Doug McDermott

Post#1 » by JrueHK » Wed Jan 15, 2014 5:57 pm

Who can you compare to him in the NBA?

He has very nice shot, post moves, can play inside and out, good iq, active, good motor and has a nice touch.
I really like his offense game and somewhat reminds me of Love offensively. Not as good of a passer or rebounder though.

His lack of size and athleticism really hurts his chance to play well in the NBA though. Plus these days, teams are looking for raw with huge potential upside freshmen instead of polished and skilled big men.

Where do you seem him get drafted?

wally szczerbiak.
late lotto possibly. i have him early mid teens on my big board.
athleticism is a big a problem, but the other components of defense are effort and intelligence. doug's not lacking in the latter areas. i think he'll at least play hard and smart enough to be a passable team defender.

Can Doug actually be a starting small forward as soon as next season? Can he even play Small Forward at all? How Will he score in the NBA outside of open shots when he cant create on his own and he certainly wont be scoring in the post in the NBA.

depends which team drafts him. yeah, i think he can play SF some.
he can score off of movement. he moves extremely well off the ball. he knows how to read how he's being defended, like his defender's foot positioning or if his defender turns his head, it's an automatic back cut. he'd be exceptional in a read and react offense. he also has a knack for finding open seams and pockets in the defense for little pop up jumpers and quick release flip shots.

i think he'll be able to post up some 3's. not necessarily post up situations where doug is burying his man and calling for the ball. more so quick posts off of action like flex cuts, cross screens or baseline action where he can take advantage of single moves and his quick releases. if defended by 4's he does have a face up game as well where they have to play him close because of the shot which leaves them susceptible to blow-by's.

i also think he'd be exceptional in the pick n roll game because he can pop, roll (has really good hands and quick releases to get off shots in the intermediate range) and he has the mind to quickly recognize how the ball screen is being defended, so the counters are instinctual (like he knows when to slip or pop).

i think he'd have to go to the right team though. in an iso heavy offense with a lot of standing around i think that'd limit his dimensions offensively. he's not just a spot up shooter. teams with those type of offenses should stay away. teams who run more continuity, use tons of on/off ball screens, off-ball movement and read-and-react type offenses would be more ideal.

I think his ceiling could be like Rashard Lewis with more of a chance to be like Dunleavy

I see a lot of Carmelo Anthony in him. Not saying he's going to be Carmelo. Just saying that there are comparisons. If he's a number one option on a team, I think he could be an all-star in his first year. Of course, there aren't many opportunities for that. If he was drafted by the Lakers or Celtics, he could have a great first year.

Seems like the kind of guy Charlotte would draft in the top 5 and then be out of the league in 5 years.

He's going to be a poor defender, it just depends how he will do vs elite athleticism. He's going to have to be a Korver like shooter to open up the rest of his game.

I disagree with the Korver comparisons. He looks like him and can shoot really well, but he doesnt play like him at all. He creates his own shots, shoots over smaller defenders and has a little bit of a post-game. He's also quite big. He can bang with bigger guys. His problems are his speed in every direction and his defense. I think of him as Luis Scola that can shoot really well.

Jason Kapono. Slow, 3 point shooting specialist, who will have to be a reserve, due to being a turnstile on defense. Late 1st round pick.

Actually if you ask me which Center I want for my perfect championship caliber team, I will chose Asik hands down

I've seen bad comparisons, this is probably the worst ever.

McDermott is not an specialist.

Comparing Doug with Kapono is like comparing Stephen Curry with Eddie House.

Thinking Doug's a shooter is pretty ridiculous. He's a scorer who happens to shoot well...

Yep. His ceiling is something like Carmelo Anthony.

I really doubt he will be able to create for himself in the nba, he's slow and not athletic, he also doesn't have great size. If he can't play SF he will be useless.

if he can't play as a SF he could still be used as a stretch. also, i'd love to see PFs try to keep up with his constant movement. i'm sure it'd be frustrating as hell. bigs don't like to move around as much as wings.

I've been trying to come up with a comparison, but he's a unique player so I'll just call him Doug McDermott.

He can always have a role as a back-up PF, no doubt.

Where would you rank his off ball movement athleticism. I see those kind of players as more slow twitch dominant than fast twitch ie a reggie miller or rip hamilton who could run around all day because what they lacked in all nba explosiveness they had in great speed endurance ( could run pretty fast off ball for a really long time ) . Would mcdermott be as fast as them off ball for so much of the game.

He doesn't have Dunleavy ballhandling/passing/playmaking. And although he's a very good cutter, he isn't as fast as Dunleavy. It's very difficult for me to see him having Dunleavy's production as a wing in the NBA.

How much of a defensive liability at the 4 do people project him to be?

Will he produce enough with spot shooting and off-the-ball cuts to offset that (I'm assuming he's going to be neutral rebounding wise, even at the 4)?

I'm agnostic for the time being.
