Remember when HOU fans wanted Millsap and picks for Asik?

Post#1 » by parson » Sat Feb 8, 2014 3:16 am

Read this thread from the HOU board: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1302500&start=15

Heh, heh, heh.

Thing is, I'd hate to give away Korver and Brand, especially Korver. Amazing how things change, huh? I think I can see how those 2 are helping mold our youngsters.

So, a return to the question: would you play Millsap at SF if we traded for Asik, assuming he will refuse to come unless we're starting him? Would you line up, next year, Asik/Horford/Millsap as our frontline? Would you bench Carroll? Would you try to give 'em each 36 min/game and sell it to the players that way?

Do we like Korver too much to trade him for Asik? Brand? Do we think the $15 million is too rich for our tastes?

Are we simply done with the Asik drama?

Personally, I'd offer a future lottery-protected 1st and Brand, Antic, Ayon and Cunningham. Let 'em cut the ones they don't have room for. We might even re-sign a couple, since they know the system.

I'm done with the Asik drama. That ship has sailed long, long ago.

I'd be open to trading for him. Asik would stabilize our starting lineup this year (perhaps precipitating a postseason run?!?) and give us a solid front-court rotation for next year. Horford, Asik AND Millsap would give us a rotation better than any other playoff team...

I'd trade Brand, but only if he wanted to go. (Yeah, I'd afford the vet that much respect.) I'd hate to lose Korver, though.

I've said it for a while but Asik pouting isn't a reason to start him over better players and certainly not a reason to force guys out of position for. he could start this season next to Sap and next season feel confident that even though he's coming off the bench that he can at least log significant minutes next to either of Horf or Sap given that their games compliment his as opposed to Noah and Dwight.

HOU fans were delusional, but they had some right to be. There was a year long run were they landed Harden and D12 and youngsters like Parsons and T Jones have looked good. There's also the hope that your trash will bring in some return but it generally doesn't happen.

The price were the Asik ship sailed: $15M. No one wants to pay that for a 1-dimensional guy that they can't market. The entire rationale that all that matters is his cap number was just foolishness. Fact is no owner wants to buy out HOU's folly... At least not unless they either get paid (in 1sts) to take the contract or they can get rid of an equally toxic contract.

I keep forgetting about that $15 million price tag.

He is a one-dimensional player, but there can be a role for bigs like that. Hell, most of our starting lineup is made of one-dimensional role players who we have molded our system around and adjusted our style towards

We are one of the worst rebounders in NBA. We need elite rebounder, a big sized center like Ömer Aşık. Korver perform well but his contract too long. If we trade Asik for Brand&Korver we will have a chance for make bold move for 2015 FA.

I'm not at all against getting Asik. Even if it means using Korver to get him. irfan is right. Even if he's not a Hawks fan... Our rebounding and rim defense needs a guy like Asik. Somebody who can protect the rim and possibly give us an advantage down low. Let's face the truth, Brand is not a huge loss for us. Korver is a great guy because of the streak but night for night for the next 4 years, I don't know if he will deliver more than a couple of threes here and there. He doesn't improve our defense by much. The problem with Asik is his balloon contract and his possible knee issue. I don't know if he has a real knee issue, but that is something that should be negotiated too. If he is damaged goods, then we don't take him... period.

So, going forward, here's my two looks.

1. Trade for Asik not involving Sap or Horf.

or

2. Go after Gortat in the offseason.

Do y'all realize how much debt we're in? There is simply no way we'd take on Asik's contract without some severe incentive. And don't complain about our ownership here; apparently, no one else is willing to give up value for Asik either.

Also, at this point,I'd probably put Korver 2nd on my untouchable list - just behind Horford.

We're playing good basketball now - for the first time since, maybe, Lenny Wilkins. I believe our vets are a big reason for that, especially Korver and Horford. They've played on great teams and know what it takes. I like having a coach on the court.

Offer 'em Brand and Lou Williams.

He isn't even that good at protecting the rim. Brand is a better Rim protector than him. You don't pay 15 freaking million dollars for a rebounder who makes you worse on the offensive end.

Want to become a better rebounding team, throw something at Jersey for Reggie Evans who doesn't get any playing time there. Asik would be the highest paid player on the team towards the end of his contract.

Players like Omer impacts to game is not explain with stats, like Hibbert (i'm not say his at that level). He is play with full effort like an warrior at down low. This season is not a criterion. Off rebounds, screens he get anyway 10 ppg. It's enough for a elite defender. Remember his Bulls day, remember his 2012*13 season. If he play bad than not give him a contract end of 2015, that's it. It's a risk what we can take.

Too bad we can't turn back the clock on Brand, but, yeah, there's a lot more to protecting the rim than blocked shots.

I hate on Asik because I hate watching players bobble passes that would otherwise be easy points over and over again... but the dude is an elite rim protector and Brand doesn't deserve to even remotely be in the conversation when it comes to rim defense.

Uhm... What has Korver done to deserve untouchable status? Carry a streak? Please. Do you think for the remainder of his contract that he's going to get better or worse? I like having a three point threat, but I would rather win the rebound war on the defensive side and have somebody anchoring our defense. Moreover, three point threats are a dime a dozen. Gary Neal is available.
As far as Debt goes... Have you looked at our contracts?

Is this bad comparison week or something?

Kyle Korver: 12.5 PP36, .463 3PT%, .655 TS%
Gary Neal: 17.4 PP36, .373 3PT%, .485 TS%

Kyle Korver is a deadeye sharpshooter while Gary Neal is a relentless chucker.

Diesel, you gotta get off the koolaid man, or stop smoking whatever it is you smoking .

Korver I see as a Ray Allen, Smart IQ, great team guy, great shooter, great FT shooter, and as long as he can stay healthy, I dont see any drop off in his shooting. Hes a great asset to have because in the outer years he can become a bench role guy.

Millsap/Horford/Korver untouchable for Asik, im not convinced hes our "remedy". Id rather go after someone in the draft at this point. If Asik is willing to pout and throw away a season, i dont want that cancer on my team.

We need Basketball IQ guys, smart players
