In each match up, GMs will offer their preliminary strategy for beating the other team and reasons for why their team is stronger. GMs will also have the opportunity to respond to the opponent's strategy. Judges will offer any comments and questions they have of the GMs and finally will cast their vote for whichever team they think is stronger simply by saying 'Team A wins this matchup' or 'Team B wins this matchup'. Whoever gets more votes moves on.

Good luck!

Fantastic matchups here.

Ewing vs. Shaq, Durant vs. Hill, Westbrook vs. Penny, etc.

Both team's top 3 picks are absolutely frightening (also funny to see Durant matched up vs. Westbrook), I just think O_6's team has less question marks - since it's a 3 year peak, batmana can't simply go '01 Shaq and utterly eviscerate any non-Olajuwon center on both ends (in other words, he can't have Shaq's peak offense and defense at the same time, most probably), whereas O_6 can always match Ewing's peak defense with Durant's peak offense.

Of course that can be offset by the supporting cast, but I think it might be a factor when the judging comes.

Seems to me Shaq swallows up Ewing and Durant isn't dominant enough to offset him.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Really? This is peak Ewing, a 25 ppg scorer who doubled as either the best or second best interior defender in the league with Hakeem/Robinson.

Shaq is better but Ewing is no joke. Is Diesel mobile enough to deal with Ewing when he pulls out of the paint and also anchor the defence at the same time?

Wallace is as physical as Oakley and a better player as well. Overall O_6 has beastly interior shooting that can completely screw with the defense.

The perimeter players are somewhat a wash. I like the Durant-Hill matchup. Penny-Russ would be a joy to watch.

I would give this to O_6 by the thinnest of margins. He's one of the few teams that wouldn't be troubled by batmana's physicality.

I disagree with just a couple things here, but I'll save it for after the fantasy owners have their discussion. I figure it's better if they come up with their own strategies.

Super interesting matchup. Normally Prime Shaq eats everybody up for BBQ chicken but Prime Ewing + Sheed is a great frontcourt combo to combat him with. (Similar to the Lakers series against Ben Wallace + Sheed, where Ben was able to single cover Shaq well enough most of the time, so that the Lakers' set 3 point shooters didn't get enough kick-out wide open 3's.)

Paul George guards Durant... Westbrook on Penny... wow. Great match ups. George + Westbrook with swagger and intense D through the roof taking on two of the smoothest guards ever. But then Batmana has Grant Hill, so maybe Battier plays in the starting unit to try to offset him? Probably don't want Iso Joe defending Grant. So many interesting match ups from top to bottom. Wow much competitive. Such interest.
On October 31, 2009, against the Kings, a bat descended onto the court causing a stoppage of play. As the bat flew past, Ginóbili swatted the bat to the ground with his hand. He then carried the creature off the court, earning the applause of the crowd.

Im surprised not to see more shooters paired with Shaq, but unless O_6 has something up his sleeve, Im not sure its going to matter. I like the top-end talent a lot more on Shaq's team even if Durant's team is clearly deeper. For a series, stars matter a lot more than depth.

Huge Durant homer here. There's no such thing as guarding Durant. You can get inside his head and get him frustrated, and then make his performance anemic, or you deny him the ball with tons of trap defenses and phisicallity off the ball. I just don't see the hard nosed defenders in batmana's teams to do that kind of dirty play. The players I saw taking the best out of Durant were Ron Artest for the Lakers in 2010's first round, Tony Allen for Memphis Grizzlies and Jason Kidd in the 11 WCF, because they did exactly that. Trapped him, got inside his heade, frustrated him, and then his own mind guarded him: he became anemic. George Hill and Paul George imo doesn't have what it takes to defend Durant. Two classy players can't take on Durant, imo. You have to be mean. No, you have to be a team and trap him.

