Re: Simple trade with Cleveland
Did they close the loophole of being able to trade players in a package by making two ~separate~ trades?
For instance, could we do Deng for Smith...and then also do Jarrett Jack for Jerebko (or something?)

^ This is close to exactly what I was thinking thanks to the "Deng must be traded alone" restriction, but I think we need to send CLE a little more incentive in the second trade — two separate deals, Deng for Smith (per the OP) and then Stuckey for Jack. I think both teams benefit, with each using a useful expiring who will fit well on their new squad to dump unwanted long-term salary. Seeing as they're kinda over a barrel, still competing for the playoffs and may want to get something of value for Deng, I think it's possible CLE would go for it.
P.S. — In case it hasn't found its way into this thread yet, the Pistons were one of the teams linked to Deng per WireTap. So there's hope!

Deng cant be traded with any other player
Meaning whoever trades for him must match his deal dollar for dollar
Smith, Granger i can see
But who in the heck can Cavs trade for on Memphis or Clippers?
Why would writers post trade rumors of Deng going to the Clippers when none of their contracts even hover around 14M except for Blake Griffin?
Meanwhile Memphis only has Gasol to offer up.
This right here is the best news we could get. Why? Because the only person on our roster that can be traded for Deng is...JOSH Smith.

It's sounding like Cleveland quickly shot down out offer for Deng meaning that Smoove Bricks was the offer. Face it, he's ours for a long time unless another Ben Gordon type deal goes down where we're desperate.

the ben gordon deal is honestly one of the worst in pistons history imo. we're likely to lose out on our lottery pick in a ridiculously stacked draft just so we could get out of ONE year of ben gordon's contract. we could have amnestied him for christ's sake, but NO, gores thought it'd be a bad business move to pay that dead salary....he'd rather pay josh smith and brandon jennings. oh, the irony.
now we're out a 1st rounder and probably stuck with smith. i don't buy that gordon had to be dealt with a 1st rounder for someone to take him. BARGNANI got the raptors a 1st rounder. dumars just didn't do his job, plain and simple.

How in the world is an expiring contract worth a first when the longer contract player is a good player at the right position, and KCP is a young defensive rookie with offensive potential.
Yeah, that's nuts. It's clear Deng has no intention to stay in Cleveland, so it's a question of the Cavs getting something now, or nothing later. They don't have much in the way of leverage here.
Besides, as someone pointed out early in the thread, Deng can only be traded straight up for another player, since he's already been traded this year. That's why this scenario and the Nets/Cavs/Pistons proposal where in we get Deng, Cleveland gets Lopez and the Nets get Smith makes a lot of sense.
Guys, we're the ones who have the player making $54m and has been well below league average this year! We have the liability, not the leverage. Deng is expiring and he's been his usual great defense, solid shooting, great teammate self. Getting a half season out of him sounds a lot better than getting three and a half seasons (at $14m per season) of one of the league's current laughingstocks.
Also, I have to repeat what others have said: the Smith at SF experiment has failed in Detroit, just like it did when ATL tried it a few years ago, and the Cavs have two young PFs drafted in the top 4 that haven't shown any ability to play another position. If this trade went down, the internet would break with all of the insults and jokes flung at Cleveland's FO by neutral NBA observers.

Since Wiretap said the Cavs and Pistons have explored Deng trade talks, any rumors as to what the Pistons offered?

In order to take Smith that's what it would take when they have much better offers I'm sure.
