Charlotte - All Star Game Location 2017

Post#1 » by MKGsMotor » Wed Jan 22, 2014 5:37 pm

So I'm hearing on Twitter that NBA Radio said a quote to the extent of "Charlotte will have a tough time topping the party that Toronto will throw" when discussing the all star game. Now rumors are spreading that Charlotte will host All Star weekend 2017. Lets investigate this! How awesome would that be??

I was the one who heard and leaked this on twitter. It was actually former Hornet Malik Rose that made the comment as well. I'll be interested to see what comes of this...If we host, that will be filthy.

I saw your conversation with Bring Back the Buzz....would Malik know information like this or was it just speculation?

He could possibly. I forget the host of the shows name. But they had been talking about the city of Charlotte for a little while leading into the discussion. Then talked a little more after that little quote.

Hey everyone..so I have been around these boards for awhile now, always reading but never really commenting. I would LOVE to host an all-star weekend!! However, I hate to rain on everyone's parade. About 3 years ago I had a friend who worked for the Bobcats in the season ticket sales office, I asked her this exact questions. "When will Charlotte host the All-Star game." Her comment to me was: We've been told by the league that we don't have anywhere NEAR the accommodations (hotel rooms) it would take to even be remotely considered for hosting an all-star game. Now, I know that within the past couple years since she's been gone, we've added hotel rooms, etc. but from the extent that she made it seem...we'd need A LOT more to be considered. Like I said, I hate to rain on everyone's parade but just wanted to share what I had heard (and yes, this was 3 years ago so maybe we've made strides). Keep up the great work on the board!

Exactly- If we can handle the DNC we can handle the All- Star game (or the F'ing Super Bowl).

Nice! I'll be thrilled if this happens. We'll have been the Hornets for three years by that point, and probably will be really good by then too.

Exactly. The All Star game would need less of everything than the DNC. We also handled the DNC so well that the RNC is looking to come here.

We would need less hotels, security, etc for an NBA All Star game than we did for the DNC. The city has grown tremendously in the past 3 years (including the nightlife)

I do remember there being some news articles back in December about how Michael Jordan was hopeful to host an All Star Weekend, and 2017 mentioned as a target date. I think we have a good chance. They do it in LA pretty often, big markets like New York/Brooklyn and Toronto are already booked.

I really hope this happens. It would definitely show a side of Charlotte that most don't get to see or won't even look at. The types of big name type people that not only play, but just attend the All Star game wold give a huge boost to the city of Charlotte and also hopefully the franchise down the road.

I'm sure it was posted on the board, I have been off for a few days, but I saw Jared Dudley's tweet about Charlotte and how much better it is in the time he has been gone. He was extremely impressed of the kind of city Charlotte has built itself to be. You get more guys like that seeing Charlotte and it can only help attracting players.

I have always wondered what All Star Games did to attendance for the franchises that hosted it. Maybe the game would drive more interest in the fans of that city. So I looked at the last 12 years, 11 cities (Las Vegas), to see if there was any kind of spike in attendance from the year before the host, the year of the host, and the year after the host.

Well, this was pointless because there is no spike or decline in fan attendance. On average there was a 1% increase from the year before to the year after. 2% increase from the year of to the year after. The big spikes positive and negative can be attributed to players(Dwight Howard twice) and winning and losing. So it doesn't really drum up much interest for fan attendance I do think that it would help get better players here which will progress this franchise tremendously.

i have very fond memories of the 1991 all-star game in charlotte. my dad took me to the game when i was a senior in high school. he somehow scored tickets thru his work. i believe it was the only time he and i went to a game together during the time the hornets were in town. he was a big sports fan, but never really had much interest in going to live games. whenever he would get hornets tix, he would just tell me to take a friend. after i came back from college, his health didnt really allow him to go to games. too much walking.

our seats were upper level and that place was jam packed, as always. i remember the national anthem was quite moving, because the game occurred around the time that desert storm commenced. bruce hornsby and branford marsailis nailed it. (see below)

charles barkley stole the show and was easily the best player on the floor that day. MJ was a turnover machine. and dominique got hung on the rim (1:50 in the clip below).

This would be awesome! I'd try to land tickets to the night before, and the game!
