Phil Jackson endorsed the Cheeks hire...

Post#1 » by DCintheD » Wed Jan 8, 2014 6:39 pm

do u guys think he did that knowing Cheeks would be a bust so Dumars would get fired and he'd take over? I mean almost all of us knew this hire would be a bust. Lionel Hollins was a much better target and he was even offered an assistant job after the Cheeks hire. doesn't make sense that Cheeks was hired when Hollins would have been a no brainer

It would be a brilliant move on Jackson's part. It would be the most bone-headed decision making on behalf of Gores and Dumars in that event. Considering the history- I suppose that's a possibility.

Odds are- Jackson's "help" was a useless publicity stunt for Jackson and Gores' ego and Phil had nothing to do with Cheeks' hiring.

I think that's a stretch at best.

I doubt Jackson had all that much input when it came down to it.

He was brought in to help us find a coach, but had little input on who we picked? How does that make sense?

Actually I don't think Phil played a huge role in the Cheeks hiring. Phil was here for like a week providing advice to Joe and then moved on, the Cheeks hiring didn't come about til several weeks after. I remember reading an article where the reporter asked Joe how much influence Phil had on Cheeks being signed and Joe said something very vague which implied that it was his decision, not Phil's.

That whole situation was hilarious. It says a lot about a GM when the owner has to bring someone else in to help him with hiring a coach. Seriously just fire Dumars already!!!

Don't forget the part where Dumars still made a terrible hiring, a Kuester-level of failure.

From today's Kevin Pelton chat:

Bob (Seattle)
CourtVision just named Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings as two of the worst volume shooters in the NBA. There's no hope for Detroit, right? And will this be the last year of Joe Dumars?

Kevin Pelton
Their offense is 21st in the league, and you can win with that, at least in the East. For example, they're right behind Washington in offensive rating. To me, not being able to put together a league-average defense with Andre Drummond and Josh Smith involved is more galling, and points to coaching as a major issue.

any chance Dumars can make right on the Cheeks hire midseason and fire him for Lionel Hollins? or is that asking too much? I still dont understand this hire over Hollins... Cheeks seriously looks out of place as a head coach... looks like a crack head off the street wearing a donated suit

Never thought i'd see a functional crackhead, but Mo Cheeks looks like a functional crackhead when he coaches.

No way we fire another coach already. Dumars has gone through so many already and this would just look terrible. Dumars just continuously finds ways to **** up this orginization with every move he makes, its literally pathetic that he is such a joke of a GM.

It didn't. Gores doesnt know anything about basketball, first he hires and advsior who selects Frank then he hires his friend Phil Jackson to help choose Cheeks. He obviously has little trust in Joe D's ability's. But TBH, I'm not enthusiastic about who Gores would pick to replace Dumars.

Wow very true. If dumars is fired I wouldn't trust gores to find a suitable replacement. Hopefully billups, but does gores give a hoot about piston loyalty? Who knows.

At this point though who could possibly be worse than Dumars? I honest to god know for a fact anyone on this site could build a better team than Joe and I'm not even exaggerating.
