What is Gores thinking after losses to Charlotte?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Thu Feb 20, 2014 6:43 am

What can Gores be thinking? His mandate this year was pretty clear to make the playoffs. Dumars played his cards and gave it a try. The plan did not work. Firing the coach didn't matter. Now with less than 24 hours to the trade deadline, does he rethink whatever plan he and Joe had? Options:

1) Roll with what we have and likely end up out of the playoffs AND giving up our pick
2) Make short sighted trade to try and push us into the playoffs
3) Trade away a few players (Smith, Jennings) for lesser players/expiring deals and tank.

I know we've discussed these ad nauseum, but the next 24 hours decides the rest of the season, and certainly impacts the next couple. I'm hoping for option 3.

I honestly don't think anything will happen.
Joe and Gores probably overvalue Smith at this point and they can't just let monroe walk, so they'll match an offer at seasons end.
Firing Cheeks the way they did means they believe the roster is better than it is.

I think Gores thinks "if we can just go on a run I'll get playoff revenue".

I think you summed it up pretty well. I don't expect any kind of move.

Probably feels as bad as you feel when your $50 fantasy league team under performs for the season.

If he cared a lick he would have fired Dumars by now. Just another in a long list of anonymous billionaires who used owning a sports franchise to publicize their wealth/success. He'll sell the team within 5 years.

It's funny that people think we have options in terms of making the playoffs or not. We have way more than enough talent to get hot and make a playoff run with or without smith. We also have guys playing so selfishly that even bringing in a "star" wouldn't necessarily spark us.

At this point in the season, the only thing to do is to try to make good decisions about who we want here long term. Then devote the rest of the season to seeing if those guys can play together.

He SHOULD be thinking "time to start over" and "let's make moves to improve us down the road."

But he's probably thinking about his bottom-line - $$$

A smart owner would bottom out since this team is likely headed to no man's land with its upcoming schedule.

Even the Bucks or Hawks who were treadmill playoff teams weren't this bad.

Gores doesn't know enough about basketball to even realize that the last two games were important.

It's one of many businesses he owns.

He's not here often, so he may be very detached emotionally.

He may look at it more from the profit/loss perspective, not with a burning desire to win (forget what he says before and at the end of every season - that may be lip service).

In essence, he may not care anywhere near as much as any of us (about winning the whole thing).

And that, everyone, could be the big problem.

It's the danger that goes with having an owner that lives and spends most of his time on the other side of the country. He doesn't read the papers, or feel the disgust.

He's not here...and I think it's a bigger issue than many believe.

Yeah, he's out living in the always 70 degree California taking care of business down there, he has no real attachment here. I think that's really sad.

He's more than welcome to completely prove me wrong though. I welcome it.

If Gores really wanted to make the playoffs badly this season he would have hired Hollins by now and put a GM in place to make some deals happen like Cleveland does. Gores is all talk - firing (Please Use More Appropriate Word) Mo Cheeks just doesn't do it.

We're talking about the same Tom Gores who rushed the court after a win over the Timberwolves in preseason. :)

Yep, his action after that game speaks volumes about where he is in terms of knowing what is and is not important (like mandating the playoffs this season).

Depressing. Worst option is to do nothing, miss the playoffs AND give up the pick. Again, wtf is Gores thinking? Do something to move the needle, either up or down!

"Maybe ill take a trip to Vegas & stay at the Palms"

This guy Gores is the equivalent of a casual fan owning a team.
