I wonder if anyone would object to me (or anyone really) running the tournament a second time, with teams and seedings exactly as they are, except by popular vote of the forum. It would be quite easy to do - there would just be one thread and a poll for each match up, and possibly one for general discussion and results. The GM's wouldn't have to participate. In fact, to be even handed, I'd probably ask the GM's to not post in threads concerning their teams since some wouldn't be inclined to go through it again.

Of course, I would let some time lapse between the end of the current tournament and the popular vote tournament to avoid any confusion. It would be interesting to see how different the results might be, if at all.

I think it was said before that this isn't going to be a regular thing on the PC board where an exception was made due to the different type of posters who frequent this section vs the Fantasy board. I'd imagine if one were done in the near future, it would be moved to the Fantasy board.

Yeah, I'm enjoying it a lot right now, but I'm just wondering how I'll feel if my team ends up getting swept out the first round lol

Loving all the breakdowns by the GMs and the great responses by the judges.

I notice tho that TMACFORMVP hasn't chimed in yet. Should I PM him? I'm not even sure he knows judging has started..

As someone who has TMac on his team, feel free to PM him. 8-)

If I were to be knocked out of the 1st round, I wouldn't mind. These are all stacked teams. I do like the idea of a losers bracket.

Is there any type of free agency in this league? Can I waive one of my players and pick someone up who was undrafted?

When RSCD3_ vs Bruh Man is decided, we can open the 2-7 match ups in each conference.

That is almost a whitewash as well. Just make the threads anyway, it'll only be a few more hours?

You got a tough match up ahead of you. Will Raja Bell be able to carry your team?

Post#51 » by HeartBreakKid » Tue Jan 28, 2014 6:00 am

Well, I guess it's time to explain my team/draft process.

First Round: Dr.J

Going into the draft, I was given the 15th pick. I simply went down my all time great list, and had Dr.J as the highest ranked guy. Was between him and the Malone(s). Picking Dr.J was an easy choice over them because I knew that if I couldn't get Karl I would get Moses and vice versa. I'm also of the note that Dr.J wasn't that much worse than he was in the late 70s even though he had injuries, he had figured out how to play the game so he never really fell off as a franchise player.

So with Dr.J as my core, I had a template of what else to secure. I needed shooters. I could afford to get a iso guy if I wanted too, because Dr.J could play off ball. Most importantly, I had a defensive anchor in Dr.J in a very unorthodox ways. This gave me flexibility in what type of bigs I could get, because I am very big on Dr.J's help defense, and statistically speaking it was captured in raw stats so I am confident I could defend my stance on rim protection.

Second Round: Karl Malone

So the plan was to pick what ever Malone didn't get picked by the person who had back to back picks. Neither one was picked to my surprise (and delight).

So I had to debate, Karl or Moses? It was extremely hard to be honest. Moses in all honestly, is easier to defend. He has the stats, the accolades, he also beat Kareem head to head (and I like Kareem in this format, very underrated player so I did want a hard counter to him). On my all time list, the two go back and forth quite a bit.

Ultimately, I thought Karl was a better fit. This early in the draft, I didn't want to limit myself on the type of players I could get. I knew that drafting Moses meant that it could potentially kill my spacing and I'd have to scramble for stretch 4s and lights out 3 point shooters. Karl gives a bit more breathing room for Dr.J to work with.

There were two bigger reasons for picking Karl, a little subtle but very important none the less. Moses Malone was a very poor passer, and I really did not want to deal with that. I didn't want to limit my teams offensive potential that early on by drafting a blackholish player.

The third problem was finding a defensive anchor. Much easier to find a defensive C anchor than a defensive PF anchor. Karl on the other hand is a good man defender, I knew if I got someone who could protect the rim, I would have a good defensive front court with J/Malone/Rim protector. Very fundamentally sound all around.

Moses did have the perks of playing with DR.J in real life, but I figured that based off reputation, Dr.J and Malone could probably co-exist. A perk of having Dr.J in my opinion, hard to see him getting into any fights with people.

Third Round: Artis Gilmore

This was my hardest pick in the draft. This was the pick that I edited my pick asap, but then changed it back to what it was originally :P.

I was really targeting a guard here. I wanted Manu Ginobli really bad on my team. I thought he fit with Malone and Erving perfectly. I was also pleased to see Clyde and Stockton on the board. After thinking about it tactically, even though I think Manu was the most essential player, he had the highest chance of being still around at round 4. On the other hand, I was almost positive Stockton would be taken if I did not take him there.

So it came down to Stockton vs Gilmore. I wanted a legit C, someone who I could put on the Shaq's and Kareem's of this world. Someone who wasn't a offensive liability like Ben Wallace (the type of C you would have to settle for later if you didn't get a good one early on). I decided that the difference between Gilmore and the C's left were pretty big, so it made the most sense to take him. I could always find other perimeter players to compliment my team, since my front court at this point was already finished.

