It seems like just yesterday Jason Kidd hit the "leg-kicking" game winner vs. the Brooklyn Nets. Raymond Felton's excellent first-round series vs. Boston seems like a distant memory however. The Knicks, our Knicks, simply have not found any rhythm or winning spirit all season long.
Today marked the day we would shake up our roster...why? Not because we've underachieved more than any other team this season, but because it was the trading deadline. Why didn't we attempt to move Shump/Felton during the Texas road trip, when both played well, sparingly. Instead we waiting for the two days before the deadline to look for moves.
3PM hits today and we land nobody. Our backcourt is seemingly non-existent. But thats okay. When Iman Shumpert joined the NBA from Georgia Tech, he was seldom known. However, he made his name in his very first professional action, as a ball hounding stopper. When I first saw Iman play, I automatically compared him to another young two-way player, Paul George. I thought the two would grow to be very similar players. Nobody expected Paul George to improve his offensive game so much over the past two off-seasons.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Knicks Iman Shumpert has seemingly lost all his offensive confidence. So lets sell low on one of our two only assets! No. Stand Pat. Sucks we couldn't move Felton, but he's another player that can easily start to play better and bring his value up by the time the off-season rolls around. This off-season we will have legit NBA type assets. Three massive one year deals, two young wing players (Shump, THJr.), J.R. Smith, and Raymond Felton.
Come this time next season, we will have our chance to set ourselves up for the biggest summer of free agency in Knicks history. BTW, this is all assuming Melo resigns this off-season, because I am positive he will. Anyway, we will have ways to create deals that land us either talent, picks, or cap relief. By putting one of our expiring deals with Ray or J.R., hopefully we can rebuild from there the right way. Either way, next time NBA teams can officially trade again, our Knicks will have 3 contracts worth over 40 million dollars in expiring deals.
Just some trade ideas for this time next season:
A) Huntin Wolves :
Knicks trade Amare,Felton, J.R. Smith
Knicks receive: Love (who resigns), Rubio
B) Ragin Rajon
Knicks trade Bargnani, Felton
Knicks receive Rondo
Either of those two stars can force their way to the Knicks, along with any other stars in the league...and because of those huge expiring deals we have, the assets are there to acquire star talent....
of course any deal must be signed off by Carmelo Kyam Anthony.