Well, after both No. 1 "seeds" got eliminated, it's time for the 2-7 matchups. I had some time to think of my strategy for this one. I am not sure how to link directly to my post in the Playoffs thread with the explanations for each of the picks I made but it can be found on this link: viewtopic.php?f=64&t=1299878&start=30

Now to the particular matchup:

Depth chart:
Shaq (36)/Muresan (12)
Oakley (20-28)/Mason (20-28)
Hill (26-30)/Kukoc (13-16)/Mason (2-5)
Roy (26-30)/George (18-22)
Westbrook (33)/Conley (15)

On defense I will play the opponent’s team straight up. He has too many good shooters and scorers and doubling is not worth it. I don’t wanna leave anyone open. Shaq can guard Ewing 1-on-1 down low; Westbrook will look to stay in front of Penny, and the 2 and 3 positions will be somewhat interchangeable. Initially Grant Hill will defend Durant but Paul George will be the secondary defender for Durant and in those moments I could put Kukoc on a 2-guard, or play Roy and George at the 2 and 3 for some spot minutes. I will also play a little Anthony Mason at the 3 to wear Durant out with his physicality. I will wait for my opponent’s rotations and minutes for all players to give more detailed defensive assignments or rotations.

Offensively I will run things inside-out. My team will play mostly a half-court offense (but not an ultra-slow tempo). I will try to get the ball to Shaq down low as often as possible and let him make a move. He can take anybody 1-on-1 offensively or he can make the right pass as the double-teams come. I guess he will be seeing mostly Ewing but that doesn’t bother me as Shaq at his best can take any center in history 1-on-1. Shaq is bigger and will give Ewing lots of problems, even if Ewing was an excellent post defender. Shaq will also play Ewing 1-on-1 on defense as his strength will help deny Ewing a deep position. Thus, Ewing will be forced to take a jumpshot or make a move. Even though he could hit a jumper, I will live with that. I also rely on Shaq’s physicality to bother Ewing and tire him. I will definitely not send a help defender as I don’t wanna leave a shooter open and give up an easier shot. I’d rather have Ewing score if his shot is falling. Shaq will also protect the paint with his size and shot-blocking. Him and Oakley/Mason should discourage too many drives to the rim and change a lot of shots.

I will try to implement some sets from the triangle offense as the ball goes down low to Shaq. I can rotate my perimeter players on the strong side, with Grant Hill or Westbrook cutting to the rim, and Roy looking for a spot where he can get the ball and shoot or take his man off the dribble. Oakley/Mason will stay strictly on the weak side, positioning for the offensive rebound. Oakley in particular was a great offensive rebounder who can use his body to get an inside position on Sheed even though Sheed is much taller than him. If the ball gets to Oakley, he could hit a mid-range jumper while Mason could put the ball on the floor and use his body and strength against smaller defenders or his quickness and wits against a bigger defender.
When the ball is not going down low to Shaq, or my team is forced to attack from the perimeter, I can rely on Westbrook’s penetration where he can get past his man, draw contact or go all the way to the rim, or pass out to the shooters. Grant Hill is also an excellent creator and will be my secondary ball-handler.

I will use Brandon Roy as a spot-up shooter at times, but he will also be always on the floor whenever Shaq is resting. Basically I want to have either Shaq or Roy on the floor. I will try to rest Shaq and Westbrook simultaneously, so that Roy plays with Conley in the back-court. Conley will play a lot off-ball and move to the corner for a spot-up 3. Toni Kukoc is another excellent shooter and can create off the dribble so he can help Brandon Roy keep the defense guessing. Kukoc will be the secondary shot-creator in such situations.

Grant Hill will be my primary defender for Durant. Hill can keep up with Durant and will not tire quickly. If I have to, I’m content with limiting Grant Hill’s role offensively to play mostly off-ball, cut along the baseline and not exert too much energy on this end so that he has the energy to defend against Durant. Paul George will be the secondary defender for Durant but I can also throw in some Anthony Mason at the 3, just to try and bother Durant a bit more. It also helps that this boosts my rebounding even more. I expect Durant, Joe Johnson and Penny to be put in a lot of pick-and-rolls and will try to switch everything on the pick-and-rolls as I respect their shooting a lot. I think I have enough length at all perimeter positions to be able to bother their shots.

