Gotcha. What you just described is the concept. How it plays out, Smith passes to Monroe in the post, then moves to the other side. His man sags, closing in on Monroe. Monroe passes out to Smith due to having no reasonable shot, Smith is like "Dang son, I'm wide open. Time to get over my shooting slump!" and Whiffs.

BTW, I hope I haven't come across as too rude. I never mean to be, but it happens naturally sometimes. I enjoy heated discussions.

Josh smith needs to stop shooting so threes. Josh was brought here to compete with paul george and lebron at the small forward position. Which he clearly can do. Josh can defend and score on lebron and paul george Which is extremely valuable to have. Greg Monroe still can't shoot which is why he is te problem. Again.. Let me repeat. Josh needs to stop shooting so many threes and limit his jumpers to more cutters to the basket. Josh was brought here to handle the dominant small forward play in th nba. If the pistons want to build a championship team they need a talented small forward as well. Josh's ability to play weak side defense and man to man defense on lebron and paul george is really valuable. Again.. Hence.. Which is why josh is joes guy. Joes trying to build a winner and that caters to other players like lebron and paul george. That caters to mathups against other top teams. Monroe was thougt to being a deent power forward but hasn't shown the WILLING and CONSISTENT ability to shoot midrange jump shots every single game. This is a large problem when constructing a lineup of josh and Drummond.

This is nonsense. Smith has shown no ability to defend premier SF or score on them.

Indiana
Game 1
Smith- 30 points/7 boards on 45% FG, 25% 3
George- 17 points/9 boards on 29% FG, 20% 3

Game 2
Smith- 16 points/7 boards on 31% FG, 17% from 3
George- 31 points/10 boards on 67% FG, 50% from 3

Miami

Game 1
Smith- 13 points/4 boards on 43%FG
Lebron- 24 points/9 boards on 67% FG

Game 2
Smith-15 points/4 boards on 33%FG, 0% 3 (0 for 4)
Lebron-23 points/6 boards on 53% FG

Addtionally, Smith's PER at SF is 12, his opponents PER at SF is 17. Smith is playing like the worst SF in the league, he cannot score and cannot defend the position.

Be careful. Now you're about to get crucified for using numbers as proof of something, or told that Josh does these mysterious "other things" he keeps getting credit for.

It is nonsense.

No it's not nonsense. The minutes josh played when guarding/playing against lebron and guarding george were solid defensive minutes and solid offensive minutes.

If we didn't have josh smith at all those offensive numbers from lebron and george would be higher.

Without josh in a seven game playoff series. We would be toast. A four game sweep easily and paul george and lebron would average an easily > 30ppg

Do you feel comfortable trading josh and starting singler?

No josh means a gaping hole at the 3.

 You have no argument. Just because you want to believe that Josh is a good defensive SF, simply doesn't make it so. Hell, Josh let Caron freaking Butler go off for 30 against him. Josh cannot keep up with average SF's much less elite ones.

I would absolutely feel comfortable starting Singler, he can shoot at a reasonable clip. I recall us not having Smith last year, who guarded Lebron and George then? Was their scoring output THAT much higher last year without Smith than it was in the games shown to you where Smith was guarding them? That's our proof right there.

And we aren't going make it longer than 5 games in ANY 7 game series with Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings shooting us out of games in tandem, take note of those words.

BTW, there wouldn't be a need at all for anyone to need to play ISO and get their shots off if we had any semblance of ball movement on offense. Oh yeah right. We can't. Because of spacing.

This board has been light years better the past couple weeks now that were all getting on the same page.

josh smith is a piece you can have to win a championship. Remember when we had tayshaun and he struggled to score on lebron? Or paul pierce? Or other playoff moments. Josh has the ability to score against anyone and defend anyone. This is not desirable? Just put him around high iq players and a better coach and he will be a niece piece. Joe added him as a piece to build. I don't think jennings and Monroe are staying for long. If so, I'd be shocked. Also, if trade rumors are circling then that means gores is not firing joe. If he was, why would he let him make a deal?

To be fair, Lebron spends a lot of time at PF.

That said, I think we all (well almost all) can agree that the experiment with Smith at SF is a disaster. But I don't think it's fair to comment on his PER, without pointing out that at PF, even in a career worst year, his PER is fine. Better (especially defensively) than Moose's at PF in fact:

Smith's PER at PF is 17.6, his opponents is 15.2
Monroe's PER at PF is 17.0, his opponents is 19.1

For the record:
Monroe's PER at C is 19.7 , his opponents is 15.5

Now obviously it's far from an exact science and part of this may be Moose spending more time against the opposing teams starting PF, but it looks to me that Smith should stick to playing PF and Moose should stick to playing C.

