Who could use Monroe?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Fri Jan 24, 2014 1:47 am

It is hard to guess what the Pistons are going to do for the trade deadline, but many of us have come to the conclusion that:
1) The Big 3 isn't working
2) Smith's trade value is not very high, maybe even negative
3) This is probably a good time to trade Monroe before we have to give him an extension
4) Trading Monroe moves Smith back to PF where we have a chance to get some better value from him

So, we trade Monroe. But to who? I've made a single assumption:
1) We can't trade him to a team with a good/great center

Teams with Good/Great Centers and not likely to want Monroe:
Sacramento - Cousins
Houston - Howard
New Orleans - Davis
Miami - Bosh
Atlanta - Horford
Indiana - Hibbert
New York - Chandler
San Antonio - Duncan
LA Clippers - Jordan
Chicago - Noah
Memphis - Gasol
Toronto - Valanciunas

That leaves us with these teams (including BRK since Lopez injured)
Brooklyn
Oklahoma City
Portland
Golden State
Phoenix
Dallas
Denver
Washington
Minnesota
Charlotte
LA Lakers
Cleveland
Boston
Philadelphia
Utah
Orlando
Milwaukee

Not sure who the most desperate team is, and who has a good SF to give us, but it seems like something is going to happen in the next few weeks.

I'd argue some of those teams would still find Monroe highly desirable. Anthony Davis plays power forward. Bosh is a power forward (Miami has nothing to trade anyways), Horford is naturally a power forward, they just slide him down in Atlanta because Smith was better at PF, Duncan is almost retired and he needs an heir. NY has Chandler, but he's not a long term solution. Also, Monroe is on another level than Jonas V. I imagine Toronto would at least kick the tires.

The real question is- what's the best package of players and/or picks can we get for Monroe? A top 5 pick in the 2014 lottery would phenomenal, especially if we could get a stop-gap SF as well.

Evan Turner and an unprotected Philly 1st rounder would be optimal.
Caron Butler and Milwaukee's 1st rd pick for Monroe and Jerebko
Orlando and their 1st rd pick and whatever for Monroe would be solid too, in my book.

This list is horrible. half those teams are playing without a C and almost all of them would dump there C for Monroe.

hawks, Pelicans and Miami would move there guy to PF for Monroe

Raptors, Knicks, Spurs, Bulls, Grizz and Clippers have the def C or system that would allow Monroe to play PF.

The other issue is that if you trade Monroe your going to be bringing one of there bigmen back. Ill bet the Grizz would love to trade Zach for Monroe and take the cheaper, younger player.

You also have to eliminate teams that can't afford to give Monroe a max extension, or could but don't want to go into the luxury tax. Furthermore, eliminate teams based on team fit and the direction they're going in- tanking teams don't want Monroe to drag their team out of the high lottery right now.

We're not getting a high or mid-lottery pick for Monroe, he is also not a cheaper option than anybody because he's about to demand a huge pay day.

Joe D will find someone. Nobody is taking the 54 million dollar man off our hands. "Joe's Last Stand" is coming soon, and it could help cement mediocrity for the pistons for the next 5+ years.

If Joe D trades Monroe I will follow him to that team until Joe D is fired.

I don't believe Monroe will be traded during the season because as has been mentioned - bad teams don't want to improve now AND because Dumars will not be allowed to make a Monroe trade by Gores. The current make-up is Joe's team for better or worse this season and he'll be judged accordingly by Gores.

I dont trust Dumars to make the right deal.. Firing Dumars then Cheeks asap should be Gores 1st priority.. its gotten to Millen status...

Those "bad teams" would be trading us a player that would likely give them just as many wins as Monroe would they not?

At this point, Monroe needs to stop being a team first player. He needs to just take the jumper. He'll hit the same % as josh smith at the very least. Once he starts doing that, those who want to trade moose instead of smith will realize their mistake.

He might actually be able to get his shot off if he does this.

How did I know you were going to say that lol.

Curious, do you think the Pistons could contend within the next couple years with Monroe/Smith as the big men and Drummond getting traded for a really good SF and back-up big? I mean a #1 option type SF with range.

Monroe/trade
Smith/Jorts
trade/Singler
KCP/Stuckey
Jennings/Stuckey

Smith is too **** stupid for any team to really compete with him as a starter.
