Lakers inquired about Brook Lopez (Before foot injury)

Post#1 » by moonpie » Mon Dec 30, 2013 7:25 am

Pau Gasol for Brook Lopez?

It would seem, on the surface, that merely posing such a question is a moot point given that Lopez is out for the season after re-breaking his troublesome right foot.

Beneath the surface, though, there are at least two reasons to address it here:

1. Sources with knowledge of the discussions told ESPN.com that the Lakers did indeed engage the Nets earlier this month in some exploratory talks to see if Brooklyn had interest in such a swap. Sources say that the Nets balked at the idea when it was presented before Lopez's injury, but it's still noteworthy if it happened.

2. The Lakers were known to be, at the very least, calling around to gauge Gasol's value before they decided to pull Pau off the market earlier this month. So determining how serious the Lakers really were with their Lopez interest is tricky ... especially since Lopez's health misfortune extinguishes any realistic hope of Pau-for-Brook talks re-igniting between now and the Feb. 20 trade deadline. Yet the mere concept of Gasol and Lopez exchanging jerseys nonetheless gets you thinking, because Lopez is owed $32.5 million over the next two seasons after this one.

I'd still do that trade, top 5 center when healthy!

That would be taking a huge risk acquiring Lopez. I would stay away.

It will be crazy trade

Brook before injury was one of the best 5 in the NBA despite Nets struggling, n Pau is Pau that we know. Pau for Kwame deal all over again

Noooooo thank you! Lopez gets hurt way too often and he stands to make a ton of money over the next two years. Aren't we tired yet of having overpaid centers on our roster that can't stay healthy?

We need to let Pau play out his contract and depending on exactly why his game has declined so much I'd try to re-sign him to a much more reasonable contract. At the same time I'd see if reducing his playing time doesn't have a positive impact on his game. If Pau's not willing to take a reduced role let him walk.
Sometimes being wrong is awesome!!! :D

If I'm Mitch I revisit these talks now that Lopez is done for the season & offer to waive his physical.. We should be able to get a solid throw in or 2 along with Brook. Looking towards next season & beyond, this trade would put us in a much better position. Instead of having to renounce the rights to Hill/Wes/Farmar/Young/X to create the cap space to chase free agents this summer, we can hold onto all of their bird rights & give us a much better shot at retaining them all.

Even if Lopez doesn't work out here, he still has trade value moving foward.. Keeping Bynum healthy & featuring him for a season got us Dwight, if K-Love lets the T'Wolves know he's leaving after next season, they'd have all the incentive in the world to take a Lopez for Love swap. Same with Hill/Wes/X/Farmar/Young, being able to lock them in to longer deals gives us a handful of good trade assets to land the star we want if Lopez doesn't end up being that guy.

I know some would take it as giving up on this season but let's be honest, we aren't contending this season no matter what happens. If we're going to even make the playoffs, it's going to be for the same reason we did last season, & that's Kobe taking the team on his back & carrying us there, & I believe he can do that with or without Pau. Kaman/Hill/Wes/Williams/Sacre/Kelly can hold down the frontcourt for the remainder of the season & we can focus on developing our young guys so that they're ready to be role players on a contender when Kobe & Lopez get to come back with a full training camp under their belts.

Do it anyway. He's gonna be ready for our title push next year with him, Kobe and Deng.
