Sefko: I get the sense Mavericks have made inquiries about Lakers' Pau Gasol
The Dallas Morning News

Question: With Dirk playing so great, what Mavs should do going into the playoff. Some people say to wait until summer to find a star who can play with Dirk. But one thing to remember, this is sport,Dirk might not be that great next year as he is getting older or there are also injuries to consider for any player. So I think that the Mavs are in need of a star to validate current Dirk's play.Mostly trading for a SF or Center will be great.

Eddie Sefko: I get the sense that the Mavericks have made at least cursory inquiries about how serious the Lakers are about jettisoning Gasol. Would it be worth shipping Shawn Marion's expiring deal and some young assets along with future second-rounders? You'd be left with Gasol playing center, Nowitzki at power forward, Crowder/Carter at small forward and the same backcourt the Mavericks have now. That's even a worse defensive team than they already have, although it's pretty impressive offensively. Could be interesting, although the Mavericks still would have to bump up their end of the deal to make the salaries match for trade purposes. It's a long shot, but sometimes long shots come in.

The more articles I read about Pau trades the more I start to hate myself for not being the guy coming up with them.

Looks like you don't even need sources or any type of merit whatsoever to write trade rumors now. I guess having a "sense" or a "feeling" is good enough to get people to fall into your trap.

I dont see a deal happening unless the mavericks overpay. The lakers would need to take back salary along with marions expiring which is only 9 million. So brandon wright and maybe shane larkin to match salaries alone. Not exactly a great return for pau imo.

A better deal for the lakers would be pau to the bobcats for ben gordon and ramon sessions(both expiring) and Portland's first round pick. They also have detroits pick but that would be unrealistic to expect them to add that.

can't it just be Gordon so we can have a higher tax savings? I'd be a lil greedy and ask for one of their 2nd picks too.

how bout their own pick? top 5 protected of course with Por pick and we send them Meeks, Blake and whatever else shooters they need? And we'll eat a few bad contracts that they have.

Their own pick is likely going to chicago this year if they make the playoffs. Its top 10 protected this year, top 8 next year and unprotected after that.

yea you got to it before igot a chance to revise...I like the thought though but if it can just be done with Gordon/1st/2nd I'd take it. Lower end pick but so be it, the tax savings might allow mgmt. the abilitiy to purchase anothe pick and package the 2 lower pick for a higher lotto pick or something.
