Magic Wants To Help

Earvin "Magic" Johnson said Wednesday that he's willing to do whatever he can to turn the Lakers into a championship-caliber team, including doing some grassroots recruiting.

"I've done that in the past," Johnson told the Los Angeles Times. "I told [General Manager] Mitch Kupchak that last week. First they have to make up their mind on who they want, and then they tell me, just like I recruited Ron Artest, I talked to Lamar Odom."

Recruited Artest? Uhhh Artest went up to Kobe after game 6 of the 08 Finals in the locker room and told him he was coming to the Lakers in the next couple of years.

Magic isn't a GM.

Arguably the greatest Laker ever that helped build this empire wants to help recruit free agents. I'm actually all for it

i don't think it would be a good idea for magic to be involved in anything the lakers do. he's run his mouth too much.

Wish I could disagree...
I think at this point, he'd be a huge distraction considering MDA is still the coach and Jim the owner.

This reads more like Magic trying to portray himself as the white knight here to save the Lakers in the media...

If he wanted to help, couldn't he just help? I don't see the need to broadcast it to the world...

I'm sure he will once the season starts.

Anyway, I'm not against this at all. I'm sure interacting with Magic would provide players with motivation to play in LA since being a Laker doesn't seem to interest too many stars these days.

Supposedly Laker fans bashing Magic about wanting to help the franchise... Man what kinda times are we living in? Put Magic in the room with a potential free agent signing and I bet they'd at least listen. The guy is a PRESENCE.... Something we're clearly lacking since Dr. Buss and Jerry West are both gone

Just a week ago he was bashing the team and was talking about how dysfunctional the team is right now lmao. Very interesting ways of attracting free agents, Magic.

He recruited Lamar? I didn't realize players needed recruiting when they are traded for. Keep doing you Magic.

He probably means he talked to Lamar when he became a free agent back in 09. Damn that was so long ago. I remember being ecstatic when we resigned Lamar.

If Magic wants to help he could start with Kevin Love.

He told the damn truth about the franchise. Jim Buss isn't making moves with his head but with his pride. MDA even tho he's grown on me he's isn't a bad coach.

Magic just told the truth, if you don't like the truth then you'll be disappointed all your life fam

Again... Truth implies proof.
Show me proof that anything Jim Buss has done was done by only him, and then that anything he has done was done with anything but the best interests of this franchise in mind.
Even if he has made mistakes, so does Mitch, West, Lester, and so did Dr Buss...
Show me the proof in what Magic says and this pervasive diatribe against Jim Buss in the media, and maybe I'll start to worry about this franchise... In the meantime, I'm going to relax, enjoy the ride, and know with all reasonable certainty that within the next handful of seasons, the Lakers are going to be back on top.

Otherwise, Jim Buss is just a too easy target for those that want to see the Most Dominant Franchise in the NBA over the last 30 years, look bad.

Magic can help by shutting the F up! Even if he is spouting crap, doing it at any opportunity on national TV does no good for the franchise or any of the free agents he's trying to recruit for us.

So what are you doing?

I mean every time anything comes up about Magic your the first one to criticize him and throw him under the bus. Like I said earlier I never saw the day coming that Laker fans would throw Magic under the bus. Howard was a #@#!! Yet you were one of the most outspoken posters on here supporting him before he even got here. Infact even though I waasnt posting on here, yet at the time I would stop by here and read your posts on here when you were defending him.

You fail to realize Magic is a business man. Ya maybe he was supportive of Jim and Mitch when they signed Nash but as time went on Magic simply addressed Nash signing as a failure and waste of all the picks we gave up on him so what he said earlier about the ownership and F.O was and is true since he is looking at it in a business perspective and he is absolutely correct.

Now as far as his comment about MDA is he wrong? Again your the most outspoken poster on here supporting MDA and your blaming injuries for our failures which I agree THIS SEASON but whos to say if Jim would've hired Phil instead of MDA that Howard would've stayed. Whos to say that Kobes injury would have happened if MDA wouldn't have drivin Kobe down to the ground. Howard is gone and Im glad and if you recall I was never a fan of his. But I promise you if Phil was in LA Howard would've stayed. MDA sucks and we all know that, well everyone except you, he failed in Phoenix he failed in N.Y and he is failing in LA miserably. Blame it on injuries if you like but for the most part we had a decent team last year and we got knocked out in the first round Kobe got injured and Howard left. Who do you blame?

Like I said Magic is a business man and he looks at everything as a business. Yet he is a legend that has put his heart and soul and if it wasn't because of his virus he probably would've played he heart out for this organization until his body wouldn't allow him. Yet you and other peps are sitting here bashing him or criticizing him for his displeasure about our crappy decisions this franchise has made that basically is being made by Jim Buss for hiring MDA and blowing all of our picks on a HAS BEEN point guard that should've never been signed from the beginning and we are paying the price for all those mistakes.

By the way I have learned in my life. When someone puts his hand out and offers to help you, you take that offer and you appreciate the fact that he is willing to take his time and energy to help you. I mean lets be honest here we are talking about MAGIC JOHNSON here. Who else is offering to help this broken down and mess that our F.O has gotten us into?? WHO??

If its up to you, you probably want to pull down Magic jersey and burn it in the middle of the Staple center because everything he called out the F.O is basically everything you have been supporting on this board. That's why you hate the guy so much.

Me, personally Ill take any help that Magic has to offer as long as the final decision goes through Mitch, Jim and Jeannie since I think Magic success, his dedication and history proves HE IS A LAKER!! He might suck as an sports analyst but when it comes to business decisions he is a wise man and good business man and he is the face of the LAKERS. Always has and always will be.

But then again that's just me!!

Bynum for starters. Didn't Kobe threaten the Lakers that he wants Bynum gone for a better supporting cast? Yet Jim was the one who was so high and mighty about Bynum being the next Shaq and he is going to be the future of this franchise?
Phil Jackson next.
Wasn't Phil suppose to come out of retirement and coach the Lakers, when Jim pulled the plug on him and hired MDA because he never liked Phil??
I mean lets be honest here, two of the major issues that were drivin by Jim and his stubbornness has ended up to back fire in our face.

Come Kilroy!!

Nobody is saying that all the blame goes to Jim, but like anything in this world it begins with the leadership and ends with the leadership. We all know that.
