Who should we go after to be our SF?

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Fri Feb 14, 2014 9:33 pm

In the offseason, assuming we allow our FAs to walk, who should we target to be our long-term SF via free agency?

Trevor Ariza
He is an absolute sniper and very good defender

If we have significant cap room I'd rather go after Lance Stephenson than any of these options.

I didn't include any RFAs. A lot of good ones will be RFAs in the offseason, but I doubt any of their respective teams let them get away:

SG Stephenson (23)
SG/SF Turner (25)
SF Hayward (24)
SF Parsons (25)

I don't think Philly would try to hard to match on Turner. If Stephenson is given a Lin/Asik type RFA offer I could see the Pacers not wanting to have tax implications.

I would want Ariza. He is the best fit and easiest to acquire in the offseason. I love Parsons but don't want to pay him 8 to 10 mill a season.

why don't we resign Monroe and wait a few years to sign affalo. Keep smith at sf and by then our bench will have siva, Kcp, singler, jorts and mitchell

In a few years, Afflalo will be on the wrong side of 30....thus KCP might be better than him at that point. (Fingers crossed)

Ariza, but we should probably try to get Ariza and a young cheap guy like Hamilton or Johnson if we can, to add a little depth.

None of the above; there isn't a "long-term" option on that list. Which means our long-term SF aint gonna come as an unrestricted free agent signing this offseason, which is fine.

Stephenson is unrestricted this year I believe because he was a 2nd rd pick.

Might wanna go take a look at Afflalo's 41% FG shooting and 20.8% 3 point shooting his rookie year before you say that he showed an ability to shoot his rookie year while KCP hasn't. Middleton also didn't show anywhere near the shooting ability it turned out he had during his rookie season. I don't think anyone would guess he would shoot 40% from 3 his 2nd year in the league.

Also, what does "30 isn't old anymore" mean? Of course 30 is still old, especially for guards where their ability to play is predicated on movement/speed.

As far as the poll goes, I voted Trevor Ariza. He would fit very well. That said, I would love for us to get Jordan Hamilton. I think he'll be a pretty good player in the future.

Ariza would be the best fit. The problem is the only player Washington would probably be interested in is Monroe, and Ariza just isn't worth that much. Plus Ariza is an UFA, so I cant see the Pistons trading Monroe for a 30 game rental of a role player. They would have to get other pieces.

Maybe Ariza/Porter could make sense. You get a proven vet in the interim, then young prospect as insurance should he leave in FA. The problem is Porter looks like the SF version of KCP. I'm not sure having two extremely raw, young perimeter players at SG AND SF to have to develop is a problem this team needs right now. They need to be tradinbg for proven vets that can contribute right away and you know exactly what you are getting in the deal.

Maybe a 3 team deal to get Ariza + another player could work, but seems unlikely. Its too bad because Ariza really would be a perfect fit.

If they could somehow do something to get Ariza and Affalo here for Monroe, that would be amazing. Maybe if they got a 1st round pick + Ariza for Monroe, they could send the pick to Orlando in a deal for Afflalo to make all parties happy. Probably too hard to make happen though, but man that would be a nice lineup...

If we can trade Smith for expirings somehow I'd love to make a run at Hayward. Despite some shooting issues this year he would be the perfect fit at small forward as a guy who can shoot and handle the ball

johnson intrigues me,I would like to see what he does for the rest of the season. Not a bad defender,He hasant been stunning offensively since he was drafted but has looked better this year,7"1 wingspan, good rebounder, still a young guy that can grow with the team.I relize hes on a bad team with LA,but this is the first time he has gotten consistent minutes starting and this might just be a case of him finally breaking out.Johnson and blake have been bright spots for that lakers team.
