Is cheeks a good coach?
I know that this guy has a bunch of talented yet misfit pieces to work with but i feel he doesnt bring amything to the table. Im not impressed with the sets are offenses run usually and it looks like he has no impact on the fourth quarter sets we run. Our defense isnt being fixed, he's just leaving it broke. The rotations dont make sense half the time.
Is there any reason to keep him after this year. Id like us to stop firing coaches every year but I cant see anything impressive and cannot see him as a coach who could lead us anywhere. Blowing 4th quarter leads has a lot more to do with coaching than people will say.
What do you guys think should be done?

he's below average but he's not the reason we're this bad. we got a terribly constructed roster and a bunch of soft choker type guys who dont know how to execute when the game is one the line. also we are the lowest IQ basketball team in the league
i dont even think pop could win 35 games with this roster

What about this would make you need to ask if he's a good coach?
He hasn't had a winning season in 11 years. That's all that needs to be said.

Joe Dumars is 0 for 4 for his last 4 coaching hires.
But clearly firing another coach is the solution! Because everyone is just crawling over each other to get the Pistons gig at this point!

Re: Is cheeks a good coach?
he's Dumars' final hire is all I can say. Cant keep going thru coaches when its the same GM that's hiring them. This was a fireable hire and I think the time has come for Dumars to step down or get fired

Re: Is cheeks a good coach?
Hell no,this guy has no clue what to do half the time,I really think if we got a good coach to come here and let cheeks walk now we could turn this around with roster changes and make some noise in the playoffs.Thing is we would have to give a guaranted 5 yr contract with money to match,if thats the case we really need to pick a guy that wont just get us to the playoffs but can take the team all the way down the line because were stuck with him otherwise.

Re: Is cheeks a good coach?
I'm going to say no.
He simply doesn't have control over the team, he doesn't adjust well during games and his system is a mystery.
He doesn't have a perfectly matching roster, but his rotations are just mind boggling.
I think every poster on this forum has figured out rotations that would allow Dre/Moose/Smith to get their minutes and play alongside guys that compliment them, but it looks like Cheeks can't manage to do it.
and it would be different if he was getting results, but he clearly isn't.
The way he treats Smith is especially strange to me. It appears smith has a much longer leash than anyone else on the team, but he's the one guy who shouldn't.
Monroe and KCP have had games where they've started strong and then been completely ignored in the second half. In that case i'd imagine a good coach would be able to acknowledge that and make sure they are the guys who should be the focal points on offense, rather than the 2 guys chucking up long 2s and heavily contested 3s.
i could go on...
I was all for giving cheeks the benefit of the doubt to start the season, but i'm at my limit with him now.

How many genuinely good rosters has he had to work with in that time?
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

Its hard to tell, he was given a stinker of a roster. I'm not inclined to blame Cheeks for our struggles, when your GM goes out to sign two low IQ chuckers- you are going to struggle. Cheeks could nut up and make sure Jennings/SMith take less shots though.

His laid back style obviously isn't a good fit for a young team who has Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings.

In both cases of Portland and Philly- they were generally consider title contending teams. Portland had just come off a western conference finals against the Lakers, and Philly had recently been in the NBA finals, led by Allen Iverson.
In both those cases, the teams continued to decline over his tenure. I don't believe that's a coincidence. What the trend does tell is that Cheeks is good at convincing people that he can coach a playoff caliber team.
At this point, I believe Cheeks best skill as a coach is tricking GM's into believing he can coach.

His first year in Philly he had Iverson, Webber, Iguodala, Dalembert, Korver, Salmons, Matt Barnes, and Lou Williams.....and they won 38 games. He had two superstars in Iverson (avg 33 ppg!!!) and Webber (who avg 20/10/3) and some quality role players around them. Some of those guys were pretty young still, but that's enough talent to win more than 38 games in what was a pretty weak East at the time.
He got good individual production out of guys, but as a team they never jelled and met their potential. They avg 99 ppg and gave up 101. Its almost a carbon copy of the same problems going on here. People can say this roster doesn't fit, but its hard to look at that Sixers roster and blame it on fit.
His next season there, they added Andre Miller in his prime, and won 3 fewer games lol, finishing 35-47. So when thinking about trades and such, I'm really not sure a roster change is going to make any difference here, unfortunately.
This guy has had tons of talent over his coaching career (Rasheed, Pippen, Iverson, Webber, Z-Bo, Iguodala, Andre Miller, D. Stoudemire, Bonzi, Sabonis, Drummod, Monroe, Smith, Jennings, etc) -- more than a lot of guys ever have, and he's only been able to produce 2 winning seasons & never get any of them out of the first round of the playoffs. Classic underachiever.
Good coach's get more out of less. He routinely takes talented rosters and underachieves.
I'm sure Joe knew what he was getting here too. I don't think he's stupid. I think he just couldn't get anyone else to come work for him, so he called up one of his ol playing buddies to do him a favor. Which is why Gores should've fired him at the beginning of the offseason, once it was clear that he was a liability to the coaching search. Gores is more to blame here than Dumars in my opinion

Re: Is cheeks a good coach?
From when Cheeks was fired from Philly. Does this not sound exactly like what is going on here right now?
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3766766
Gores should take a cue from Stefanski.
As reported by ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, citing sources close to the situation, Cheeks was informed of his dismissal Saturday morning after the Sixers suffered their eighth loss in 10 games Friday night at Cleveland and dropped to 9-14. The move caught the Sixers by surprise.
"They want to win and win now," Brand told The Associated Press.
Team president and GM Ed Stefanski said he met with Cheeks, describing the former 76ers star as a "gentleman throughout" and a "class act." "I felt we were not progressing the way we had wanted to progress," Stefanski said. "I didn't feel on the floor we were executing the philosophy we wanted to have as Sixers basketball."
NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com the Sixers were determined to give Cheeks every chance to halt Philadelphia's slide after picking up his option for this season in February, extending his contract again in September and spending big money in the offseason to sign Brand away from the Los Angeles Clippers and re-sign Andre Iguodala. But the Sixers appeared to be sliding further and further away from the high expectations generated by Brand's arrival, falling into their current 3-8 funk after a brief uptick in November that nudged their record to 7-6. Sources said that the firing happened now because removing Cheeks -- whose contract is guaranteed through next season -- was the easiest way for management to shake things up. "I knew something would happen because of the high expectations, but I didn't think it would happen that fast," Brand told The Associated Press.

We've been blaming coaches since Larry Brown, it's time to start placing the blame on the players and Joe Dumars