Actually, I have the option to play George extended minutes on Durant on a given night if he has the better matchup. Hill can always guard the other perimeter player (2-guard), or I could go for the kill with a better offensive combo in George and Roy.

I want my team to be defensive-minded and very tough on that end of the floor. That’s why I have Oakley and Mason playing all 48 minutes at the 4. They will be my defensive leaders. They are very vocal on defense and will dictate the mindset for the entire team. Shaq is without a doubt the paint and rim protector but it helps that I have two all-NBA defenders next to him to set the tone. On the perimeter Grant Hill, Paul George and Mike Conley are excellent defenders and Brandon Roy, Westbrook and Toni Kukoc can also play the passing lanes and create turnovers. I imagine a Westbrook/Conley-Hill/Kukoc-Roy/George fastbreak will be a nightmare and an automatic score. I will also play sometimes Anthony Mason at the 3 for even more toughness against Durant. Mason played several seasons at the 3 and I expect him to make my defense even more stingy. I am not worried about my spacing on the other end with Mason at the 3 as he was a good creator off the dribble, could move well without the ball, and was a very good passer and will likely be a mismatch for whoever is guarding him.
In end-of-game situations I could go offensively with 4 perimeter players and Shaq, as all 4 are a threat to score – Conley, Roy, Kukoc, George. Defensively I can sub in Oakley and even Mason or Grant Hill (depending on the opposition) for Kukoc and Roy. I could also use Westbrook even though if I wanna run a set play, he may be benched for Conley.
I wanna focus specifically on my selection of Gheorghe Muresan. I don’t want the other team to rest even for the limited time that Shaq is on the bench so I got a guy who is even bigger than Shaq. On the other hand, I don’t wanna take minutes away from Shaq so I couldn’t accommodate a center like Daugherty (who was available) because he would have to play around 12 minutes.

Muresan will definitely be a factor defensively with his 7-7 height and block or alter a lot of shots. I don’t worry about racking up fouls as he is not expected to play more than 15 minutes at most (could play a lot less if I decide to play Shaq 40+ minutes). Offensively, Muresan will be even more of a nightmare. He was very mobile for such a big man and you could literally not prevent him from scoring. He led the league in FG% 2 straight seasons (was 2nd in EFG% in both seasons) and did it while playing against the most stacked center position with legitimate 7-footers like Shaq, Hakeem, Robinson, Ewing, Mutombo, Mourning, Smits, Daugherty, etc. playing against him. I trust Muresan to score whenever he gets the ball against whoever is guarding him. Noah is an excellent pick-and-roll defender but he will be overmatched by Muresan and if Muresan doesn’t put the ball on the floor, Noah can’t bother his shot. Muresan was also a relatively good FT% which is also a good thing for me. It’s not like I will run my entire offense around him so it helps that he can finish whenever his number is called. By the way, he was a very good rebounder and in limited minutes I expect him to use his length to rebound the ball. He will be particularly useful to get offensive rebounds and putbacks which was something he did very often.

As a whole, I expect to have an advantage in rebounds and I want to focus on that a lot. Obviously O_6 has great offensive players so I wanna keep them to 1 shot every possession. Oakley and Mason may be undersized but were better rebounders than Sheed and McDyess, and were excellent when it came to boxing out. Shaq was also a better rebounder than Ewing. I want to get some offensive rebounds as well. This is where Oakley will be very useful. It also helps that among my perimeter players I have guys who have a knack for rebounding, particularly Grant Hill and Westbrook.

