Jabari Parker and Joel Embiid May Not Enter 2014 Draft

Execs Think Jabari Parker Won’t Enter Draft
January 20 at 3:40pm CST By Chuck Myron

Executives around the NBA increasingly believe that ballyhooed draft prospect Jabari Parker will choose to stay an extra year at Duke rather than enter the NBA draft this June, according to Sam Smith of Bulls.com. Parker, who grew up in Chicago, is No. 3 on both the DraftExpress and ESPN Insider prospect rankings, and his absence from this year’s draft would deal a blow to teams banking on a top pick in what’s supposed to be one of the best classes in years.

The presence of Jahlil Okafor, a former AAU teammate of Parker’s who’ll enter Duke next season, is weighing heavily on Parker’s mind, the executives believe. Parker also places a high value on education and feels he owes it to Duke to contribute to a better season than the Blue Devils are having so far this year, Smith hears. Parker has also seen the benefits that staying in school has provided to NBA stars in the past.

Recruiting analyst Tom Konchalski told Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv in November, when Okafor revealed he would go to Duke, that he thought the decision might influence Parker to stay in college another year so they could play together. The idea seemed far-fetched at the time, but now it appears it could indeed come to fruition. Parker, a 6’8″ freshman forward, won’t have to make his call on this year’s draft until the spring, so there will be plenty of time for him to go back and forth.

Joel Embiid Unsure If He’ll Enter Draft
January 20 at 7:10pm CST By Cray Allred

Joel Embiid’s entry into the 2014 draft isn’t a certainty, according to a report by ESPN’s Dana O’Neil. The 7-foot center has been a consensus top-five pick all year, and recently rose to the number one overall spot on ESPN Insider Chad Ford’s Big Board [subscription only]. Despite performing at a high level and gaining momentum with scouts, the Cameroonian says he isn’t sure this will be his last season with Kansas.

“I don’t know if I feel like I’m ready for all of this,” Embiid is quoted as saying, acknowledging his inability to drive a car, eat well, and other elements that go along with the pro game. His hesitancy is not just based on life practicalities, either. He has studied other skilled big men that have thrived in the league, concluding: “All of the great big men went to college at least two or three years. I think it’s a big factor. I don’t know if it will always work, but I think it’s the best choice.”

Embiid is averaging 11 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks in his freshman year. The report of his uncertainty comes on the heals of the news that NBA executives are increasingly expecting fellow top-5 projected prospect Jabari Parker to stay at Duke another year as well.

I could see some reactions of some of the execs who are reading this that have their teams tank this year...

this year is our really "chance" to draft a big name to make us a contender once again, until Kobe retire, and in 2015, we only have our pick if we draft in top 3. I can't endure another losing season, so is Kobe.

In before blatant hate to Kobe, please respect our franchise player, the end is near, we need to appreciate him while we can. Dont worry, people wont tag you as Kobe homer.

As far as Embiid and the other great bigs he's referring to(Shaq,Hakeem,Duncan)...Embiid is pretty old for a freshman, almost 20 yrs old so he can't really afford to stay 3 yrs in college

I think he'll declare, especially if he's the consensus no.1 pick by draft time...I'll be shocked if he doesn't declare

THey'd be stupid to not take the guaranteed money that comes with being a high draft pick. If they have bad injuries or slump hard next NCAA season, their draft stocks could plummet.

Nerlens Noel lost something like 10 million guaranteed from his draft sliding so far.

There is no reason at all for them to not enter 2014 draft.

Marcus Smart could be top 3 in the last draft, and contender for ROY, thus guaranteed max contract for him when his rookie contract is up.. but he chose stay another year.. trolling at its finest.

What do you expect them to say...they're in the middle of their seasons. At this point, most of them are considering staying because they're so attached to their teams.

Once March Madness ends, players start looking at their bank accounts. It's nearly impossible to pass up those millions, hence the low percentage of prospects who surprise everyone by staying in college.

No one leaves guaranteed money on the table but Marcus Smart did last year.

Our Lottery pick in 2015 is only top 5 protected right? I still think both guys come out after this season anyway

I understand Parkers goals but Embiid is definetly entering the draft IMO. He's to raw to cont. to stay in college which he could possibly get worse and slide in the draft. When you're player like Embiid and your draft stock sky rockets like it has this year you take advantage of it at any cost, especially considering where's he from (if he isn't from a rich family background).

When it's all said and done Embiid will enter. He's focused on this season so it's good for him to say that. Once the season's over I'm sure his people will sit with him and tell him that he should declare.

Any player projected to go top 5 in the draft would be a fool to risk that on another year in college... For what? A clear shot at #1? That's just being greedy and stupid...

Doubly so with a big like Embiid.

Maybe he doesn't want to go to Milwaukee.

Embiid should do what he feels is best for him.

i would hope he would land a Laker.

Wiggins needs more time to develop also.

Embiid looks good though.

Doesn't this type of news happen every year? And eventually all the projected top picks enter the draft. I can see players who have chance to drop to 2nd round consider skipping this draft. But top picks should enter the league and take the guarantee money!

actually in 2015, it's top 1-5 protected, its 1-3 protected in the years after that

2015 first round draft pick to Phoenix
L.A. Lakers' 1st round pick to Phoenix protected for selections 1-5 in 2015, 1-3 in 2016 or 1-3 in 2017 or unprotected in 2018 [L.A. Lakers-Phoenix, 7/11/2012]

so as long as we suck to a worse or 2nd worst record, we're golden

Embiid should stay. He needs to refine his post game a lot more. He doesnt have a got to post move or a counter move. Buto if I had to got with a ready to play now big Im going Cauley-Stine. He's just ask athletic and a little better offensively skilled than Embiid.
