Why shouldn't the child of a wealthy person share in the good fortune of his parent? Just because the rich daddy was dumb enough to stick it in a stripper doesn't mean the kid should have to live at the stripper's level of income. The system is set up so that the kid benefits from being a product of his father or mother's wealth. Yes, the mother gets brought up as well for being nothing more than a one night stand or even preying on a rich target. You can't punish an innocent child for his/her mother being a scumbag. Unfortunately there is no way for the court to force the mother to spend every penny on the child and there is rampant abuse by mothers who receive child support, but there is no way to fix the problem without harming the child.

How does the proposed (or some version thereof) actually hurt the child though? You can cap child support payments at a reasonable amount and direct the rest to a trust fund.

*EDIT* Hmm, after doing a quick search, it seems the support payments aren't actually that crazy - around $3K-to-$5K/month for some famous athletes. I understand that can add up after 18 years, but hardly enough for someone to retire comfortably on while raising a kid. Girl shoulda taken the $1 mil.

This is true. In these cases they should limit the amount of money passing through the mother's hands to twice the equivelent of minimum wage or something, then put the excess in a trust for the child. Its child support, the mother's shouldn't live like queens with their kids' money.

While you are right in that pretty much all of family law is biased towards the female, there really isn't much that can be done without the kid ending up getting hurt

TL/DR the court thinks it is not fair for a baby daddy to live large while his kid lives in poverty so they do what they can to raise the kid out of poverty. It is what it is, people need to be smarter where they put their dick.

What I specifically said was cap child support to twice minimum wage. Annually that is roughly $30k....which, btw, is more than enough to raise a child. Again, this money isn't intended to make the mother rich, its intended to provide for the child. Let's say that was a little too stingy and double it. Now that child has $60k for living expenses. No one can make a logical argument suggesting that isn't enough to raise a child.

Keep in mind, I'm not letting the dad off the hook. If today they'd be paying $2M per year, they still pay $2M per year. It just goes into a trust that the mother can't touch. The kid will have plenty of support growing up, as well as a share of their father's wealth when they grow up.

The biggest problem for the kids is that child support stops at 18. Half the time dad is retired and broke himself, if stripper-mom burned through that cash upgrading her own lifestyle the kid steps out into the world with nothing.