I will also try to use Mike Conley as a pest who pressures the opposing PG full-court and that’s why I am not getting him more minutes. I want him to shorten the shot-clock for them, possibly get some steals. I will have him almost exclusively off-ball offensively so he will not be worn out too quickly. But in end-game situations I will also rely on him as he is an excellent spot-up shooter and has an underrated knack of getting past his man 1-on-1 and scoring.
For now I will not comment on my opponent’s team as I do not know his strategy or how he will use most players. I only assumed that Durant and Ewing will play key roles and I focused a lot on them; I will respond when I find out how he utilizes the rest of his players.

Good stuff batmana...

These are my starters and the minutes I will play them during this series...

Ewing (35) -- Noah (9) -- Rasheed (4)
Rasheed (23) -- McDyess (17) -- Noah (8)... Durant will get some stretch 4 looks if batmana goes small
Durant (35) -- Joe J. (13)
Battier (23) -- DJ (16) -- Joe Johnson (9)
Penny (32) -- Brandon (10) -- DJ (6)

Defensive Matchups
- Ewing/Sheed/Noah will take turns guarding Shaq, I will use a lot of double teams on Shaq
- The big not defending Shaq will guard Mason or Oakley
- Battier will guard Roy, and Durant will guard Hill at the start... Battier will switch to whoever is hotter
- Penny will guard Westbrook at the start, DJ will come in for Battier if WB needs to be slowed down
- DJ is capable of guarding 1-3, he will usually be guarding Hill or Westbrook when he is in the game
- Joe Johnson will likely be paired with Battier or DJ, so he can guard the "weaker" wing when he is in
- I will make Oakley/Mason kill me with their mid-range shot and double Shaq with Sheed/Ewing often
- Poor spacing of batmana's offense makes my defensive length a problem for them
- Sheed/Ewing is a great interior defensive presence who can force batmana's wings to shoot jumpers
- DJ or Battier will be on the floor for almost all 48 mins, giving me a dynamic wing defender all game

Offensive Strategy
- Durant will be my #1 option, Ewing #2, and Penny my #3 option but primary ball-handler
- Rasheed (1.2 3s made on .351 3P%) and Battier (1.5 3s made on .398 3P%) give me two unreal 3nD guys
- Sheed's presence will force Shaq to defend Ewing all the time whereas Ewing doesn't always guard Shaq
- Ewing will have a ton of space to operate against Shaq 1 on 1, he could get Shaq in foul trouble
- Sheed's shooting will take Oakley/Mason out of their comfort zones on D and open up the PnR game
- Penny/Ewing will do Pick-n-Pop stuff against Shaq, deadly with Battier/Durant/Sheed outside
- Penny will have more space to post-up with Sheed drawing Oak/Mase out of the paint
- Battier will be a low usage 3pt shooter
- DJ can be a ball-handler at times, and he will also come off screens in the mid-range and also cut
- Joe J. will be my primary bench scorer, 20/5/5 guys with strong 3pt shooting and passing skills are rare
- Joe J. will play when Durant is on the bench to give me an offensive boost
- McDyess will provide a scoring punch for the frontcourt if Ewing is out of the game or struggling
- Noah will be a #4/5 option on offense who focuses on making open shots, rebounding, and passing
- Brandon will be a backup PG who runs the team in the half court set and can shoot from outside
- My team has the athletes to run, but will play at a slower pace and take advantage in the HCO

Offensive Comparison
My opponent has a lot of talented offensive players, but I believe that his team is less than the sum of their parts offensively while mine fits together better. Both of us have built our teams around a PG/SF/C combo on offense. But I believe my trio fits together much better offensively.

Shaq -- Ewing
Hill -- Durant
Westbrook -- Penny

Shaq is obviously a better scorer than Ewing, I will not debate that. But I think people underrate how good of an offensive player '90-'92 Ewing was before his knees really started sucking his athleticism away.

