Dwight Howard: Lakers Promised I'd Be Traded To Nets

Dwight Howard Promised Trade To Nets
January 18 at 8:24pm CST By Jonathan Nehring

In a discussion with Jessica Camerato of Basketball Insiders Dwight Howard revealed the Lakers promised he would be traded to the Nets before last season’s trade deadline. Howard was traded to the Lakers in August of 2012 and was rumored to be traded again mid-way through the season. Instead, the Lakers kept Howard for the season and he became an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Howard was “upset for a while” that he was not sent to Brooklyn but didn’t sign with them when he became a free agent. If Howard had been traded to the Nets, Brooklyn would have held his Bird Rights and been able to offer him a larger and longer contract than any other team this summer. Howard instead chose to sign with the Rockets where he has averaged 17.9 ppg and 12.5 rpg so far this season. The Nets instead acquired Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and others in the blockbuster trade of the summer.

Good god. I think I lose more and more respect for him each time his big dumb mouth opens. I would bet ANYTHING I have that Mitch Kupchak did NOT say, "Hey, Dwight, welcome to LA! Btw, I know you don't wanna be here, we'll trade you to Brooklyn this year! Nice knowing you for 5 months."

The front office should have just realized (like most of us did) that he was not worth a max contract and traded him for a couple prospects and draft picks last year before the deadline, because we could have got that.

Hard to take anything Dwight says seriously, but we definitely should have gotten some assets for him. Oh well.

I hope so, otherwise it paints the Lakers organization as horribly incompetent.

Jarrod Rudolph hinted at this last season remember. Rudolph aka DH12 mouthpiece smh.... He wrote that possible 3 team trade with Brk/Minny/LA. I'm just happy that guy is gone. Not nearly as dominant overall as he's made out to be. If this was prime Shaq then I'd say put up with the drama but he's nowhere near that level

Why would it paint the lakers as horribly incompetent? If there weren't any offers that were worth while, you don't make a trade just for the sake of making one.

One thing I think jim and Mitch have carried over from jerry buss and possibly Jerry west is that if you're price isn't met you walk away instead of caving.

We don't even know if they had discussions with other teams regarding trading him and from information released it doesn't seem like they did (I maybe wrong here and if so the rest of this post will be null). So to say there weren't any offers that were worthwhile is kind of jumping the gun. I mean if this is true (which, to clarify, i dont think is -- its too outlandish) they didn't even do the due diligence of shopping him around after he basically demanded he be traded.

He's just not good enough to really matter...Who really knows what's going on, you really can't trust what comes out of Dwight's mouth - he lies to the media constantly - this a well-documented fact.

I thought it was a bad move in the first place, Lakers should have targeted the best player available (Harden), not Dwight with all that Stan Van Gundy mess, a bad back, no post moves, looking up at 30 years old.

Let's say Dwight stayed, maxed out. I don't know if I really like that, to be honest. I'd rather give Jordan Hill a solid extension and save my money on a dynamic player who can control a game. I don't think Dwight Howard can do that anymore.

The idea of Dwight being a Laker for five more years? Thank goodness he's some other team's problem.

Damn, a couple of future picks would have been nice, it's way better than letting him just walk for nothing!

Plus it'll would have given the Heat anothe strong opponent in the east.
