Official Monroe vs Smith

Post#1 » by Notanoob » Fri Feb 14, 2014 7:35 pm

So outside of tanking/playoff push, the next head coach, Smith vs Monroe is the big topic on this board. Let's centralize the debate.

Move em both. Trade Smith for expiring(s), trade Monroe for assets -- build around Drummond.

Worst-case scenario, at least trade Smith.

Trade Monroe. Offensive big men like him are severely overrated in this league. Monroe is likely to get a big contract that he doesn't deserve. When I look at Smith, sure he's a chucker, but he plays hard and he plays defense. Have you see Monroe defend the pick and roll? I haven't seen feet that slow since Daye was on the team. Why do his feet move really well on offense? Easy answer, effort. Kick Monroe out of this team and get as much as you can for him. Teams all over the league drool for players like him. He spells potential but he's not the type you win a championship with. Smith, on the other hand, carried the Hawks in the past and he's 27. If we trade Monroe for a player that's 22-27 years old, we would still have our core and an even more stable defensive core. Say Turner and Thad? I'll take that!

Both aren't ideal fits if we really are supposed to build around Dre, since I think surrounding Dre with actual shooters/dynamic wings from 1-4 positions is the way to go.

I'd keep Monroe and try the twin towers if it came down to it though.

I really don't believe surround Dre with shooters is the way to go. We can't depend on that. That's what the Magic did and it didn't work out for them. I saw we keep Smith at PF since he's able to shoot and he's a big that can guard PFs. Monroe on the other hand can't make a shot to save his career right now. Trade him. You'd get so much more for him.

I say move Monroe.

Why move Monroe?
He will bring back more on the trade market.
Detroit is playing him at PF where he isn't good defensively.
He is clogging the lane where Drummond operates.
Will have to be maxed to retain next season.

Why keep Smith?
His contract is untradeable.
Move him to PF and his production will improve.
A front line of Drummond and Smith will be one of the best defensively in the league.
With Monroe gone, I wouldn't see those awful threes Smith takes as much anymore.

Just an observation — DBC10 is the only person to POST in this thread that we should keep Monroe, yet that option is the clear early frontrunner in the poll (almost double the votes of any other choice). Everyone else who has posted in here either wants to keep Smith / dump Monroe or else dump them both. I think that says something about the most vocalized opinions on these boards not necessarily being the most widely held.

And yes, I voted for the "Keep Monroe, Dump Smith" option. Simply because Monroe is talented, 23, and big; such players are typically not assets smart teams let go of lightly.

There's a reason why the words "silent majority" is an actual thing. Everybody is pretty much over with this argument anyways since whenever Smith plays (not without consistency) it just adds fuel to the fire without saying a thing.

i agree with just about all of this, especially keeping smith to allow him to raise his value by finally playing PF full time, though i'm sure he'll sneak a few cringe-worthy 3's, BUT i just don't see a reasonable deal for monroe out there right now. we'd be better off moving him in the offseason in a sign & trade.

Yeah this argument is pretty much over, the majority becomes silent because the evidence is so overwhelming anybody that can't see it by now probably isn't capable of getting it

Chuck just called them idiots on national tv... The two worst outside (smith) and inside (Jennings) shooters in the league who both lead their team in fga during the habitual 4th quarter collapses

Monroe gets pgs funneled to him by Jennings all game long, he effectively guards 2 players all night long- the pg and the power forward. Idiots blame Monroe then say absolutely NOTHING about Jennings
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

You just gotta hope that Gores grows tired of hearing his team the butt of jokes and seeing his young superstar iced out on the offense in favor of low IQ chuckers.

I like Jennings a lot more than Smith and thinks he's the best PG we have had since Billups. That being said, there is no excuse for him taking 16FGA a game. None.

Ironically, I see us trading Stuckey for another PF.....just seems like our most realistic Dumars move.
