Re: 2013-14 MVP Discussion Thread Pt II
Massive game again from KD tonight, and the Thunder get the win on the back of two Heat losses.
Every time it looks like his lead is slipping away Durant seems to just wrest it back slightly. It's fun watching two all time greats in their primes though, that's for sure. Some of their respective lines just seem like playground ball.

Yeah, the touch calls are keeping KD in it. He is about to go 0-6 in the next six so that should put him out of contention.

Bone throw to Toronto and Canada market, I think, to tip the cap to what Toronto is doing this year and particularly since the Gay trade.
lecola wrote:Paul George is nowhere near to a mvp level, even Indiana gets 65 wins. He is good but overrated.
He's slipped considerably in recent games, IMO. As Bill Simmons recently said on Twitter, the difference between guys like LeBron/Durant and George or even CP3 is that LBJ/KD rarely take nights off or have a truly bad night.
lecola wrote:Lebron is playing about %70-80 of himself but still beasting. KD plays his all but he is a beast as well. These two are way over the league. Fun watching them.
Clearly the two best players in the league

Finally OKC/MIA won a game. What are they, like 1-4 in their last 5?
Durant is probably very close to 30.0 PER now, after the Bucks game (he was like 29.7 before it). I looked up and found that the latest a person has ever had their first career 30.0 PER season was in their 7th year. That was Shaq. Maybe this is Durant's year to do that (in his own 7th career season). His monster numbers give you an idea of just how difficult it is to have a 30.0 PER season.
Good night for Durant tonight. I'm sure LeBron and the Heat were happy to leave New York. I read a piece on ESPN last night saying that Miami is having trouble finding motivation right now, and that would not surprise me:
http://es.pn/1ey0Vgt
Miami is playing just average basketball, despite the team's overall strong record, and the Heat are having moderate motivation issues.
This is why teams seeking a 3-peat or 4th straight Finals rarely win 60+ games. It's hard to care when you're worn down. That's the price you pay for success.
Good night for Durant.

Holy,I know this is the MVP thread, but that Greek freak kid looks insane. He's looked like a better athlete than Durant tonight, maybe slightly even more freakish.

No, if anything, this just proves it's really kinda dumb to try and put the MVP discussion in a vacuum and be so quick to change opinions based on what's happened over a 1-2 or even 2-4 week stretch. It's It's a 6 month, 82 game long season, so even when Durant and/or LeBron have a rough couple of weeks or even a rough month, it shouldn't really signal someone to entertain the thoughts of other, more obscure players, when it's quite clear KD and LeBron are on a completely different level than every other player in the league and the totality of their season (once it's over) will prove it.
Well, except CP3, I really do think a healthy CP3 is closer to being on KD and LeBron's level than anyone else in the league and a log closer than I think a lot of other people either want to admit or are aware of.
Said in a thread about which point guards would make OKC better if they replaced Westbrook:

This race has certainly slowed down. I suppose part of it is due to both guys losing a few games lately. I expect it to heat up when they meet for their first head to head later this month. The national media usually starts focusing on it more and more in February too. This could be the first time in a while the race goes down to the wire.

OKC facing a tough test in their next 3 games: @Mem, @Hou, vs. Golden State. Houston and Golden State are back to backs. I'll be impressed if they go 2-1.
Edit: next 3 after are Kings, Blazers (Blazers on the second night of b2b), and then @SA (OKC on the 2nd night of b2b).
Wow, that's a tough schedule.

Durant's last 9 games (without Westbrook)
34.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists - just insane raw numbers. But OKC's 5-4 record in that span diminishes it a bit

Meh, Miami are 4-4 without Wade and they have a far stronger and more experienced cast outside of LeBron/Wade than OKC have outside of KD/Westbrook.
If OKC are still top three in the West by the time Russ comes back then I think that only helps his MVP case.

Dunno why record keeps getting brought up in your guys discussions, as it stands right now OKC isn't a top 3 team. Durant has been a chuck master and it hasn't resulted in wins. Lebron is clear cut number 1 and if you're going to play the standings card then you gotta give more love to George and Duncan, or even Aldridge for that matter.

Durant's stats since Westbrook's injury: 34.5ppg/8rbs/5.5 asts/1.4 stls/2.1 threes/ 48.9FG% @ 22 FGA.
might be a good idea to check the stats before deciding to call someone a chucker. but i digress haters gonna hate

the mvp race is kind of confusing right now. last night durant had 37 pts, 4 rebs & 4 asts but his team lost while paul george had a somewhat quiet 31 pts, 3 rebs, 2 asts & 5 to's
lebron is playing tonight so let's see if he puts up another 30 + game while getting the heat out of their slump

Post his FT attempts. He's had the ball in his hands a large portion of the game and they've been losing. Utah? Memphis last night? Come on...

OKC In/Out Splits for the season
Westbrook IN (25 G)
+9.96 SRS, +6.3 Offense, -4.0 Defense
Westbrook OUT (13 G)
+2.90 SRS, -2.1 Offense, -4.4 Defense

LBJ's attempts to discredit KD's season and make a statement game have backfired terribly. KD very firmly in the MVP seat at this stage of the season.

This has been an odd bad stretch for both of the candidates leading the mvp this year.
