Nene would be a great 3rd big. Hes an expireing next yr so you can move him for another piece. It just means that we are not FA buyers in 2014 but with Joes track record thats not a bad thing.

That's sort of the tricky thing about Smith. If we trade him, we either need to get some value back, or need to get expirings so we can have a "do-over" in free agency this summer. Agree Nene would be a great 3rd big, but then Ariza would become a longer term solution for us at SF. Although I have to admit this works better than our current configuration.

ESPN NBA rumors has an interesting speculation.. Afflalo and Big Baby for Josh Smith... again pure speculation but I'd do that trade in a second.. doesn't solve our sf issue but solves our Josh Smith issue

I think Afflalo can play 20+ minutes at SF no problem.

I think we all need to be a little realistic here in general, and for reasons different than the ones I mentioned before.

There are NO trades for Smith or Jennings, and it isn't even necessarily because nobody will trade for them (though that's also probably true).

Joe Dumars has no incentive whatsoever to deal them away. If he deals either of them he admits failure for the offseason and will out the door before the team experiences any benefits from being rid of them. There is no win for him there, at all, even if there is one down the road for the team.

He'll ride this out in the foolhardy hope that it eventually pans out, because that hypothetical possibility is the only thing that could possibly save his job.

Must be a piston fan at ESPN with that Orlando rumor.

Smith can be traded for spare parts, even Rudy Gay and Andrea Bargnani got traded for value.

I would cry tears of joy if that happened. We would then just have to dump Fat Baby Davis in a separate deal. Sadly its probably nothing more than just speculation.

I agree. RealGMers seem to be a bit extremist when it comes to trades. The fact is there are lots of dumb GMs around the league and I think someone would be willing to take Smith off our hands.

No, it isn't redundant. We have multiple trade threads and a lot of things get lost. So yes, if you want to focus on a particular idea or thought, it makes sense to open your own thread.

As for my "bad opinion", is it bad that I think we'd be better off with expirings than Smith? That's my opinion. Sorry that you think he's such an asset to the team.

Getting out of a single year of Ben Gordon's contract cost us a first rounder.

There's no controversy here. Of course we'd be better off with expirings than Smith. For that reason we won't get expirings for him.

To be fair, that's completely on Dumars. Dumars had the option to amnesty Ben Gordon or trade him. He opted to trade him and dumped a pick for the sake of doing it.

I see a lot of bad contracts moved. I think Smith CAN be moved but I think Dumars isn't the right guy to do it. Because he wouldn't be willing to take bad a contract that maybe the only gain is shaving a year off the deal. He either obsesses over cap space or will not accept going this route because its a "downgrade" in talent.

This works in the trade machine.

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=opv39k4

Moose, Stuck, CV for Ariza and Nene and some sort of draft pick.

I'd be happy if we had Ariza, but since he's going to be a free agent this offseason it makes little sense to trade for him. It makes even less sense to take on Nene's giant contract when he'd just come off the bench.

Ideally I would like to move Jennings, Smith and Monroe for youth and financially flexibility moving forward.

Nah man, they'd just keep Smith at the 3 and move Ariza to the 2.

And watch losses mount.

Mostly just want to see how Drummond and KCP progress and then add fitting pieces around them, currently I don't think any of those 3 are or will become guys that we eventually win with. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying to dump them for nothing, by all means get as much value as possible, just make it for the future and not right now.

If you think about it, the Afflalo trade isn't that farfetched. Getting rid of Afflalo and Davis actually open up playing time for Oladipo at the 2. In addition, they have better cap flexibility next year instead of waiting for 2016. Smith is also a great fix next to Vuc.

For us, Duh. Afflalo is a no brainer. He can even play the 3 and we might actually be a good defensive team....

But its not happening.

I would easily keep Jennings & Monroe. Jennings has shown improvement & he may not be a long term piece but we could do a lot worse in the next year or two.

I think Monroe can be a dynamic side kick to Drummond. That front line could be downright insane in 3 or 4 years with shooters spread all around them.

I agree that Smith would be a good fit next to Vucevic but I wasn't going to be the one to bring it up and get bombarded by the Smith haters lol.

Posted it on the Magic board to see they're reaction. My money is, they probably will look at the mess in Motown and tell me to go away.