Player A: 26.4 PPG -- .575 TS% -- 112 ORtg
Player B: 28.6 PPG -- .580 TS% -- 115 ORtg
Player C: 27.0 PPG -- .568 TS% -- 111 ORtg

Those 3 players are Hakeem ('93-'95), Ewing ('90-'92), and Shaq ('00-'02), the years being used for those players in this project. A is Ewing, B is Shaq, and C is Hakeem. Now I am not saying that Ewing is on the same level as Hakeem or Shaq as an offensive player for this project, but I think people don't appreciate what an offensive force he was in his time because he wasn't quite Shaq/Hakeem or even Robinson on Offense. He may not have quite been on that legendary level as an offensive player, but he was pretty damn close before his knees went to hell.

Batmana has chosen to surround Shaq with Hill/Westbrook, two mediocre outside shooters (Hill isn't even a 3pt threat) who are both at their best with the ball in their hands. Westbrook is a ball-dominant scoring PG while Hill is ball-dominant point forward. My opponent has already said that Hill will have a more limited off-ball role offensively on his team, which to me makes Hill a waste of a 2nd round pick because you aren't maximizing his skillset with a PG like Westbrook. Westbrook/Shaq could also have potential issues on offense because of Westbrook's tendency to chuck and be more of a scorer than a true PG.

I've surrounded Ewing with a guy who is a Top 3 scorer in this project, Kevin Durant. And unlike the two guys I'd rank ahead of him (MJ and Kobe), Durant is a dominant 3pt shooter who can play off-ball and kill teams. I don't think there is a better scorer to pair up with one of the elite 2-way Centers than Kevin Durant. Durant's ability to dominate the game offensively off the ball + his ridiculous perimeter shooting is a huge contrast to Grant Hill. Durant's style also allows me to draft a ball-dominant PG like Westbrook who he has been playing with in OKC. Penny isn't quite as explosive as Westbrook, but he is a far superior Half-Court PG with a much more refined offensive game.

Penny (.581 TS%) + Durant (.633 TS%) = great fit between 2 high efficiency scorers + Ewing
Westbrook (.536 TS%) + Hill (.537 TS%) = poor fit between 2 low efficiency scorers + Shaq

Brandon Roy and Paul George will help because both are good 3pt shooters. But Roy is another guy who was at his best with the ball in his hands. He wasn't as ball dominant as Westbrook or Hill, but he was a great creator off the dribble who was a "Kobe light" type of player. Great player but again maybe not the best fit next to guys like Westbrook and Hill who thrive with the ball in their hands. George in 2014 is a great player, but the 3 year aspect of this project hurts him. Kukoc and Mason are both interesting offensive players as well, but their offense won't be difference makers in this series imo.

80-80 game in the 4th quarter, 8 mins left, season on the line... whose offense do you really trust more down the stretch?

Batmana has the great Shaquille O'Neal, super tough rebounding goons inside, and really athletic wings. I think he drafted a strong team. But I also think my superior HCO, excellent floor spacing, interior defenders, and general 2-way interior versatility makes my team more complete and deserving of a series win.

I think Batmana has the more talented team with superior rebounding. I need to hear the matchups though because both teams have starters who can be exploited pretty badly by the other team.

I think that's actually one of the more one-sided matchups. No disrespect to batmana, but I think 0_6s team is clearly better, both in terms of talent and fit. Obviously batmana has prime Shaq, who's at worst a top 5 player in this project, but prime Ewing would hold his own against him, and O_6 has 3 of the top 4 players in this matchup - Durant is more or less on the same level as Ewing, and Penny, while worse than both, was still amazing at his peak. Ewing/Rasheed duo inside (and outside, considering their skillsets) would be deadly on both ends of the court.

The thing I don't like about batmana's team is that he doesn't really have good three point shooting, and that's very important when you have Shaq inside. With the lineup that he wants to put out there on the floor, Brandon Roy is the only dangerous 3 point threat. Shaq could really use some shooters around him because of his ability to find them with great passes from the low post.

The only concern with O_6s team is whether guys like Brandon and McDyess would accept coming off the bench at this stage of their careers, but otherwise, I think he's one of the top contenders to win this tournament. Terrific team.