Round 4: John Stockton

I was shocked that Stockton had lasted that long. There were some analysis that put Stockton on a pretty similar level to Nash, that I found to be pretty convincing, so I was very happy in landing John, and even more surprised people skipped out on him.

I was looking for any guard that had legit 3 point range at this point. PNR play was a plus, and John has that in spades. Stockton-Malone combo was a coincidence, a very good one at that.

At this point, I also liked the idea of having great out let pass defenders in Stockton and Erving, who were good at playing passing lanes. I would have picked Manu over Stockton if Manu did not get picked, because I kinda fancied having a better man to man defender on the wing.

Round 5: George Gervin

I needed more range, and Gervin coincidentally the best player on the board by a pretty large amount. Was a no brainer even though I don't like Gervin since he's a one way player. Usage wise he is a bit troubling, but the baggage he brings is more than worth it for the elite offense that he has (I liked the idea of having a lot of good scorers, but not having a true go to guy like a Lebron James type). With Stockton at the helm, I think my team could feed the right guys at the right time.

I actually would have taken Mitch Richmond if he had been available ( he was picked earlier in this round). Two way player who had 3 point range, thought he was just a better fit for a roleplayer despite being a vastly inferior player.

Round 6: Kevin Johnson

Like Gervin, this was just a BPA no brainer. I lied when I said Gervin was the best player by a large amount, but at this time I wasn't fancying getting a 3rd guard. I did see that KJ was on the board in Round 5, but there was no reason to draft him when I could get him 2 or 3 picks later, Gervin was a higher priority since I needed a 2 guard.

Anyway, drafting KJ, I want him to be a God amongst men, which against most teams 2nd units he will be. Not going to be a start ideally, because Stockton has better roleplayer capabilities.

Last, I scanned everyone's players because I took KJ with the purpose of crippling other people's teams. In other words, I had noticed that people held off at not taking a PG all the way to the 6th round, those that didn't I felt I punished significantly by taking Kevin Johnson off the board. I knew that there would be a few teams that would be very baron at the PG position. My bench PG was better than half of the teams starting PGs.

Round 7: Bill Laimbeer

Was very happy Bill was on the board. I needed a "hustle" player, someone who would get in and just hack the other bigs too. Bill fit that pretty perfectly.

It was between him and Oakley. TBH at this point I was thinking I would draft both of them. I was really salivating at having Stockton, Laimbeer, Oakley and Bowen all on the same team - as well as having other physical players like Erving and Malone.

Ultimately, Bill has stretching capabilities which is something that my team lacked, so I had to take him over Charles.

Round 8: Bruce Bowen

I could have got Charles Oakley here to combo with Bill. I really wanted to do it just because I thought it would be funny/intimidating, but I did the more rational thing and got a shut down defender at the perimeter position.

Thought about Tony Allen, but he's a D guy when I want a 3ND guy. So it was between Bowen and Battier, I basically did a coin flip. Shane prob a better shooter but worse defender, I actually think Shane was an inch better for my team. However, Bowen has a much better reputation, so I decided to just roll with that.

Round 9: Rip Hamilton

I was kinda indifferent at this point because the players I wanted had been taken. I am planning on running 8 players, so Round 9 and 10 were not that important to me.

I did want Oakley as I stated.

I wanted Rashard Lewis, but I thought he had been taken (turns it out it was Reggie Lewis).

Went with Rip because he's a good off ball player. Basically does what Iceman does, really just a raw depth pick.

Round 10: Andrew Bogut

I still wanted a goon, so I got a big guy who could protect the rim. Bogut's passing was a big plus too. Didn't really mind that I had to take Bogut when he was young since he still did the things he would need to be a roleplayer on my team. Figured more size is the best way to spend your 10th pick.

TBH, I'm really digging the Magic vs Nash here. As far as PGs go, probably the match up everyone wants!

Magic Worthy...Nash Dirk. What's not to like.

I just noticed that Shaq, Kareem, Robinson, Ewing, Parish, and Dwight are all in the same conference which leaves Hakeem, Zo, and Moses in the other.

No offense to Sagittaron, he has a great team around Magic, but the issue with his team is he really doesn't have anyone in the starting line-up who can consistently create his own shot. Everyone will be dependent on Magic. And the thing is, I think he messed up with the years he selected. If he had chosen Magic '89-91 or '87-'89 I'd have been a lot more afraid. But as it stands, '85 and '86 Magic were great players, no doubt, top 3 in the league. But it was the fact that he had Kareem who could handle the iso scoring load that allowed Magic to be a true playmaker at his destructive best. Magic had the numbers at that point with the efficiency and all, he scored 20+ ppg in the POs, but he didn't have the skillset to consistently take over a game scoring wise. He didn't need to, because Kareem could.

