Re: Rondo Trade Rumors & Ideas (update pg 8)
Only way Rondo ends up in NY barring signing as a free agent is for a third team to be involved. Knicks just don't have the assets and there's no way Danny's using Rondo for a salary dump.
Celts would have to get back good young players, picks and some cap relief.

The 3rd team is the concern to me. OKC is what I am thinking about. The could feel like they need to win now and so do they decide to cash in their young chips for Tyson Chandler and unloading Perks deal and arm the Knicks with enough ammo to come after Rondo.

Huh? OKC has nothing that the Celtics would take for Rondo, except perhaps Westbrook. There's no chance IMHO

OKC can't take on that kind of money, he's well over Perk's pay grade. Can't remember where but there was an article a couple days back saying how he'd slipped a fair amount the last year or so, and also speculated he was the one that was really not meshing with Woodson. I'll post it if I can find it.

You don't think Ainge would be tempted to swap Rondo for Reggie Jackson, Steve Adams, and Jeremy Lamb and a first round pick? Then it becomes why would OKC do it? But I could see them deciding to go for it all right and now and move their young players in a deal that returned them Chandler and a scorer especially if they could get future unprotected picks from the Knicks.

If OKC owners were willing to spend lavishly, I could see a 3 way trade happening that works for all 3 teams. The issue I see is Chandler is paid significantly more then Perkins and then OKC would be expected to give up their cheap talent which they are probably counting on to a certain extent at least.
Ainge might want someone like Lamb as part of the deal but I see OKC hesitant to give him since he is young and very cheap player who has shown very nice improvement this year.
I could see a third team involved but I just don't see it being OKC even though an upgrade from Perkins makes a lot of sense for them from a basketball perspective.

Like I said what I envision is OKC sending out Perkins and their young players and returning Chandler and Evan Turner something like that the money will be neutral. There is no real reason for OKC do this it was just a theory on how the Knicks could get into a trade that netted them Rondo.

Despite the consistent claims from Celtics general manager Danny Ainge that Rondo isn't available, the Knicks have a strong belief that he can be had if – in a nod to another show – the price is right. They can offer the likes of Amar'e Stoudemire (one season remaining after this one, at $23.4 million) while taking future money back (such as Gerald Wallace and/or Jeff Green) and helping Ainge clear the way for the summer of 2015 that is known to be a priority of his. (That summer is a major priority for the Knicks, too, but it appears the Rondo scenario is one of the few, if not the only, where they'd consider the impact of his addition great enough to justify taking on some money from that point on.) The Knicks can include Raymond Felton (a much cheaper point guard option) or Iman Shumpert (rookie contract) and even discuss beloved rookie Tim Hardaway Jr.
Honestly this is so shocking to me because I expect so much more from Sam Amick. He is one of the most respected national NBA writers. The fact that he wastes multiple paragraphs in his column about Rondo and how the Knicks want him is downright disgusting to me. Amick is way better than that.
"The Knicks can include Raymond Felton (a much cheaper point guard option)"
That line just kills me. Lets get a more accurate quote from an NBA executive about Raymond Felton:
“Felton is the worst starting point guard in the NBA,” one NBA executive, whose team recently played the Knicks, told SNY.tv. “I’d take 10 college point guards and about 30 NBA backups over him right now.”

But you are right Sam, he is a much cheaper option. Good point.

But you are right Sam, he is a much cheaper option. Good point.
I have no problem with Sam's article since I've gotten somewhat immune to the national media writing articles that favor big market teams like the Lakers and Knicks. He is writing it more from a Knicks perspective and just outlining in the ballpark of what the Knicks are currently prepared to offer.
The Knicks benefit from getting these articles out there since it shows Rondo or insert player X that they are interested and makes Rondo less likely to sign an extension before free agency hits. So even if NY knew that there is a zero % chance Rondo is traded before the trading deadline next year, why not get it into Rondo's mind that big market NY is interested.
NY has zero obligation to Rondo and can revoke their interest whenever they want.
Teams like the Lakers and Knicks can use the media to their advantage.

