Fire MO Cheeks

Post#1 » by ComboGuardCity » Sat Jan 25, 2014 7:42 am

Yes he's signed for three years. Yes, there's a coaching carousel in Detroit. But Tom Gores needs to cut his losses and realize he's wasting potential revenue by putting an awful product on the floor led by an awful coach.

Eat the loss and pitch to Lionel Hollins.a guy that got to the WCF with tayshaun being his 2nd best shooter in the starting lineup. Give him say on the roster and I bet he comes on board.

No point in firing Cheeks if Dumars is still around.

I bet we'd be at least .500 with Lionel and that's all we want.

I still can't get over how dumb he sounds during press conferences.

Nah, let's tank. He's been an excellent tank commander so far, dragging this team to new depths. Plus he's ensure Dumar's departure, meaning that we have a shot at hiring a real coach next offseason.

Maybe but firing him now makes Gores look bad, and Joe even worse. Makes more sense to just fire Joe, and let the new GM/President do the firing at the end of the season.

It may look bad on Gores and Dumars, but Cheeks is a completely useless coach and needs to go.
With the roster we have now, we need a competent coach and cheeks just isn't cutting it.

Which is why I don't understand how he got the job. I can't imagine him sounding good in an interview.

Because he's the exact opposite of Frank.

I second this.

Also- Cheeks shouldn't be fired right now. He's currently aiding in Detroit's retention of their 2014 lottery pick.

Why he doesn't take a chance to Harrellson and Datome? I think with more minutes of them this team could be better...

Since Scott Skiles and John Kuester I don't see an HORRIBLE coach like him. Worst part is when you are watching the game and you really see that he has no fu**ing idea what he's doing.

Hiring coaches has never been one of Dumars' strong suits.

It really makes you wonder what his interview process consists of. How in-depth is he getting with these guys?

Joe: Hey, wassup?

Cheeks: Nada

Joe: I have a job for ya

Cheeks: Cool!

Joe: Want it?

Cheeks: Um, ok!

Joe: Sweet! Score!

6 months later....

Joe: What's the deal, Mo, why arent we winning?

Cheeks: 50-50 balls man....gotta get the 50-50 balls...its those damn 50-50 balls

Joe: Why aren't you getting the 50-50 balls, Mo?

Cheeks: Its unexplainable to me

Joe: What happened at the end of the NO game?

Cheeks: They made shots and we missed shots.

Joe: Did you think to tell the players to call a timeout?

Cheeks: I did, but there was nothing I could about it

Joe: How will you stop the losing streak?

Cheeks: There's nothing I can do about it

Joe: Why should I keep you employed?

Cheeks: 50-50 balls

Cheeks simply cannot be fired without Dumars going as well - otherwise Gores picks up the rep as a coach killer as well and no coach worth anything will ever come here. If Dumars was fired first/as well in a house cleaning, than the new GM would be given benefit of the doubt by prospective coaches.

I say hire Jeff Van Gundy into the front office and as GM and he can then hire Stan to be his HC. That would be a great "stability" message and let the players know who's boss and who will go in any power struggle or suckage.

Yeah, firing Mo Cheeks doesn't do us anything short term nor long term. We need a whole FO sweep if we're thinking coach firings. No coach will come here if Cheeks gets fired.

Good point about the coaching carousel. It's not a Pistons problem, but a Dumars problem. A new GM can come in with a relatively clean slate, and ability to institute the culture he see's fit.

I don't think JVG is any kind of reasonable GM candidate, considering he doesn't have any track record there. SVG would be an upgrade at coach, but they're not getting him to Detroit. He publicly stated in the off-season that he has no desire to coach in Cleveland or Detroit.

Fire Cheeks and make Chauncey interim coach for the remainder of the year. He wasn't voted the player to make the best coach two years in a row for nothing. Give him a chance and see what he can do.

Voted player to make the best head coach two years in a row?

When did this happen? Voted by who?

Keep Cheeks for the rest of the year. His rotations and treatment of Josh Smith and Jennings is exactly what we need to make sure we keep our pick.

They poll all the GMs at the beginning of each year on various topics, like who will win MVP, who will win the East, who will win coach of the year, etc And they also are asked which active player would make the best HC.

Chauncey was voted #1 for the second straight year. This year by a wide margin.

All the other GMs can see it, but apparently ours cannot.
