Would you trade Josh Smith for an expiring contract?
And take a redo in FA this summer?
Would Brooklyn (who doesn't have their own pick this year so no reason to tank) trade Pierce for him?
Would Indiana trade Danny Granger for him? He does guard Lebron fairly well.
Would Charlotte trade Ben Gordon for him? They are trying hard to make a playoff push.

Re: Would you trade Josh Smith for an expiring contract?
I'd do it in less than a heartbeat even if I was completely convinced we stood no chance of making a major move in free agency (I'm pretty close to certain).
I don't think we could find any takers, though, and theres no reason to believe Dumars would swallow his pride or even admit a mistake in what will be his last offseason if it isn't a success.

Dumars wouldn't because it means we finish with a worse record and a greater chance of him being let go after this season. Also it would just be a bad PR move in general.
Imagine the outcry if we did trade him for BG though. We traded away BG with our 1st rounder for Maggette's expiring in order to sign Josh Smith and then we trade him for BG. Essentially means we gave a late lottery/mid-first to Charlotte in a loaded draft for nothing.

Part of me wants to say we would get a higher pick, therefore retain the pick... but we might just be better.

In a heartbeat, this was such a stupid signing to begin with. If Dumars is not fired after this season I will be so pissed. Were stuck paying a guy 14mil a year to avg 15ppg while shooting 25% from downtown. This may have been Dumars finest work yet. Only way he gets traded is by replacing Dumars so someone can come in and clean up his mess. I would honestly trade him for Gay. At least he can play the position and only has 1 more year left of his contract after this season.

I just can't see us retaining the pick with so many teams tanking and the East being so terrible. As the other thread in this forum says, we would have to be like the 2nd worst team in the NBA from here on out to ensure we retain our pick, and even though our roster obviously has issues they aren't the 2nd worst roster in the league.

Re: Would you trade Josh Smith for an expiring contract?
Would I do it? Without hesitation. The team would immediately improve on offense, a la the Rudy Gay effect.
The Nets would be the only team crazy enough to take him on, though. Considering they could care less about salaries. Even then, they would probably be hesitant.
And, like mentioned above, Dumars isn't going to swallow his pride and admit a mistake until it's apparent to everyone on Earth, and it's bludgeoning people over the head.

Re: Would you trade Josh Smith for an expiring contract?
I just stumbled upon the rest of that stat chart that someone posted in another thread the other day.
All extremely small sample sizes. Essentially about 3 mpg of Monroe/Drummond and 5 mpg of Smith/Drummond. (But unfortunately thats all there is because Cheeks refuses to experiment w/ them) Anyways it leans heavily in favor of the Smith/Dre duo's potential. Certainly not big enough a sample to definitively say trade either of them, but at the very least it probably suggests Cheeks should be playing them together more w/o Monroe (if they are that good together w/o him).
Honestly though, the most noteworthy stat on there is the fact that Cheeks has only experimented with each duo for 3 and 5 minutes per game a piece. I know they haven't played much together but didn't think it was that little time. For all the talk here about which to trade, it doesnt appear like the Pistons are having the same discussions, or else you would think they would be committing more time to each duo to give themselves bigger samples to evaluate.

Re: Would you trade Josh Smith for an expiring contract?
Based on that chart, we are best defensively with Dre/Smith by a wide margin, and also best offensively. Best net rating and +/- as well.
I'm not going to take anything from the small sample, but it definitely piques my interest to see more of them together w/o Moose.

not a chance. we arent getting anyone anywhere near the quality of player josh is in free agency. we are still barely 30 games into the season. new coach, new team. we have to ride it out. either it works, or we go down in flames and start again. obviously we can add extra pieces, but this has to be the core.

Look at this... another story on how great Toronto is doing after their GM traded Rudy Gay... the guy who took the most shots on the team but made the lowest percentage. It changed the whole season and everyone's career including the Coach.

You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.

^Yeah, ever since Toronto traded away Gay, they've been balling it up lately. Rudy has also been doing well as not being the first option in Sac. It was a win win for both sides tbh.
I also liked this part:
I also liked this part:
Which is similar to what we're doing with Smith right now, especially the 4th.Casey was criticized for allowing Gay to dominate the ball, but there wasn’t much he could do. In the NBA, salary dictates playing time.

Smith's contract is kinda ridiculous. Amare has a 20+ mil expiring next season which could be a sweet asset.
You guys are saving major money with this deal.

Re: Would you trade Josh Smith for an expiring contract?
When have teams been able to unload a $20 million expiring contract. That has happened how many times? There is probably a 1 out of 20 chance that could happen. No chance in hell Joe D. acquires Amare to strap this team to a losing record for 2 more years. Dude is done and just a waste of any Owners money and cap space.

Yes I agree with you.
My only thing about the whole salary = playing time thing:
this should not be true, especially when you have quality players on rookie contracts. Kyrie Irving gets a chance to play up to his performance ability and earn his next salary.
If Joe wanted to have 3 All star quality big men on one roster, they also should have a strategy or two on how to get all of them minutes without jacking up the team as they do now with Smith taking the most shot attempts, and mostly jumpshots at that.
Either get Josh Smith to change how he plays, or force him to play how you want him to play by putting him at the 4 and only calling plays for him on the posts while he is in the game.

Re: Would you trade Josh Smith for an expiring contract?
I'd trade Smith for an expiring ASAP.
I never wanted either smith or jennings, but before the season i was more annoyed with the jennings trade. Now it's a completed turn around. Jennings has his flaws, but he's a welcome addition in my eyes. On the other hand, Smith has been horrible so far.

Re: Would you trade Josh Smith for an expiring contract?
It's hard not to see this as being a pure addition by subtraction for the Pistons if this occurred. But I don't think any GM in their right mind would trade an expiring for Smoove. They would be crucified for it.
We are stuck with him for at least another year or two until his contract can be dealt away as an expiring. Either that or some contending team has to have a horriffic injury to their SF/PF right before the trade deadline and become desperate.
The best thing that could happen right now is for Smith to come off the bench at the 4 behind Monroe and for Cheeks to decide to force-feed Drummond in the post. Monroe would get his fair share of mid-range jumpers to work on his game there.
Granted, the above likely won't happen unless we lose a few more games and fall out of playoff contention but I actually believe that's best for our team in the long run. I just don't see the current course of things leading us to being a championship-contending team the way we are. (Sorry vic).
The worst thing that could happen is if some people on this board had their way and Monroe was traded. You don't give away a franchise building block just to make another older player fit on your roster. You can call him slow, etc but the reality is that Monroe fits a LOT better on this team as our future 4 (age, skillwise, and mentality) than Smith.
