but is a defensive specialist who can do a couple more of things. Maybe he won't get to the 4M mark, but I'd be really surprised if got less than $3-3.5M per from the Suns. Now, if he is let go, who knows. But if the L is paying attention he will get a decent NBA contract.
