Perkins play at center helped Boston to win a championship. The year after they won and were posed for a repeat run , KG got hurt and Orlando replaced Boston as the team representing the east vs L.A. The year after that, Boston got back to the finals, and Perkins got hurt in game 6, and the result was Boston lost game 7 and L.A won the chip. Boston arguably could've won 3 titles had KG and Perkins not got hurt. KG wasn't the center, Perkins was. Perkins gave Boston the edge inside and the size needed to contend with the huge Laker frontline.
OKC didn't get to the championship until they picked up Perkins to anchor the front court. What was the difference, they needed a defensive presence inside. I've never said Perkins wil get you 20 points, 13 rebounds. I said Perkins is a tough presence inside who can help cover Jeffersons weakness. Perkins or a Perkins type, fills a void and plays a role that can help this team. Lamarmatic said Perkins and Jefferson would struggle vs the pick and role. That's a valid point, but I would say teams don't win chips by picking and rolling. The teams that win chips have size, and this has always been the case. This is why Boston was so dominant a few years ago, why the Lakers were so domiannat with Bynum and Gasol, and Odom at SF, all 3 players about 7 ft tall.
Dallas had Dirk and Chandler, Detroit had Rasheed and Big Ben Wallace. Miami may not have a traditional center, which hurts them vs Indy who only lacked a real superstar or else they'd be champions, but Miami has size everywhere else. You will not win in this league unless your fundamental in your approach. We all know Jefferson is weak defensively, so it should be logical to get a big, tough, defender to help him. Maybe Perkins isn't the guy, but the premise that you need to match a weak big man, with a finesse big man makes little sense to me. This isn't Euro league play, (even though the league is trying to make it that) the big man position is being redefined, but the good teams know you need to have a true big to compete. Look at Portland, Aldridge and Lopez, Minnesota, Love and Pekovic. Spurs with Duncan and Splitter, Indy with Hibbert and West.
Miami only gets away with this because they are loaded with 3 of the top 10-15 players in the league, they are essentially a super team, but even still, which teams give the Heat trouble, teams with perimeter oriented finesse stretch 4's, or teams with height size and muscle?
