Jenkins' back must not be healing ...

Post#1 » by parson » Mon Jan 27, 2014 6:05 pm

... because now he's considering moving ahead with back surgery. Link: http://www.ajc.com/news/sports/jenkins- ... ery/nc3Cn/

The article's from this Saturday. Here's the pertinent part:
Chris Vivlamore wrote:
John Jenkins is seriously considering and will most likely undergo back surgery, according to a person familiar with the situation. Complete details of the procedure have not been finalized.

“I’m weighing my options on what I need to do to eliminate this thing forever,” Jenkins told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in December. “It’s been too long. It’s been preventing me from playing the way I need to be playing. I’m trying to play on it, play through it. It’s time to just get it out of the way forever.”

He needs to go get it done if hes not getting better. Sullinger did it and looks a lot better this year because of it.

Do we know the severity of the injury? I hear BACK SPASMS, but is it a disc or something?

I'm sure his own decision had a lot to do with it but the Hawks medical staff should have already been well aware that surgery was the likeliest and quickest manner to treat this ailment. They only just saw Marvin lumber about for almost 2 full seasons trying to just rest or work through his own back injury before he finally went under the knife after all. Although the injuries may be different the sport they play and its physical requirements are the same, a bit of folly as a shooter thinking that treatment alone would handle this when you are experiencing lack of feeling in your legs.

Man, best of luck to him. Back surgery is such a risky, potentially life altering option to make. I'm sure he didn't come to this decision lightly.

This definitely means he'd be out for the year, and likely means he'd miss a portion of next season as he continued rehabbing and working into game shape. I'm glad (for his sake) that his option was already picked up for next year by the team.

I still believe he has the opportunity to become a serious weapon if he can ever get completely healthy with a team that utilizes him properly.

JJ2 is officially out for the year. Sounds like the surgery went well.

Here's hoping year 3 is more productive for him than year 2.

John Jenkins underwent successful lower back surgery on Monday morning. The surgery was performed by Dr. Hal Silcox from the Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic.

Jenkins will undergo a period of rest and recovery, followed by treatment and rehabilitation, and will miss the remainder of the season.

The second-year guard appeared in 13 contests this season, averaging 3.1 points and 1.7 rebounds in 12.2 minutes.

This is a big deal. I've known many people to have surgery like his. When it doesn't work, it'll never be the same again - you can't repair the repair. And, when it does work, folks say their body moves differently sometimes, at least for awhile. Even today, this is still hit-or-miss surgery.

I'm sure Jenkins struggled with this decision. Hoping for the best...

I hope people feel a little silly claiming that he wasn't really injured and that this was just Coach Bud not developing players. This kid's career could be done.

Yikes! I assume this was aimed at me. I don't recall questioning the legitimacy of his injury, Didn't mean to. Though I still have concern with the amount of development time Coach Bud is able to give the youngsters. And I still maintain that sending him to the D-League this season was a poor decision. Particularly in light of a season ending back injury that's lingered for months.

But yeah. I hope things work out for the guy. Very glad his contract option was picked up for next year. (For his sake.)