Now with the current line-up, he has Worthy, who can post up a bit and drive, but not consistently. Kemp is entirely dependent on opportunity baskets. Dale Ellis is a spot-up shooter nothing more. Deke, don't get me started.

Too much pressure on Magic, and plus the team doesn't have his later scoring skills to fall back on in the event they need him.

In my case, I have Nash and Dirk who are both elite scorers (Nash scored 24 ppg on 61% TS in the '05 Playoffs, so he can do it on volume too), Rice isn't too far behind, and then I have Parker on the bench who can also create stuff out of literally nothing.

The way I'll set up my rotation, I'll always have either Nash or Parker in with either Rice or Dirk, at the very least. No shortage of offensive anchors, plus I'll always have a couple of shooters in too.

Offensively I'm just very confident about this matchup. I hold no illusions that my team is elite defensively compared to others but between Dumars, Pressey and Cummings I think I'll stifle Magic enough to basically sever the blood-flow of Sagittaron's team, and my offense does the rest.

I fully agree.
That was exactly my first thought as well: 85-87 Magic was fine, but his half-court SCORING was not on the same level than later... Anytime I see Magic from the late 80's or even early 90's he almost seems like a different player compared to his earlier years... at times, he just seems unstoppable, not unlike MJ in a way... (of course, his skillset is totally different, but in the end he seems to score almost at will). I definitely would have chosen a later version of Magic!
PC Board All Time Fantasy Draft:

PG Mark Price (92-94)
SG Manu Ginobili (05-07)
SF Larry Bird (84-86)
PF Horace Grant (93-95)
C Dwight Howard (09-11)
+
Bernard King (82-84) Vlade Divac (95-97) Derek Harper (88-90) Dan Majerle (91-93) Josh Smith (10-12)

In a similar way, it would be interesting to have a period for trades and waiver pickups between the draft and the games. Something to consider the next time.

Anyone wants to take a stance at my matchup against Notanoob? I'm asking because I just can't wait to see how it turns out, boy I'm so excited for that stuff.

I'm afraid that most people will take his team because of Hakeem, but they'd be seriously underestimating peak Zo. Obviously I'm not saying that I expect Mourning to go toe-to-toe with Olajuwon, but I'm sure he'd hold his own. They were roughly the same size (Hakeem ISN'T a legit seven footer, he's more like 6'10'', and only slightly taller than Zo), and Alonzo was even stronger than Hakeem physically, and he could be extremely aggressive attacking the basket. Notanoob didn't even take the best possible version of the Dream - this would be '93-'95. Obviously the difference between the '93 and '96 Olajuwon isn't huge, but it's rather visible in terms of his athleticism, which clearly wasn't the same anymore in '96.

I'd say that this matchup may actually be one of, if not THE most interesting in the first round of these playoffs, in terms of battle between players from the same position. I'd say that this could like like prime MJ vs prime Kobe - Jordan is clearly the better player, to the point where it's not even debatable, but going head-to-head against each other, anything could happen.

Olajuwon is most likely going to have a much bigger role on offense on Notanoob's team than Alonzo will on mine (my team will be more perimeter-oriented in terms of offense, but the balance will also be fine, as I have great post-up guards on my team), so Mourning may actually be in a really good position to do some damage, considering that he won't have to be the focal point of his team's offense, unlike he actually was in his prime, pretty much from his rookie season.

BTW - viewtopic.php?f=64&t=1246592

Look at Colts18's opening post in this thread, and how much better Zo actually was on defense during his 1997-2000 peak, than he was before that. Just some food for thought. I know that by 1999/2000, when Zo actually peaked, all of the great bigmen except Shaq and Duncan were washed up, but he obviously didn't really face them often enough to make an assumption that their decline enhanced Zo's growth. He just matured during that time, and it was especially evident by him becoming more focused and consistent on defense. He was actually a little prone to mental lapses early on in his career in Charlotte, but he corrected that in Miami.

I will have to say, first blush, I'm inclined to go with Notanoob.

This one's tough because Hakeem is God in these parts and Kobe is pretty disliked by a lot. Pierce is also highly thought of. But on that note, Zo is well regarded so you might get some slack there.

I'd attack it from the standpoint there aren't great shooters among the best players around Hakeem. Good, maybe, but not great. I'd also question how Carter will fit with him. If he's not the guy on offense his value is compromised. You've also got Brad Miller, and he and Zo both have the kind of game that could test Hakeem's temper.

You've got a nice blend offensively. Chauncey is a versatile guy that can play whatever role alongside Kobe, and Mullin is deadly from the outside. Zo had a crdible offensive game, as did Odom.

imo quotatious you picked a terrible first player to build around and you didn't put together a very good team around him.

* not talent-wise particularly, but fit-wise. that is if you plan to run the offense through kobe (which I am assuming you will otherwise drafting him with that pick would be even more baffling)
