Kareem Greatest Big Man?

Post#1 » by NBAWestFan » Fri Jan 3, 2014 4:20 pm

Kareem was one of the top 5 big man ever.
Even at a Older age he still could put up close to 20 points.

He was clutch and a go to big man.
Played Great Defense Blocked Shots, Rebounded.
And probably one important factor is he played four years
at UCLA for John Wooden.

Big men do not develop because they only have One year or two
in college and their coaches were not likley playing his Center.

With that said if he has not already done so.

I wish he would write a book or two on how to play the low post
Offensively and Defensively.

Bynum benefited from Kareem. If Kareem were younger Howard would have
been mentored and stayed. Hakeem mirrored his game on Kareem and he
became one of the greatest big men.

I really have alot of respect for Kareem and Wooden because it was the big
men who help bring championships that seems to be fading away.

I respect Pau for his offensive game but he seems to be fading too fast.

I would love to see the Lakers draft the best big in 2014 and develop him.
he has skills.

In my opinion I have Kareem as the greatest big man ever. Hakeem was a beast and probably had some of the best footwork for a big man. But I think Kareem was better. 1) Kareem 2) Wilt 3)Russel 4) O'Neal 5) Hakeem

With the way people talk about Embiid you would think he's the greatest big man.

Seriously though Ill probably go with Shaq, the dude was just so dominant. He had the mobility of an average size man but was 7'2" and 350lbs. Obviously you can't go wrong with any great big man as your number one but I'll say Shaq #1 Kareem #2 Russel #3 Wilt #4 and Duncan 5.

lakers kareem was lazy on defense. a guy like hakeem wasn't only a good 1-on-1 defender or help-defender, he was one of the greatest defensive anchors in the history of the game.
you can't open a thread about kevin love today without 100 posts about his weak/mediocre defense. but kareem was uber great although he didn't care about defense?
i have hakeem as the best center in the game, because he was simply amazing on both ends.
what exactly do we know about wilt's defense? most people who have watched him play are already dead.

Calling Hakeem the greatest center is like calling Kobe the greatest guard of all-time. I don't think Hakeem is better than Tim Duncan let alone anyone higher.

which list? stunnar's list? sorry, but that is not my list.
hakeem is definitely and without any doubt, the top 10 player in history with the weakest supporting casts.
i always find it funny when people try to defend lebron "every superstar needs help". well, hakeem won 2 consecutive titles with scrubs. duncan did it in 2003. but he only did it because dirk got injured and because the nets .... well, sucked.
i take hakeem over duncan on O and on D any day of the week.
let alone the rest... shaq was mediocre on D, kareem lazy, we don't know anything about wilt's D, russell sucked on O.

Two or three more things:
- Kareem was a true leader and a winner.
- Kareem was a nice passer with nice court vision
- Kareem had HUGE charisma. An aura of greatness, the most devastating, unstoppable shot bball ever witnessed.

Kareem is probably the second greatest PLAYER of all time. Him being the GOAT center is a lock.

Funny that you discount Duncan in 2003 and fail to mention that Hakeem only won because the greatest of all time got bored with basketball for a couple of seasons.

Plus, Drexler with outstanding role players (Smith, Horry, Cassell, Elie) doesn't exactly suck. Phenomenally great player at his peak, but he wasn't dragging a bunch of dead bodies around.

Wilt had better tools, Kareem had more desire and worked harder with the exceptional tools he had...

Kareem
Wilt
Shaq
Russell

Hakeem is his prime was great and probably a harder worker but by the time Hakeem became a great offense player was at a much older age than Kareem. Kareem came into College as a great offensive player and he lasted until he was in his early 40's. I like the lengthy Career Kareem and Duncan had skills from college and both have skills well into their late stages of their careers. Shaq was dominate but did not have as good of basketball skills compared to Kareem, Duncan, Hakeem. These three could make free throws and played till they were nearly forty. Wilt was dominate like Shaq but ended his Career early to play Volleyball and Shaq ended his career early because he was not in the condition that Kareem, Duncan and Hakeem were in. Shaq at 35 was no where the player Kareem was at 38 or what Duncan is now. Russell was a Defensive player but did not have the offense like the others. He was on really stack-up teams.

Its a tough question, and I admit I haven't watched the past 50 years of basketball to make an educated decision.

From what I do know, I wouldn't discount Russel, or Shaq, Wilt, The Dream etc. He certainly played at a high level for an unnatural amount of time.

There's no way Duncan is even to be mentioned in the same breath as the cap & Russell was too small. Aside from the best big ever Kareem may be the best player ever.

I'd argue that if he doesn't get HIV I think Magic could be considered the same.

Absolutely. I get I heated debates with Bulls fans all the time because I tell them Magic is the best all around player to ever play the game. Jordan was just the best scorer I ever saw.

Recently what made me put Kareem up there in the mix was the fact as a scorer what would seperate him from any other great scorer & it was the fact that he had an unstoppable shot & it was money from about 18-19 feet in.
