Report: Jays have made bid for Suk-min Yoon

Post#1 » by Nolan » Mon Feb 10, 2014 5:06 am

http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/report-blue-jays-targeting-korean-rhp-yoon/

The Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams that have reportedly made a bid for South Korean right-hander Suk-min Yoon, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

The Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Arizona Diamondbacks are among the other teams that have expressed interest in the 27-year-old free agent, Cafardo is reporting.

Yoon has spent nine seasons with the Kia Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization. Last season he posted a 4.00 ERA with 76 strikeouts and 28 walks in 30 appearances. He reportedly dealt with a shoulder problem during that season but not much was released publicly by team officials.

Does anyone have a scouting report on this dude?

While I'd like to have Blue Jay games on TV here, I kinda hope the Jays lose this bid.

He was average at best in the KBO last year, and hasn't really been good in a few years. He did win the league MVP a few years back, but he hasn't been as dominant since his injury.

Looks like he has some nice breaking stuff, but who knows. It's hard to get a good sense of a lot of these international players. It says he was injured last year, so maybe that will account for his down year last year, but who knows. On a 2 year deal, it could be a low-risk, high-reward type scenario.

Plus, he'd probably be a 4th/5th starter at best on the team, not a big deal as long as this doesn't affect us signing a better top-end starter and/or 2nd baseman.

id take a risk on him with low expectations, but high reward in mind

I would sign him, "expecting" him to be in the bullpen most likely, but with a chance he is a hidden gem for the rotation.

he's gotta be cheap though. Otherwise, pass

Ken Rosenthal on the Fan today said he is hearing from most baseball people that this guy is nothing special, unless you put a premium on a 91 mph fastball.

Nothing. He was taking some batting practice in one of those fully netted cages and he hit a ball off the netting that ricocheted back and grazed him on the head.
