Moses Malone vs Karl Malone

Post#1 » by Quotatious » Thu Jan 23, 2014 3:38 pm

I think this should make for even an even better debate than Moses vs KG.

Who would you take? For those of you who keep all-time lists - who do you have higher? And for those who don't (like fpliii  ) - who do you think was a better/more impactful player?

Well, considering that Karl's better than Hakeem, and people here would take Akeem w/o thinking twice, this makes this question all the more easier for me. Give me the Mailman

Like with KG comparison, Moses needs less around him to win a title.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I think it's tough. Neither was a defensive anchor, which you'd want from a big (though Karl was a great man defender, and Moses seems to have been pretty good in that regard as well, at least in 82-83). Both were great rebounders (Moses being an all-time great on that end, maybe not far off from GOAT level), but I do have some questions about both.

With Karl, how much was due to the system and his PG? I'm actually very, very high on Stockton (maybe close to Nash), so I'm not sure about this.

As for Moses, from what I've watched of him (mostly playoff games from the early 80s), he seems to have some decent skill in the post. However I'm wary about having a guy who relies on putbacks for his scoring as my offensive anchor in the playoffs.

I'm actually not sure who I'd go with here, I'm definitely looking forward to reading this thread, though. :) Maybe I'll learn something about both guys.
Now that's the difference between first and last place.

And Rick Barry won a title with even less, do you prefer him over Kevin as well?

No, but that's not totally crazy either. The gap between Barry and KG isn't that big.

Yeah, I really did a double-take when I saw that.

All the statistical evidence points in Karl's direction, those two rings don't put him over Malone.

Sure if the only thing that mattered was the RS. Karl Malone can be the regular season king all he wants but everyone knows he is a horrible playoff performer. I can't think of a single great player that has a bigger dropoff from RS to PS play than Karl Malone. The mailman does not show up on Sundays.

Anyway I choose Moses. Karl Malone is a great player but he is meh in the playoffs at best for a alleged "ATG". KG also has similar issues as Karl but at least he is a much better defender and his T-Wolves teams were a lot worse than what Karl had.

It sure beats not making it past the first round over half his career

I'll take moses. I didn't watch much of them because I was not old enough/born but from what i've seen in their stats and their reps it's moses easily for me.
