Could we retain Monroe?
When I say we I'm talking of US, the fans. Can we put pressure on the front office of the Pistons for keeping Monroe and signing him? Like a signature campaign or whatever.

Re: Could we retain Monroe?
I'm sure if the fanbase makes an absolute ruckus to retain Monroe, then maybe Dumars will stop being dumb. Otherwise, I don't see it happening and we'll probably trade Monroe and have Smith for the entire duration of the contract. And then our whole franchise collapses due to mediocrity and rollercoasters of having a chuckfest in Commander Smith and Lieutenant Jennings.

it's possible to do it, but the fans have no say unfortunately.

Re: Could we retain Monroe?
If Dumars wouldn't have signed Smith than yeah. Now there's no sense in spending that kind of money to another frontcourt player. This team has to many holes from the bench to the starting lineup that need fixed more than having another center. Unfortunately unless Smith can be traded then trading Monroe is our best option at filling out the team.

Re: Could we retain Monroe?
Of course we can retain him. Even if we didn't have our somewhat healthy financial situation, we could just pay luxury taxes to keep him. So "Could we?" - yes. "Should we?" That's another question.
He's restricted this summer, so he doesn't have a lot of leverage and we have a lot of time to resolve this if we want to drag this out. The big issue is if he is unhappy or doesn't like playing with Drummond (Smith is another issue). If he wants to play center, then he will want to play elsewhere. And if we can get a good deal, we probably should trade him.
The big question is what can we get for him. We've had a lot of threads on this so I'm not going to regurgitate them, but if we can get great value for him, sure. Otherwise, let's extend him. I'm hoping this is what Dumars/Gores is thinking as well.

Re: Could we retain Monroe?
I don't see the huge rush in building this team and filling all of its holes. I mean, we aren't going to contend next season just because we've shipped out Moose and added some SF like Trevor Ariza. I say that we keep Monroe because he's the better player, could still improve (give him one more season, but no more), isn't nearly as infuriating to watch as Smith, and would have a prime around the same time as Drummond if things worked out. Sign him to whatever deal we have to, try and ship out Smith first. A new coach won't have made any promises like Cheeks has, so will probably be more willing to bring Moose or Smith off the bench if you want to balance the starting lineup. There's no real point in selling off Moose for pennies now. By the time Drummond is up for an extension, JSmoove will be expiring, Jennings will be gone, and I imagine we'll be able to move Smith then if we haven't already, giving us more than enough cap space to keep Drummond.

No owner is going to think like that. You have to start filling out the roster and focus on winning games. Its been 5 years without playoffs and a winning record. This team is starving to move forward and another 5 year plan can't happen but we need to be smart and make sure we get the right value back him. If Dumars wasn't so dumb he could have filled out the roster real nice with all the money he spent on Smith but now we have to try it again.

Can we stop acting like positions on the basketball court are the same as football and baseball? What does "playing center" even mean? Will Greg never have the opportunity to work out the post even if Smith is traded and the team decides to fully develop Drummond's post game? The assigned positional roles in basketball are not as defined as other sports.

You don't have to have a stretch four to win. Monroe is extending his range little by little.
Hell, even if he doesn't, 10 years ago we were all screaming for Sheed to get his ass in the post because of the success he was having going to the well. How could he have been so effective there if Ben was there 'clogging' up the paint?

Difference with those frontcourt are they don't play along Smith as well. Smith is here whether we like it or not so why would we pay Monroe big money as well too?

ESPN is saying Joe is telling teams that Monroe is not available.

All three of those combos featured at least one elite post defender and the other one was at least adequate, or near elite.
Monroe isn't even teetering near being an "okay" defender. Also, Zach, West and Pau Gasol are very, very good mid-range shooters. Hell, Andrew Bynum and Pau could knock down 15-foot jump shots incredibly well. Additionally, two of those three combo's also have the luxury of playing with an all-nba wing, Detroit doesn't have anything remotely close to that.
Unfortunately, your comparison has no legs.

Doesn't mean Smith isn't available.

Re: Could we retain Monroe?
This summer? Sure. He's a RFA. It should be a pretty easy call. He'll get pretty big offers, but he deserves that. We aren't in a position to just give away talent.
In the longrun, obviously something has to give. Even if smith wasn't signed, we already have Dre to develop. It's hard to play 2 guys who can't hit a shot outside of 6 ft. I'm sure everyone was hoping that Monroe would develop that 12-15 footer, but that hasn't happened. Our issues at the 3 make that look even worse, but it wouldn't look so good even if we had more perimeter shooting at the 1-3.

Monroe isn't teetering near being an ok defender? The myth continues...

No thanks. Monroe isn't that important in my opinion.
