Russell Wilson is the 2nd African American QB.....

Post#1 » by Little Italia » Tue Feb 4, 2014 9:03 pm

To win a Superbowl, right? Why is no one talking about this? I thought they would make a big deal about this, especially considering Donovan McNabb was being talked about as being the next Black QB to win a Superbowl in his playing days.

Why? That's simple. The great Peyton Manning was being discussed. That's why. Now all of the ESPN shows are explaining and giving excuses why Peyton Manning lost and what it means to his legacy etc... So that takes up a lot of time too. And mostly the "BRUTHA" analysts are calling out Manning and saying he was embarrassed or a straight up failure. And for that, and also due to Manning being a class guy, the BRUTHAS are being called insensitive.

Im happy for Wilson because hes not really representative of the "black" segment of society. But rather the "short people" segment of society. Hes been called a failure all of his life, not because of his color, but because he is 5 foot nothin.

Let's be honest, any of us could have won the Super Bowl quarterbacking that team on that night. They were on point and everything was rolling their way.

i beg to differ. Wilson had a great game. He may not be a great QB, but he did did his job.

Perhaps it's because it's 2014? I never even thought about it until I read this thread. I'd to think at this point it doesn't matter.

i think the biggest taboo he broke is the idea scrambling qbs can't win the super bowl, there were people saying that even when kaep was 7 yards away from winning last year.

Steve Young was a scrambler. So are Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger.. There is nothing wrong with being a scrambling QB. Russ Wilson is a scrambler but he's a pass first QB who developed in college in a pro passing system.

These posts are exactly correct. Over the last two seasons when Seahawks fans have discussed Russell Wilson nobody I know of has mentioned his race. They have talked about his height, athleticism, intelligence, hard work, passing ability, leadership and scrambling ability but not his race. Nobody cared about his race because his skin color was unimportant

not an apt comparison, there is a difference between ability to be evasive under pressure and having run plays called for you. roethlisberger and rodgers never came close to having 500 yards rushing and even young wasn't looking to run as much as he used to in his super bowl season. in fact wilson is the first qb to rush for over 500 yards and win a super bowl in the same season.

Russell is an elite QB. We in Seattle knew that awhile ago. This guy was putting up 40-50 points a game at the end of his first season. He does what he's asked to do, and at the top of the list is not turn the ball over, force plays, make unnecessary mistakes when the Hawks have such a great D and strong running game. You can't fault or penalize him for that. He's a bit restrained by a system that puts winning first over QB stats. And I'm sure he's fine with that, just fine with winning, especially a Super Bowl.

He's got one of the stronger arms in the league, bigger hands than Manning, very strong, highly intelligent, great leader, extremely coachable, incredibly evasive, great improvisor, cool and even temperament, real clutch, total winner, tireless worker at improving his game, impeccable character, upstanding citizen, very personable and well liked...what more could one want in their QB other than a few more inches in height? I feel quite confident that he's going to win more Super Bowls than Peyton Manning, and pretty confident that's he's going to win more than Peyton's brother Eli, barring injury.

I think Wilson, a bit like Obama, seems to transcend his race in some ways. It's easy to see him in a color-blind way. Just is.

Lets pump the brakes on the elite QB talk. He had a good super bowl and a solid season, but that defense is what makes that Seahawks team go.

RG3
Russell Wilson
Cam Newton
Colin Kaep
Jason Campbell
Geno Smith
Terrell Pryor
all starters.

i think the public has gotten used to the black QB.

I'm black, i noticed and ill point out most things racial...and i didn't think it was that big of a deal.
plus what ATL 5 said...that defense was awesome.

Given all QB's in the league, how many would you choose over Russell Wilson (25) taking into account age? I wouldn't take any of these simply based upon age, but I certainly acknowledge their elite status:

--Peyton Manning (37)
--Tom Brady (36)
--Brees (35)

The only other QB's I'd consider taking over Wilson now would be:

--Aaron Rodgers (30)
--Andrew Luck (24)

Best of the rest who I wouldn't choose over Wilson for a combination of various different reasons:

--Ben Roethlisberger (30)
--Phillip Rivers (32)
--Matt Ryan (28)
--Eli Manning (33)
--Joe Flacco (29)
--Matt Stafford (26)
--Colin Kaepernick (26)
--Cam Newton (24)

Yeah, I'd put Russell Wilson near the bottom of the 7-8 elite QB's, at worst considering him just outside that class, but rising. And again, there's only two QB's I'd consider choosing over him now considering strictly age as a factor. John Clayton, for one, actually ranks him just a tad higher than I do.

It's a matter of opinion to a certain degree.

Wilson didn't break a race barrier he broke the height barrier...he went low cause of his height and how scouts like their qb at 6 2".....the scouts and gm who needed a qb and passed on him should be fired for their discriminatory behavior

Woah.

Eli Manning is better than Russell Wilson.
that should not be up for discussion.

Eli Manning is one of the strangest QB's out there when it comes to the discussion of ranking him amongst the best. First off, he's won two Super Bowls. That's impressive. He's come up big in big game situations. The thing about Eli is that he can be really, really good, or really average, or even really bad sometimes. I think he threw 4 interceptions against the Hawks this year and got shutout by them at home. Then he'll turn around and have big game against someone else.

Inconsistency has always been Eli's bugaboo, and this has always made it hard as to where to rank him amongst the best. He's kind of an enigma in that way, more so than any other of the elite, or near elite QB's that I can think of. At least to me, and I don't think I'm alone in this.

Man I really like Russell Wilson. Extremely Happy for the seahawks and especially him to tell everyone that said he couldn't do it, that he did it. But there are tons of variables out there that you do not know about. Caught up in the euphoria, yeah, hes the greatest thing since sliced bread. And man that was an awesome parade by the way.

But you cannot call him elite at this point. Why? THE NFL CAN FIGURE THINGS OUT QUICK. And if given time, defenses can gameplan around an attack to box him in and get at his weaknesses. Manning was shredded to pieces. Brady. Eventually teams attain more game film and film study, and will figure it out. Secondly, when you've got a chip on your shoulder, its different, when you are now the hunted. I believe he has a lot of gas in the tank and can win more. But right now at this juncture, one weakness of the Seahawks is the offensive line. And that will play a big role in the status of the QB.
