O.T. No power nightmare.

Post#1 » by zeebneeb » Sun Dec 29, 2013 10:09 pm

So, did anyone else here lose power after Ice storm 2013 swept thru town? It was a complete nightmare for me, including having to bail out over 300 gallons of water from my basement, using TWO 2.5 gallon buckets.

Coldest damn days in my life in the frozen tomb my house would become, power came back on Christmas morning, and just now have fully recovered from that fiasco. Worst part was that my parents power went as well, so it was a double whammy, and I never fully realized just how dependent my life had become with power, internet e.t.c., that it was eye opening to say the least. Getting a generator asap.

I think it affected me a hell of a lot more than the great power outage of a few years back(The entire eastern seaboard was out if memory serves)mainly because it was during the winter, my life was a lot less complicated then it is now, and the holidays right at that moment. Shopping for gifts, in a store with no power, and having to use cash was also just bizzare.

Anyone else have a story, or hard time during this ice storm?

You bastard.

I say that jokingly. Mostly.

*I spent one night thinking I was in Jamaica.* Does it count?

I'd say it counts, if you just drank a lot of rum at home it'd be very similar to being there

damn man thats rough. Good to hear you survived.

My heat went out a few winters ago and had to go a few days without heat and it was miserable. I also lost air conditioning one summer when it was 100 degrees. Honestly don't know which is worse, but at least in the winter I could layer up clothes to get warmer. Wiith no air conditioning I was just tortured with no escape. lol

I'm back in Michigan for the holidays. We lost power for a couple hours in the middle of the night before the ice storm. I only noticed because I was jetlagged and wide awake at 3am. Nothing post-storm, though. Outside was beautiful, though. I haven't seen it like that for a good 20 years.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

I think it's important to have a wood burner & generator... why a burner?... when the power goes out so does several gas stations.

I live in South Lansing. I lost power at my place for a couple days.
My mom lives "in town" Lansing, and she is STILL without power, 8 days later! The Board of Water and Light is taking a LOT of flak for their mismanagement of the situation. Horrible response times, late to call in additional support from out of state, bad communication through all mediums (customer service, social media, local media).

I live in the Toronto area and I was without power for about 40 hours... it was brutal. I lost power around 10 PM on the 21st and got it back mid-afternoon on the 23rd.

driving around the streets in my neighbourhood was like driving through a war zone, there were trees fallen everywhere and literally hanging down over the road so you could barely get by.

I will say that I was relatively lucky though, I had a full shelf of food (and beer!) and I have one of the warmest duvets you can own. I also brought the barbeque into my garage and made some nice salmon fillets and steaks.

I live in a very old neighborhood of Orlando with massive old trees all over. Every time there is a very windy rainstorm, it seems that a power line gets knocked down and I am without power for 2-6 hours. Usually, I head up to the pub when that happens. Also, power was out a few hours during hurricane Charlie.