Please stop using 82games and PER to determine defensive ability.

82games doesn’t explain how they determine when a player is playing which position, and their feed provider doesn’t have this data. Furthermore, using opponent PER as a defensive measure is silly. If someone holds Josh Smith to 25% shooting but he still puts up 20 points, Smith will still register a high PER for that game and somehow suggest that that person is a bad defender.

DBC10 wrote:Dang I was actually going to make a thread titled, "The Mystery of Josh Smith"

It was going to be about his offensive lowlights and as well as dispelling any myths about him as well. I guess I'll do it here, if you want, you can also quote my post and paste it onto the first post too.

Myth 1: "If Josh moves to his natural position at the 4, he'll chuck significantly less and play more near the basket."
Answer: False: Image - Courtesy of reddit via DetroitBadBoys
That's from this season and commenters regarding that picture had this to say as well.
He needs adderal. -redditor

he needs a shock collar for every time he shoots a three
He would die of complete electrocution.

Myth 2: "Even though he's 28, he can change into more of a traditional PF and you can teach an old dog new tricks."
Answer: False: Image
He played his natural position all of last year and ended that year by shooting 17% over his given shot attempts at the 3 point line, 47% of the time at shooting the midrange and 36% of the time, he took it to the rim. So no, he will still chuck off a significant amount of his shot selection at either midrange or the 3 ball.

Conclusion: He's not going to stop shooting and contributing to his historic lows in FG%. If you have a bigman that's willing to shoot with this much frequency and with miserable success rate, he's going to shoot you out of games or at the very least it'll be a roller coaster whenever he plays. I'll end with this:

Image

Also more on that here: http://www.detroitbadboys.com/2014/1/16 ... h-sf-vs-pf

Because josh smith is as putrid as a midrange shooter as a 3 pt...

Him at pf would have him taking shots at the same accuracy but take away the 1 pt benefit when he actually hits one of four or whatever...

Oh also a guy who knows his limitations can be more useful on a good team than a talented guy who cant fit.

Id rather have MKG than Smith

Anddddd I'm just gonna leave this over here.....http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story/_/ ... st-shooter

So you chastise monroe for being a bad midrange shooter but let smith off the look because he's a good defender. First of all josh smith cant guard 3's anymore, he's lost a step or two laterally and anyone wing with a set of wheels can blow by him.

Oh and as for score on lebron and PG. Nope, he cant drive as well as before, shoots terribly and has a decent post game that A. ( wouldnt work against lebron ) and B. ( Is ridiculous to go to against indiana's frontline) Miami and indiana win that match up 10/10 times.

Josh Smith,

Put all these guys on ignore. Did you hear me? PUT ALL THESE GUYS ON IGNORE! They've never played professional basketball. They don't know the sweet ecstasy of the ball gliding off your fingertips, regardless of where it goes. You didn't become a basketball player to listen to a bunch of pimply forum trolls, statheads, coaches, or casual observers. No, you were put on this Earth to bounce as many basketballs off rims and backboards as humanly possible. They don't understand your mission. I do. Tune them all out and FULFILL YOUR DESTINY!!!

Good, then you know how many times Smith has passed the ball down to Monroe in the post and he could do nothing with it, resulting in one of A. a long shot from Jennings B. a long shot from Smith or C. a Monroe turnover.

That's because Smith's man is already sagging off and down on the block?
This. It's why you don't see Jennings drive at all anymore whenever the big 3 play nor KCP. You can't drive when all 3 defenders are sagging inside.

I'm pretty sure the reason Jennings doesn't drive to the hoop is because of the fact that when he does drive, he is one of the worst finishers in the league, not because of our spacing.

He seems to finish quite well on the break, other than spacing I think his biggest issue getting into the lane is the fact he's 160lbs.

HEYO! I knew we could find common ground. Yes, Brandon is twigly. In fact, his protruding cheekbones haunt my nightmares. He isn't a fantastic finisher, but I think lack of physical power is a strong cause as well that's sometimes overlooked.

Also more on that here: http://www.detroitbadboys.com/2014/1/16 ... h-sf-vs-pf

josh smith's FG% was 46.5 last year, his career FG% was 46.1. his FG% is 41.4 this year.

so, you has debunked nothing.
