I think we need to trade Monroe AND Smith

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Thu Jan 23, 2014 4:12 pm

Smith is an easy pick to trade for reasons already well documented on this board;

1) Low BBIQ
2) Chucker
3) Salary and length
4) Questionable heart/motor

But Monroe is not a good fit next to Drummond either. He's basically the PF/C version of Prince. Does some stuff ok, but nothing great. He still can't shoot the 15-18 foot J, he turns it over down low at least twice a game, is a liability on D, and I think we should trade him now while his value has peaked.

Trade #1) Smith for any expiring
Trade #2) Monroe for any decent value (SF, stretch-4, and/or future pick)

Time for a complete overhaul, tear down and build back up around Drummond.

I completely agree with this sentiment.

1) Sell off Monroe, Smith, Jennings, Stuckey & Datome for draft picks/guys on rookie deals/next year expirings

2) I'd try to find a team as dumb as us to do a reverse BG/Maggette deal with CV31 (we give an expiring this year for an expiring next + an asset)

3) I don't care about expirings this year, target the 2015 FA class (Rondo, Love, LMA, Afflalo, Marc Gasol, Dragic)

4) TANK and play Drummond/Mitchell/Singler/KCP/Siva and any assets we get from 1 & 2

If we can get bad enough to get this years pick we could be in a good spot to have cap room and be a nice destination for two of the 2015 FAs.

Agree with everything said, but I think we forgot something:

Step 1: Fire Dumars and Cheeks

Doubt it.

If anything does happen its going to be Joe D getting shafted in a trade that lands us nothing for a future perennial all star big.

Wish it was Jenning or Smith . At this point i'd be happy to take back a shorter bad contract just to get rid of them. Nothing irritates me more then a point guard who can't stop dribble penetration, and I don't care if he's averaging 8.5 assist a game.

Gores needs to fire Dumars now. Why let this incompetent idiot make a trade and make things possibly worse.

Any interest in a Monroe for Sanders swap? Could toss in Gary Neal/Caron Butler if you're going for "win now."

I got shot down for this one on the Bucks board pretty quickly. So, does Monroe just suck all of a sudden? What's the deal?

I don't believe that Drummond has proven enough to be a franchise player that you build you're entire team around, but he is easily our best prospect and at times our best player this year. I'm not satisfied with Smith/Monroe either at PF...mostly for the reasons you listed.

He's a shot-blocking C who is redundant with Drummond, but is getting paid a lot more and has attitude issues. No point in us trading for Sanders.

Greg Monroe is still our best bigman, Drummond has potential but he's just a garbage man right now. And, I still do not beleive that Monroe/Drummond don't fit together. So no, we need to trade Smith for a shooter and then roll with the twin towers at PF/C.

Moose is not a great defender, or even a good one overall yet, but I think he's perfectly adequate, and looks worse because we have no actual defensive system. I'd much rather keep him and move Smith.

Which leads to the question:

With all of these flaws...who the hell would trade for Josh Smith?

Dumars was the only GM foolish enough to throw serious money at this guy.

Actually, now that I think about it, Billy King would be dumb enough to trade a future draft pick for Josh if he had any left. You might be able to get Boston to swap Gerald Wallace for Josh Smith . (Since he's friends with Rondo.)

Beyond that, trading Monroe is the only way to go.

I DO think that next year, a starting front court of Drummond/Smith with a jump shooting SF could at least open things up offensively.

The Knicks would be dumb enough but Detroit would have to take back a bad salary that will end next season.

My deal would be this. Detroit sends J-Smoove and CV to New York for Stoudemire.

Amare's deal ends next season and they can use the stretch provision on him enabling them money to sign Monroe to an extension while the Knicks get their starting 4 to play with Melo.

Next on the list, Mo Cheeks ain't bad as a guy, but he ain't the right fit. Why didn't the Pistons get Lionel Hollins instead? He had a team in Memphis similar to the one that's in Detroit and he was able to get the most out of those players and turned a knucklehead like Z-Bo into a star.

Any thoughts?

Agree on Hollins being a better fit than Cheeks. But giving up Josh (who I've hated for years as a player) this early in favor of Amare seems short-sighted.

And it's my understanding a large contingent of Detroit fans do not consider Monroe a suitable building block to play next to Drummond.

The problem is not Josh Smith, the problem is his role. He would justify his contract if he was a 3rd option on a good team. In the 09-10 season Smith was 3rd in FGA behind Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford. He was shooting .505 from the field and he only took 0.1 3pt per game. That team was 53-29 under Woodson.

By the way, I would be more than thrilled if we trade him for expirings at this point as he is 7 years older than Andre. My point is you can't have a players' coach with a team like this. Even Cheeks who is a laid back coach who favors vets had problems with him. We needed a guy like Doug Collins.
