I still think trading that package for Gasol and Nash makes sense for both teams becaue it solidifies Lakers' tank position and saves them $4,417,686 on their salary cap in a season they're not making the playoffs. They'd still be $3,007,759 over the luxury tax threshold, but the ownership goes from paying $11,744,529 in luxury taxes to $4,511,639. A total saving of $7,232,890 in a losing season is important.
The only problem is that the Lakers would add $15,538,009 to their cap for next season, which would leave them with around 19M of cap space. I don't know what their plans for next year are, but this would probably be their lineup:
Marshall / Felton
Kobe / Young
cokehead / SF
PF / PF
Chandler / Sacre
That is still a lot of holes left to fill if they want to make the playoffs in the west.
This kind of make sense, but the Lakers balk at JR - they already have Nick Young for MUCH less. Felton and Chandler have both had success in Mike D'Antoni's system and his contract keeps them in play for Kevin Love. Gasol would give the Knicks a post scorer and capable 2nd option. Nash provides vet leadership and maybe can help in a limited role. But his contract is a year shorter than Felton's. I think the Lakers would need to throw in a future 1st to get the deal done.
JR needs to be involved for financial reasons, but would need to be sent to a team that is willing to take a chance on him for an expiring contract. San Antonio, Washington and OKC have the ability to make it happen.
I think I would still prefer a package of Lopez, McCollum, Leonard and a future first from POR. But your proposal is very very interesting.
Problem is the Knicks are still 1 or 2 moves away from becoming a contender and they lack the ability to get it AND pay Gasol. And at his age he will want to sign a multi year deal which will kill 2015 cap space. I'd like assets that can be used 2015 to help that core win. This team is not salvageable.
