Pistons Determined to Keep Monroe - Trade Smith

Post#1 » by Natopher » Wed Feb 5, 2014 3:06 am

I just found this article that says that the Pistons are determined to keep Monroe and could trade Smith to one of Boston or Phoenix. Now, I know this is from the Latino Post, BUT it does give us hope! :D

It's just different bloggers writing about the same quote we heard a few weeks ago. Hopefully it happens but I would not be willing to give up assets to get rid of him. Our dumb ass GM already gave up a first to sign him. Something like Smith for Eric Gordon would be lovely.

As much as i love the idea of keeping Monroe and trading Smith, do we need another smith/monroe based thread??
Sorry to be a kill joy...

As much as I'd love for it to be true, it isn't.

Teams will want assets to take Smith, or they'll want to lose contracts that are just as bad.

Smith has been an absolute trainwreck. The absolute worst of the flaws that he's always had have been on full display. A fuller display than they've ever been on.

Teams have been treated to an absolute and perfect reminder of why they didn't particularly want him on their team before, and now he comes with a major 4 year financial commitment.

If he ever gets traded, it will be for a longer contract later in the run of his own contract. Its not happening this year or next.

Live with it. :(

This is a complete non-story. It's all based on Feldman's opinion piece that was picked up by ESPN:

Let's go Latino Post! Prove to be the breaker of all news related to basketball

Green and Bass for Smith works. Its pretty much what the majority of us wanted this off season anyways.

I could see Boston do it (for Green)

Just like others said, I could see the Celtics doing a trade involving Jeff Green for Smith. But honestly, I think Dumars will add another piece before the deadline and continue to run with Smith as our starting 3.

I'd love to know what Gores and Dumars talk about, and what Gores and his henchmen talk about. Gores decided to spend 52 millions dollars on a contract for Smith. He is rich, but not so rich that he doesn't know how a $52 million dollar investment is doing.

I agree - keep Monroe, trade Smith, even if it is mostly for expirings and then start over. I think Jennings is salvageable. And then just focus our off season on getting a really good (and young) SF. Then we'd have a young core starting 5. We might need a better coach to take them to the next level.

^I wonder the same thing sometimes, for all we know Gores and co. could have been the ones who wanted Smith and Dumars was just following orders. I know his recent track record says otherwise, but I still find it hard to believe Joe was dumb enough to think Smith was a good idea.

I don't think I'd downgrade from Smith to Wallace just to shave a year off. There's got to be a better way.

But I'd jump at Okafor - that's a reset button I hit in a heartbeat.

Smith to Detroit has been a constant rumor since 2008. It is obvious its more Dumars than Gores.

Even our beatwriters are getting on board. From the FreePress

It’s good that Smith is taking responsibility, but when you factor in his stubbornness in taking three-pointers, it’s fair to say the Pistons are expecting better decision-making from him.

So it isn’t surprising to see reports that the Pistons are interested in moving Smith — especially when there isn’t a lot of interest in trading Greg Monroe. But Smith’s four years and $54 million owed will be tough to move, with the trade deadline just over two weeks away.

Smith will be tough to move, but we won't have to give up assets to move him. We aren't interested intrading Greg. Greg & Drummond are likely the future of this franchise. We need to look to improve the 1-2-3.

Smith for a bag of chips will be addition by subtraction.

Another team may want him as their long-term PF, I hope.

NYK's
Lakers
Boston
Atlanta
Houston
Phoenix
Washington
Brooklyn?
Charlotte?
Toronto?

If Wallace is a worst case scenario it isn't too bad. Because he has very little market value himself you likely won't have to give up any other assets to do the deal. Plus the 3 years left on Josh becomes 2 for Wallace, so you live with him for 1 year and buy him out or trade him as an expiring before the final year.

The big question is if the team would function better without Josh at all. Is it addition by subtraction just due to fit and roles and attitude? If so it doesn't matter what you get back, just don't give away extras to move him.

All those teams are feasible but i feel NYK, Houston, PHX are our real chances to courier the brick surplus.

Im resigned to the fact we will have to give up an asset or work a mega 3 or 4 team trade to relieve us of not so smoove.

I would love a 1st and Okafor for Josh since PHX has a lot of draft picks anyways. Heck, we could even give them someone else too.

McDonough isn't going to trade for Josh Smith. He's way too smart for that. Either will Houston. Our only hope in they NYK. They need to win now and Smith would be a killer fit beside Chandler, while having Melo being the #1 scoring option and allowing Smith to focus on doing everything else.

Smith for Bargnani works straight up.