Re: Rondo Trade Rumors & Ideas (update pg 8)
People still neglecting how much leverage Rondo has here, especially if Boston is not willing to give him 4-5 max years in 2015, which he obviously wants, and can probably get. Not saying it will happen, but it would hardly be the first star to leave his team high and dry (see: LeBron, Howard, Paul, Melo, Bosh). Not going to get full value for him if that's the case, especially the closer he gets to unrestricted free agency. Because he can kill any decent trade simply by telling teams he will not resign with them (see: Paul, Melo).
Gun to Ainge's head, and faced with the alternatives of giving him 4/74m (or even 5/95m), letting him walk for nothing to a team like the Knicks or trading him for 70 cents on the dollar, he might just opt for the latter. Keep in mind that Ainge already knows how interested he is in breaking the bank for Rondo, and also already knows that Rondo is intent on hitting unrestricted free agency.
Just wouldn't sleep on it entirely, especially if the Knicks somehow get some first rounders to trade.

I have yet to read anything definitive on whether Rondo 'obviously' wants a max extension. People cast these aspersions based on a pretty shallow understanding of human nature, yet when it comes down to it a great majority of people willingly take less money than they could possibly earn for all kinds of reasons, like love, family, children, quality of life, or just the allure of the status quo.
But we do know a few things about Rondo:
1. last time he come up for renewal he took a below market deal.
2. when asked whether he wants star money he said he already makes star money.
3. he's a smart fellow and doesn't appear to be motivated by the same things most athletes are motivated by, meaning he can do the math and understand that the ramification of demanding the max is that the team who signs him to a deal like that will be disadvantaged when it comes to putting a competitive team around him.
We can all have our hunches on how this will turn out, but let's also admit that the time is not right to make a deal for either side. Ainge isn't going to trade Rondo until he gets a chance to see how he responds to a true leadership situation and how he takes to Brad's coaching, because those things will inform his value to the franchise and determine how high Ainge is willing to go to retain him. Ainge is also not going to trade him until he's healthy because once again those things impact his value, both to the team and around the league. Rondo, on the other hand, isn't going to commit to Boston until he sees what kinds of moves Danny's going to make to set up this team for contention in the near future. Both parties are in prove it to me mode and will be until the summer.
And can we quit it with this assumption that Ainge needs multiple first rounders to deal Rondo? He's denied that at every turn, as in I'm not trading a dollar for 4 quarters. The times he's been interested in dealing Rondo are when he can get back a comparable player. The Knicks don't have the pieces because they don't have a player comparable to Rondo.
Ainge has been pretty consistent on several points for almost a year now. There are in no special order:
1. the rebuild will be swift
2. we're building with Rondo
3. if we consider trading Rondo it'll be for a comparable player
4. I'm not going to make a deal just for the sake of making a deal
Ignore what he says at your own peril. I'm inclined to believe Ainge, I know he parses his words carefully but he doesn't lie he's just vague. He doesn't want to get into an entrenched rebuilding process. He wants to compete for championships. He knows the path to a championship is shorter with Rondo than without him, meaning he's going to go out of his way to make it work with Rondo.
These games without Rondo have shown a lot of things, but the most striking to my eyes is just how much better Rondo is than anyone else on the team. It's like night and day. Sully is an up-and-comer but he's not even in the same league as Rondo (yet). Instead of having threads dedicated to trading Rondo, I'd like a thread dedicated to acquiring a player as good as Rondo because, um, you know, that's what it's going to take to get this team back into contention and if I know Ainge that's what he's been working day and night on, not some .70 cents on the dollar trade of his best player but finding guys as good as Rondo who he can pair with him.
Rondo is not the problem on this team, he's part of the f-ing solution.
The leaks are real...the news is fake.