Edited my post above to give my gameplan. Right below batmana's gameplan so it's easier for judges to compare and contrast. I can't wait to read the opinions of other posters here on this matchup.

Oh, and I think we're in the same boat O_6...I mean that we're going against two dominant centers of the 3-point era (Shaq and Hakeem), while we have two great, but not THAT great centers on our teams (Ewing and Alonzo). We're clearly the underdog in this regard, but I think our guys could really hold their own against their legendary counterparts. I'd really HATE it if the judges would give all the credit to our opponents for that and they win as a result of just that, even though I feel like our teams are more talented overall. Good luck dude. :)

Yea, I thought my team was similar to yours. Mourning/Kobe and Ewing/Durant, with a very good PG bringing it together. Obviously our teams aren't as similar beyond those 3 pieces but those early picks do help form the identity of your team.

I also noticed the same thing about Ewing vs. Shaq and Zo vs. Hakeem. Ewing, Zo, and Dwight were the tail-end of the MVP caliber 2 way Center club, while Hakeem and Shaq were at the top. But just having a guy like Ewing or Zo will atleast give us a chance against those two beasts.

I think Batmana has this. Oakley would break Sheed mentally. I think DJ could do the same to Westbrook but you only have him playing 6 minutes at PG. Also having 3 different guys runnign the point is highly questionable IMO

I like O_6's team here too. If batmana's rotation was different, I could be swayed to pick differently. I don't think I'd play Muresan and Mason at all since I don't care for these 2...well I'd give them spot minutes. Oakley would be off the bench and Kukoc starts. Oakley would see a ton of minutes in an 8 man rotation. I can live with the 3 ball handlers since Shaq is the main focus anyways. Maybe send Mason and Oakley in there to take out Durant; I don't mean start a fight...but give some really hard fouls and risk that flagrant. Being physical is key here.

Just because he only plays 6 mins at the PG position doesn't mean he would only guard Westbrook for 6 mins. I consider Penny to be the PG and DJ the SG in a Penny/DJ backcourt, but DJ would be the one covering Westbrook the majority of the time. DJ could guard 1-3 so I will even have him on Hill at times, a SF.

When DJ plays the "PG" position for those handful of mins, he'll probably be playing with Joe Johnson as the other guard in the lineup. Joe Johnson is just as likely to initiate the offense as DJ in that scenario, both being combo guards.

Penny/DJ/JJ/Brandon will all play a role of "PG" at some point for my team based on the lineups, but the majority of the time (like 90%) it will be Penny or Brandon initiating the offense and running the team. But sometimes I will go with a DJ/JJ/Durant backcourt where DJ would technically be the PG.

You talk like Sheed never played against Oakley. In 12 games he went 16/6/1/1 49% to Oakley's 9/8/3/0 37%.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

O6's Top3 is one of the best trios in this competition, and he added some solid players (some of them I glady would have used... ). It will be interesting to see whether a correalation between draft position and team success would be found eventually... As a #6 seed, my impression was that life was really hard in the 2-4th rounds. That "bonus" "B" sequence in the crucial 3rd round was hard to bear. :D Let's wait and see...
Batmana of course has Shaq. And I like his choices of Hill-George-Westbrook. Although it has to be said that in 2012 George hadn't "arrived" yet, so it's a somewhat weaker version of him. Hill is one of my favorite players, i had slight hopes of landing him in the 3rd round... obviously it didn't happen. I like the Westbrook-Penny parallel (- they happen to battle eachother, by the way. :D ) All in all, Batmana surrounded Shaq with some dynamic perimeter players, I like this core. It's totally subjective, but I'm not a fan of his later choices (especially Mason and Muresan)... but it could work, his explanation is VERY convincing.

As for the feel of the matchup... I can't decide which team is the favorite. I smell a 7-game series here. Or translating it to judges' votes - a split decision. I'm curious...
PC Board All Time Fantasy Draft:
