Question, can the team re-sign Ariza and Booker, renounce everyone else, and sign Greg Monroe?

No, at least not it that order.

It may be possible to get Monroe and keep Ariza if Monroe is acquired via S&T, and then Ariza is signed via the MLE.

It also could be possible to sign Booker and Monroe if the cap goes higher than expected and/or Monroe costs less than the max.

Yeah, I asked Nivek, so he'll double check, but I'm trying to see if it's doable. I'm working under the assumption that the cap will be $62 mil next season.

I think at this point, the best case scenario is the Wizards make the playoffs and win enough games where their pick will probably be in the high teens and not re-sign Gortat.

How does a pick in the high teens help us when it's going to the Suns?

Washington has to get a center from somewhere, might as well resign Gortat, not like Washington will have better options available.

Drummond, Hibbert, Noah, Horford, Bosh, Varejao, BLopez, Chandler, Hawes, Vucevic, AJefferson, Sullinger

Has he outperformed any of the 12 guys on the above list?

The only two starting Cs in the East that Gortat has clearly outperformed:

Valanciunas, Whoever Milwaukee puts at C (Sanders, Pachulia, Udoh)

So out of 15 teams in the East, we've arguably got the 13th best C. (not including guys like Monroe or Nene who play at PF).

Are we that much worse off if we find a C via some alternative method (trade or MLE) ?

To be fair, there's probably a 50/50 chance that you can get one of the best centers in the league in Jordan Hill if he can stay healthy and come close to his per 36 numbers.

I probably take that chance because there's a very good chance we'll regret the Gortat signing unless its very short term.

Yeah, Jordan Hill even as a part time player, seems like a better bet going forward than Gortat.

Meanwhile, Phoenix got a #1 pick from us and didn't miss a step by trading Gortat and replacing him with a Pacer castoff in Miles Plumlee. If Phoenix can dump Gortat and not lose a beat, why can't we do the same?

One free agent to be that I was pleasantly surprised to watch last night was Greg Oden. He's still not in basketball shape, but I was impressed with his intensity and aggression. He tried to 2 hand dunk pretty much every time he got the ball and actually made a couple. And he played 10 minutes without injuring himself! He didn't have his old hops - he barely got off the ground, but he did show quick leaping ability - which surprised me - he didn't jump high but there was some explosiveness. And as enormous as he is, he doesn't have to jump high - see Hibbert. He's making the veteran minimum this season. I can see Miami slowly slowly building up his minutes this season to 15-18 minutes a game, so he's ready to help them in the playoffs. If he's successful and gets a clean bill of health, I think I'd go ahead and offer him the entire MLE and guarantee 2 seasons if he'll agree to a team option for a 3rd - assuming the Wiz have the MLE this offseason. I know we already have health issues with our starting bigs, but he's worth playing the risk/reward game at age 26.

If Lebron leaves Miami, what about Chris Bosh? I know he's a little on the older side but he still has mileage left and would finally give us that stretch big. I don't know if his mindset leads him to beleive he's a big name FA and will only go to a destination city, but I think an opportunity to be a top option on a younger playoff team might have some appeal? He'd be a perfect fit.

We won't have the money to bid what other teams will bid even if we don't re-sign Gortiza (trademark). At best, we could have just enough for a junior max contract (25% of the cap) player like Monroe.

Probably - or close to it. He's still one of the top handful of bigs in the game - and with championship ring$$s.

Without knowing what we do with Gortat or if we try to acquire Monroe, I think Patrick Paterson is a good MLE type target as a stretch four. I doubt he'd get more than that and he fits a clear need.....his shooting has really improved up north.

Any team counting on Oden to be anything more than a part time player is going to find itself in a lot of trouble.

Great story seeing him back, but it's only a matter of time before his knees put him out of commission.

This team has painted itself in a corner with the Porter draft and Gortat trade.

Our 2014 free agents will be Gortat, and perhaps Ariza, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Grunfeld let him go in order to prove to the world that he didn't bust on yet another lottery selection.