I'm not saying we need to trade him, unless we feel he is a flight risk, which he very well could be. What I am saying is that if he wants to play for the another team in 2015, there is almost nothing we can do about it beyond offering him a 5th year, which Ainge might not want to get into at the max or near-max level contract the kid is almost certainly going to be able to command as an unrestricted free agent. As to quality of life issues and that understanding human nature nonsense, you might be overrating the draw of living in Lincoln, MA as a young black millionaire. Come on, now.
You're saying he took a below market deal last time, but it was an extension off a rookie scale. He would had to wait a year just to be a restricted free agent, so it's not like he did us a favor or anything. He and his people made a calculation that there was too much risk in letting things wait, which is pretty understandable given that it was his first real payday. As to taking public statements at face value during contract negotiations, I wouldn't.
As for lists, here's a list of things Rajon Rondo is probably vaguely aware of:
1. His impending contract value.
2. His potential leverage.
3. The fact that you need to play with talent to win, preferably with a top coach.
4. The facts that Danny Ainge would trade his dad, and is a shark that is completely full of **** at all times.

Jackson's nearly 24 and a less efficient scorer than even Rondo is. Good player but not some budding superstar.

Never said he was a superstar. He's a third year player aged 23 years old and averaging 17, 5,5 per 36 whilst improving every year. Great work ethic and has gone from playing 11 minutes and 14 minutes a game to 28 minutes a game due to Westbrook's injury.
Improved his 3 point shooting, free throw shooting and trying to expand his perimeter game to become a triple threat.
Anyway, I just pointed out that he was incorrect saying that OKC has nothing we would want for Rondo when they have plenty.

LOL NO.
Trading a star for two players with potential to be "good" starters but nothing else. Ainge would give an answer in a heartbeat, but that answer would be a hell NO.

What do you think you are trading Rondo for? If you deal him you are doing so because the rebuild is outside of his window. If this thing isn't turned around in short order the that is the situation you are in. If Ainge had landed Durant Paul Pierce was gone. If Ainge gets a top 3 pick in this draft and goes with it chances are Rondo is moving on. Right now everyone is focused on Rondo because he is the most talented player on the team once he isn't the concept of paying him the max at 30 for what he does will seem silly when the team is still 2 or 3 years away from title contention.
This is just reality. If Rondo's first choice is to stay in Boston and works with the organization to make that work then sure that is great. If Rondo is going to be about Rondo first (which he probably should do unless he can get a no trade clause) I am not sure it makes sense for a team outside of a championship window to get into a bidding war for his services.
So there is no reason to trade Rondo for a different 29 year old All Star and nobody is going to trade a 24 year old All Star for Rondo. So if you make the decision to move him guys like Jackson, Lamb, and Adams are what you should be focusing on.

Re: Rondo Trade Rumors & Ideas (update pg 8)
I'm not buying captain caveman's angle on Rondo being a flight risk and being concerned with getting value for him in a trade.
First off, Rondo is good but he's not the type of player who cripples a franchise by departing in Free Agency. It's possible, even likely, that Ainge could find a more than adequate replacement with one of the Celtics first rounders this season.
Second, we're talking about the Boston Celtics here. Rondo, as talented as he is, is a small fry in the pantheon of Celtics legends. He wants to demand a trade or max dollars at the expense of building a winner and he's GONE. Ainge knows how to make moves.
And finally, Ainge is a GREAT manager. Look at Sullinger. Look at how he turned Jason Collins into a reasonably valuable asset. Look at his track record of acquiring stars and luring big names in Free Agency. Regardless of what happens with Rondo, the franchise is in very capable hands.
Ideally, Ainge can get this thing turned around in a hurry WITH Rondo. If he's not on board with that, the rebuilding process will take longer, sure. But I'd bet that one way or the other the Celtics will be OK with or without Rondo, and wherever he goes I'd also bet the Celtics will get a championship before he does (if he's on a max max deal).

Thank goodness Danny Ainge is running the Celtics and not posters in this forum.
