Former L.A. Lakers Players Hazed Kobe Bryant as Rookie

Former Los Angeles Lakers players hazed Kobe Bryant as rookie
By Bryan Rose - Feb 14th, 2014 at 1:17 pm

Despite being one of the greatest to ever grace an NBA court, back in 1998, Kobe Bryant was nothing more than a talented rookie fresh off his senior year in high school.

And make no mistake, former Los Angeles Lakers players took advantage of that.

According to TMZ and Cedric Ceballos, former players like Eddie Jones (and Ceballos himself) used to haze Bryant by making him chase balls down, get bags off the plane in the freezing cold or make food runs – at 2 A.M. But it wasn’t just current players harassing Kobe (who apparently took it all in stride) as Laker legends like James Worthy, Kareem and Wilt Chamberlain all gave Bryant grief.

“We’d make him chase balls into the stands of the huge arenas, or take bags off the plane in the freezing cold. Or we’d say, ‘I need coffee from Starbucks and donuts from Krispy Kreme’ — and it’d be 2am in a town we just arrived in.”

Yep – even Kobe Bryant had to go through the rookie torture. Sounds like he avoided the dreaded pink backpack treatment though, something Sacramento Kings rookie Ben McLemore couldn’t.

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't care if Ceballos, Jones, or even Kareem or Wilt asked me to do sh*t like that I'd tell them to go screw themselves... tradition or not I'm nobodies b*tch. Same with this Incognito guy from the Miami Dolphins, I'd tell him to go screw himself as well.

Its not like this is uncommon. Why should kobe be exempt? Kobe did exactly what he was suppose to.

Exactly right Big Game, as for what WCD said.....let me tell you this you can call it hazing all you want, but all this does is test a young guy's mental fortitude. It's not about being "somebody's bit*h", it's about earning your respect.

Looking at today's NBA, you can tell that none of that is being done anymore. These players today are bitch made candy asses.

And this all happened during Kobe's rookie season in 1998??? Mmmmmmkayyyyy!

And fwiw Club Ced played 8 whole games with the Lakers during the 1996/97 season. I doubt he did much hazing.

Can't see Kobe doing it. I didn't put up with any crap from my team-mates on my high school team and I'm a relatively passive guy, someone like Kobe definitely wouldn't.

I knew somebody was bound to post some stupid bs like you just did... growing up as a kid I was raised to never back down when being disrespected, to be nobodies punk... so I never let anybody do so. What I said was based on real life experiences both in and out of sports, not because I'm trying to be a badass on a damn basketball forum... SMH

Yeah good for you, but you're not being disrespected, you're being initiated into something your teammates and brothers went through when they first came into the league. It's called learning your place and earning respect.

When millions of dollars is thrown at you and you're first coming into the league trying to find your role on a team. I doubt you stand up to your fellow comrades and throw it all away in order to not be "disrespected" rofl.

the article said they'd send him to those places in a town they just arrived in, so could've been anywhere other than LA.

this isn't about being disrespected at all. if you have that POV because of personal experiences, then your experiences were probably far from the norm and have jaded your perspective.

Yeah Starbucks was here in the mid 90's just not in many areas as they are now. Krispy Kreme didn't roll out until the late 90's I think.
